Realistic Truck Suspension

Alright I fired up GT4 today after a long rest from it. I bought an F-150 lighting and went right to the tune shop and was surprised when I got to the suspension tuning.

First off you don't put coil overs on a truck, that doesn't work. Secondly there are leaf springs in the back and you adjust the suspension by either adding blocks or swaping the springs.

This really irked me because it's not realistic in any way. I think with GT5 they should include an option to add a rear link set up for trucks, I can just imagine my F-150 with a triangleulated 5 link set up in the back of the truck, with drop spindels and coils on in the front with firmer shocks. It would make more sense to me.

I know this is my first GT5 forum post, but this really irked me since GT4 is supposed to be realistic and everything.
 
It would also be really nice to actually be able to lower them (for real), other than just the concept Silverado SS.... you know, so they LOOK low... not just supposedly are low
 
I do agree with makeing anything more realistic, truck suspension is prolly pretty real low on the list for PD to fix.
 
But for a truck guy like myself I find it very annoying.
 
Considering the small number of trucks in GT4 it probably didn't warrant the extra development time to make a different suspension setup. I think it's kinda pointless having trucks if there's only going to be a really limited selection to choose from. Also, there's no real international interest in trucks anyway, those big American ones aren't any good anywhere else in the world, they'd be worse than useless on a farm here. Go the Hilux I say!
 
Well, there are plenty of other american rides with leafsprings in the game, so I can´t see why they opted this out.

I can't believe in this day and age cars would still be using leaf springs. In trucks they serve a purpose but not really in cars.

Yet the brand new Mustang GT and the Vette C6 has it... The Mustang even has a stiff rear axle :crazy:
 
For racing, i don't think leafsprings are of much use. They do not give control, and I've seen pick ups without them, they were modded. I'll check my dad's truck, he has an Expedition, and it's air assisted suspension so I doubt i'll see leafs on it.

The truck mods you are thinking of are like the one for heavy trucks, which include off roading, PD didn't even add that, understandable why you are upset. But GT has those trucks in for experimentation purposes, maybe it will be fixed in GT5.

Pitty really, I like the look of the Mustang but it's sad that American car companies cut so many corners to save money.

Actually they didn´t cut corners with the Mustang. They wanted it really retro in it´s feel, but still to handle like a modern car. I have no idea if they really pulled that off, but reviews on it states it handles surprisingly well, considering it´s technology, so Ford must have done something right... :)
 
Yeah, and the Corvette C6 is a world class sports car in every way, even if the interior is a bit cheesy. Leaf springs don't automatically mean bad handling.
 
for one thing the new mustang dosent use leaf springs on the rear axle. yes is has a dead dog solid axle but its still coil sprung and located by no less than five links if i'm not mistaken. sure unsprung weight is a little high and you have all the other disadvantages of a non independant suspension setup but on a good surface the mustangs rear suspension actualy does quite well. the rear suspension is quite solid.

As for the corvett, although it uses leaf springs its not like the traditional leaf setup where the rear axle is located by the springs themselves. the corvett is four wheel independant A arms all around with coilovers up front. and the rear leafs are actualy sideways in the car otherwise known as "transverse leaf springs" they dont hold anything in place it just works similar to a torsion bar setup.

Anyways, I think PD should include the ability to put a rear link set up on leaf spring cars/ trucks in the suspension mod section.
 
I would truly be amazed to find that C6 Vette's have leaf springs.... 93-02 Firebird's and Camaro's & 94-present Mustang's certainly don't...
 
C6 Vette's do have leaf springs, but they are carbon composit and work really good.

When you lower the ride height in the settings it does actually lower the car, you can see the difference.

which is why they cant take corners.

i always presumed that by purchasing a suspension tuning option the standard suspension regardless of what it is is replaced by a decent spring and shocker system.

Even Jeremy Clarkson will happily admit the C6 vette can corner, he said the Mustang's not bad either. Not as good as the Vette but not as sporty a car really either.

hm, i must have been watching a different top gear show where it was hammond who did those test drives and slammed the handling. with the mustang failing to go around a roundabout and putting down a pebble on the road to show how harsh the corvettes suspension was.


obviously i cant stop all american fanboyism but i can try.
 
Harsh and good handeling are two different things. I still think you are an idiot for saying what you did, get a clue, American cars don't suck.

But anyways, back on topic. Along with the link set ups for trucks they should be offered for muscle cars as well.

I saw that with the tiny pebble aswell, but it had nothing to do with how the Vette handled, only how hard the suspension was. Hammond claimed a severe buttache after a day in the Vette, but as I recall, he had no complaints about the handling.
 
wow, and people say they love race cars? if you can't handle a corvette, what can you handle? I know an 02 Zo6 wasnt extremly harsh, but maybe thats cause I love a tight-flat ride
