What do you guys think of a realistic damage model in a game like GT4?

On one hand, I believe it'll make the game MUCH harder, since something as small as hitting a wall coming out of a turn could take out a car's proverbial legs, as I've just seen in ALMS.

On the other, it'll force gamers to become pseudo-race car drivers, avoiding contact at all costs and mastering perfect lines to avoid wrecking their cars.

Perhaps a balance, such as an option of damage realism settings would be best suited for a game like GT4.

On a consumer level, a game that is too hard wouldn't be as marketable.

On a corporate level, it'd be hard to get companies willing to include cars in a game where they can be damaged.

However, as an avid racing fan, I think it'd be a great idea to include in GT4. It'd bring a whole new perspective to the game, and an incentive to driving properly.

I can't remeber who had this in their sig, or whatnot, but the lead developer of the GT series researched this topic and found that in most cases, the only thing left of your car would be little metal fragments.

You hit on the spot when you noted that companies don't want to see their car damaged just so PD can take scans of them.

It would make the game too hard in some cases. Many people who make GT4 their first racing game purchase will lose interest quickly if they keep demolishing themselves. It would also be pointless on Liscences, as you cannot hit the wall anyways.

"The majority of crashes in Gran Turismo - maybe 80% - would leave your car in pieces maybe 2 inches big"... :D Nuff said.

Aslong as the cars aren't made of super absorbant rubber I'll be happy :)

I'd prefer more cars to damage, also if you had damage other details would have to be lowered. Plus plenty of other games have damage.

If they tried to add a damage model, They would probably have to re-vamp the game engine, and further delay the game. :(. Plus, other things such as the amount of cars, tracks, tuning parts, etc. would be significantly reduced in number.

Alot of car games have some damage but are unrelastic in most cases. The GT editor has said he wants to add damage in the GT series but not in GT 4.

I assume on ps3 it would be possible as it should be able to or hopefully will be able to caclulate some mechanics, and physics to get a quite realisitc damage.

Heck if you want a simulation game why add then the god mode to the cars?

the_cobbinator is right. PD wanted to put car damage in, but the auto makers did not want to see their cars damaged.

if they added car damage - it wouldn't be the GT series anymore, afterall we have grown acustomed to that we can drive these cars a bit like the bumber cars in carnivals  with Car Damage it wouldn't be the same, let's keep on driving like maniacs

Well, I don't drive like a maniac in the GT games. Anyway, I think you are right. If they add damage to the GT games, the game would be different. We are used to hitting walls and nothing happening to the car. We would have to get used to that if there was damage. I'm not too sure about having damage in the GT games, although it would be fun to ram the AI cars into a wall and their cars would be totalled!

Well, speak for yourself, although I imagine there'd be some pretty severe complaints about AI nudging if there was realistic damage.

If they cant do damage, they should at least make it so if you do crash, it slows you down A LOT. Because in GT3 etc, you can just hit a corner at high speed and not slow you down much (Super Speedway). So just make it so u get slowed down loads rather than damaged (for now). Anyone agree this would be good enough?

I play Toca Race Driver quite a bit and it's fun to have damage because it teaches you to respect your car and if you damage it during a race you have to pit in and get it repaired. I think in GT4 they should put other damage in like under the bonnet. So if you do hit a wall really hard, even if it isn't external it should bugger your engine so you have to replace it. So I think they should also have things like components failures where you have to replace the components. Like a suspension failure and you have to go into the pits and get it repaired. Though it shouldn't happen to often otherwise it would just get annoying. And tyre blow outs would be good. Especially if you like go on dirty parts of the race track and pick up dirt and get tyre blow outs. I reme, ber the original Le Mans 24 hours game for the PSone. It had some good little features on there and one good one was every time you went on te dirt, gravel trap etc. you pick up dirt and your tyres have very little grip for like 3 corners then the dirt comes off and you get your original grip back. And it had it so if you were to over rev your engine to much it would over heat and blow up, but if you were to come into the pits when it nearly ready to blow up, your pit crew would cool it down and you could go out to race again. Just little thing like that are cool.

if there is AI caused damage then the game in after hand could check whos fault it really is, and why not let the limit be the laws of physics?

But what i'm saying is, is how mashed up could your car get? I'm sure most people will try to destroy one at least once if damage was included

i liked the rumored idea of having the car fall off the cliff or whatever. that would be pretty interesting on the Grand Canyon course :D

if there would be damage you could say bye bye to the nice graphics...

"Alot of car games have some damage but are unrelastic in most cases. The GT editor has said he wants to add damage in the GT series but not in GT 4."

he also said they have no projects after GT4... and i dont think we can expect damage in GT series for a long time... i think it would wreck the realistic feeling (i know that sounds weird).

WE all know there wont be damage in GT4, I hope they will contínue with another GT game. As for what damage goes I hope it will be there in for the ps3 version
