Scientists compared the brain activity of rats taking ecstacy in a quiet enviroment, rats taking ecstacy in a loud environment, and rats takinging a saline solution in a loud environment. The results:
Turning the volume up appears to turn brain function down. Among rats given the high dose of ecstasy, those exposed to 95 decibels--the maximum noise legally allowed in Italian nightclubs--had ECoG readings half as high as rats not exposed to sound. Brain activity for rats left to trip quietly returned to normal after 1 day, but raving rats' brain activity stayed low for 5 days. Rats given low doses of ecstasy also had low ECoG readings after sound exposure, but their readings returned to normal after just 1 day. Those given saline instead of ecstasy experienced no drop in ECoG reading, the team reports online today in BMC Neuroscience.

The results indicate that relatively common environmental factors can have big impacts on the harmful effects of high-dose drug use, says John Mendelson, a physician and clinical scientist at California Pacific Medical Center's Addiction Pharmacology Research Laboratory in San Francisco.

I think that's a little weird, so basically taking a drug while listening to music is more detrimental than just taking the drug. I know that music (and environment in general) can definitely intensify an experience, but just because the scientists see less brain activity, does that necessarily mean it's detrimental? And also, the effect of E on the brain lasts for 5 days?! Thats quite surprising to me...

Know many partykidz? It's not surprising to me at all.

I do, plenty of them are idiots, but there are plenty of idiots regardless. I know at least a few regular users who seem to have a better head on thier shoulders than lots of "average" people I know. I understand there are lots of bad physical effects, but I don't think that these scientists have interprested their results correctly...

I've done E once, and I didn't feel the effects even a few (6 or so) hours after, and definitely not the next day. This was supposedly "good stuff" and the people I did it with seemed to enjoy it.

Just read this on a certain news website. The headline was:

"Loud music amplifies some effects of Ecstasy, according to scientists who threw world's tiniest rave for their lab rats"

I wonder what type of music they played. I think my brain would get fried without the assistance of a drug if I had to listen to loud, annyoing, and crappy music for a few hours.

Well they said that the rats that just had saline solution but were at the "rave" didn't show a decrease in brain activity...

Well, it depends a lot on the person who takes it, and even what is called "good stuff" can vary greatly, unless your friends analyzed it in a lab.

I took E about 8 years back, and many times I could feel some effects days after taking it. Nothing strong, you just happen to feel unusually good, have enhanced tactile sensations or enjoy music more than ususal. People, (including myself) used to think that this was a much better aftermath than a bad hangover after heavy drinking. That's until you screw enough with your serotonin levels and start experiencing niceties such as depression and paranoia, mind you.

About the brains activity effects with music, it's weird, really, and doesn't feel that way at all, often you actually feel more focused on it. Perhaps it's because it puts you in a more relaxed state. And the effects on actual ravers might be a bit different anyways, since pills often contains other stimulant drugs, such as speed.
