Muscle cars appeal for quite a few reasons. A lot of it is for the fact its cheap performance and raw power. They are incredibly easy to work out, they sound amazing and the colors stick out. Not to mention the styling. Parts are cheap an they are fast. Most have a nice smooth ride and handle pretty good for most driving. There's not much else out there like them.

You would never have an Audi or a Mercedes painted orange with racing stripes. But you would on a muscle car.
I sort of get it, it's about rebellion, and I see why people would like them. I'd just rather buy this if I wanted cheap fun:

It's not even about rebellion, more so of people want to go fast with good looks for cheap. Hence why Fox Body Mustangs are wildly popular. Light weight, decent power stock, lots of aftermarket galore...hard to beat really. Buy the car for a few thousand (you can even get rollers for a few hundred), put $2,500 into the motor and you've got a car 90% of cars on the street won't beat. $4,500 car and not much else is going to keep up (for the most part). The other thing about muscle cars that is cool is that you never know what you are going to be up against. There's so much aftermarket that you can be racing what appears to be an entirely stock car and never once think it's got a 700 horsepower big block in it. And as I've previously said, older cars have the stylish looks that new cars seem to lack.

I know what you mean, though. Inexpensive for something that will beat most things at the drag strip. And while I'm not a fan, a lot of people like the way they look. They like the fact that it could beat your car, not that you'll ever try and drag race.

It's just something that you're born to. Either you like them or you're not a huge fan. I'm the latter, but I do understand them.

Drag racing is the first thought that comes to mind but actually those old muscle cars didn't actually handle too badly. Now that greatly depends on the car; a 1969 Camaro is obviously going to turn better than a Dodge Dart. I know plenty of people who track race and autocross stock steering and suspended cars with nothing more than a disc brake upgrade and a couple of "bolt on" parts to the engine. They don't do half bad either. They are at home going straight, but then again, almost all of driving is going straight and what turns you find out on the street aren't going to be putting those old cars anywhere near their limits.

Everyone has opinions, and I respect that they aren't your first choice. I'm just explaining the appeal.
 
A lotus elise? Cheap?
I'm sorry, but I've seen an Elise for for 45k used, how in the world is this cheap?!
I bet for 1/4 of that money I could make a smog era Torino kick it's ass in every category.
 
A powerful modern muscle car should cost 50k. Elises are a bit pricey, I accept.
Again that's why old ones are still popular.

For $15-20,000, I can almost guarantee you this this pile of crap will smoke an Elise:

Hell, if I wanted to get mouthy I could argue for that money it would out-drag a ton of famous supercars.

Judging an Elise on its acceleration credentials is about as effective as judging a smog-era muscle car on its road-holding abilities.

Unless the Elise-smoking and out-dragging are two separate thoughts. They seemed related to me.
It would help if you would have read my previous post where I said for the money I could likely make it outperform an Elise in every category; for a fraction of what it would cost to buy an Elise. It's possible to make it as good as a supercar, but I'd rather not think about the cost.
