Recreating Top Gear's "Stig"

If you're a fan, you know who "The Stig" is. If you don't, in short, he's a mystery driver on the car show "Top Gear" in the UK, who takes various cars around the shows test track, and they keep a leaderboard of times.

Tinkering with GT4, it occured to me. You can do B-Spec in Time Trial mode. Why not create a similar leaderboard. Keep the same settings for the driver, leave the car setup the same, and pick a track to be your test track, and run a leaderboard. If enough people were interested and posted their leaderboards, it'd be interesting to see how the times differed.

you know? that sounds kinda cool. but a question

where the hell are you? are you in the US or the UK? i downloaded the entire series for three years. i love that show. (i also read a lot of Clarksons articles.)

i think this idea will need further testing. good thing i
a)dont have a job right now
b)have access to 3 copies of the game, (four including the Japanese release i got)
c)i am completely obsessed with the game

I like the idea. May be simplest intially to take a car straight from the showroom. What about the Mitsubishi EVO VIII MR GSR plus an oil change if we do it in GT Mode. Reasonably powerful with decent handling. Time Trial in the Arcade may be a viable alternative. We need to decide on the setting for B-spec. I think 3 would be best. How about trying the Nurburgring then, TIme Trial in Arcade, B-spec setting of 3 (so at least "he" is trying to an extent) and the EVO VIII MR GSR?

The Japanese version intiially. I ought to have the American one by early next week with the PAL whenever. Yes, I also am fairly obsesses with the GT series on the PS2 (PAL,US and Japanese GT3, various GT Concept and the PAL and Japanese Prologue with the PAL,US and Japanese GT4 and Korean if I can get it to complete the collection!).

I'm in Canada, but I'm a Brit who moved here eight years ago. Big fan of Clarkson, so have "acquired" every episode of Top Gear that I can find on Bit Torrent.

I, too, am out of work. (Medical grounds.) GT Mode may be more viable, if only because of the number of cars available there. I was thinking pick one track (since many people could do this, you can choose whichever track you want) and do it there. I didn't mean for just like one overall chart, but people to do their own charts and see how they stack up. (Just to clarify that.) So like someone could choose Seattle, someone could choose Nurburgring. Obviously the times would be way different, but an overall pattern should emerge.

I would suggest bumping the driver up to 4, possibly 5 actually. The whole point is getting him to push the car hard:) Obviously if he dumps it off the track, you go again. The Stig has spun on occasion:)

Glad folk seem to like the idea. It came to me during my quest to get the game on the 22nd.
The only rule I would lay down (since it's my idea and I'm power crazy, mwahaha!:)) is that it HAS to be a stock car. Not modded. That way it's a level playing field.

Only problem I can foresee is, from what I gather, the B-Spec mode learns to be a better driver. However, I don't see that as a major problem. Logic decrees that whoever The Stig really is gets better all the time. Right?:)

Sounds like a really good idea. I'd be interested how a 4wd turbo nutter would really hold up agains a MR V12 monster round some different tracks and how similar the splits are compared to top gear's times :)

Having used a setting of 5 a lot in B-spec I can say that the driver did not improve. He always went wide at the last corner at Tsukuba. At the 'Ring "he" spun out and took about 5 minutes to get started again.

On 4 he at least stayed mostly on the road. If I get the time I'll maybe pick a reasonable car and use Time Trial (to save mileage) (I unlocked all 708 cars on my Japanese 100% game out of the 710 in GT Mode). You say to use GT Mode? Well, if you have the car in GT Mode it will be in the arcade unless of course you want to run it modified. You can, of course, increase power by 20% in settings on the arcade and reduce weight by 10%.

I'll maybe do a couple of (speeded up) runs on the Ring and see how consistent the driver is.

Never heard of this show but I like your idea of a leaderboard.Get a hold of the powers to be here and they might help set it up.

I think I remember them saying that every car on there board had to be road legal so racing cars wouldn't count on it... as they got the Renault F1 car to put in a lap and it decimated the competition.

Great Idea though... just make sure the circuit you pic is of a good lenght and has a wide variety of corners to test the cars out.

I acctually started this idea out on my copy of GT3... every car I bought I would leave stock untill I had the time to drive it 3 laps around the Complex Ring... It has every type of corner on it and since I knew the track pretty well after trying desperatly to beat the time in Time Attack mode it seemed to me that the time you got out of it was a good indication of how the car would perform.

I even entered my name as "The Stig" too lol...

I feel sorry for you.

You are missing one of the most entertaining and original car shows out there. Name another show that will pit people mover vans against each other on the race track?

And you gotta love The Stig's taste in music. Nothing funnier than The Stig hammering down a track to Billy Ray Cryus :dopey:

I was doing that with GT,GT2,GT3,GTC,GTP and now with GT4. I've done 50 cars so far, and still counting. (all on the ring)

You can count me in, as soon as i have my PAL version

The Nurburgring would be a great test of a car... however for me the laps too long... mind you I used the complex string in GT3 however it wasn't so hard to learn and I acctually like throwing various cars around there.

Top Gear is a great show and I really recomend people getting some eppisodes to watch it... I especially loved the one where Jeremy Clarkson raced the Hamster (Richard Hammond) and James May to Monte Carlo... Clarkson drove a Aston Martin and the other two had to rely solely on Public Transport. Great to watch.

And the one with the Lotus and the Apache helicopter, or the one with the mini van race, that was cool

I'm really happy i can recieve the bbc here in belgium

Now I don't have the PAL game yet so I dunno but... if the game has a Suzuki Liana in it... you could always pick a track and do the "Star in the Reasonably Priced Car" bit as well... stock car, no mods.. you one track , one lap and the times of the fastest forum members goes on the leaderboard.

Would be god fun to do... of course you need the Reasonably priced car to do it in first.

Definatly like the Stig idea though.

Top Gear has had some great ideas... the sent a Lada Riva to the Lotus Racing Engineering guys and they modified it into something out of this world... well for a Lada that is. The Episode where they tried to get a car to go SO fast that it wouldn't be caught by a speed camera, There was one where they drove cars through the Jet Wash of a Jumbo Jet and watched them get blown away to nothing... and then of course the Stars in the Reasonably Priced Car... David Soul broke 2 Gearboxes as he can't drive stick... Lional Richie, the wheel came off the car he got... Micheal Gambon nearly rolled it out of the last corner which has since always been named Gambon because of him. It's just hilariously good TV.

Always wanted to do a Top Gear style show using GT on the PS2... could be fun... specially now you get the Photomode and stuff to help you do it hehe.

I like the idea. What kinda track are we looking at for this?

I liked the episode where that short guy was going to race with some familie busses or something in a very thight circuit (cars like the Renault Espace), they just kept on RAMMING EACHOTHER, it was so awsome man:D:tup:👍

i am running my own little b-spec arcade database for the nürburgring.
all the cars are run with stock settings on medium sports tires, b-spec-level 3
take a look....

Photo proof would be a good idea, but sadly not everyone has access to a digital camera. Besides, why would folk lie? I mean yeah, I know some people are crapweasels, but this isn't really a competition. It's a test of the AI.

Nurburgring would be too long. I've still barely touched most of the tracks. I think a rule should be it HAS to NOT be a street course. There has to be room to throw up some dirt:) Suzuka may be a good course for it. Very challenging course with a bit of everything.

Will try some more later when the missus is done playing DDR:)

And really, if you've never seen Top Gear, and have Bit Torrent, I highly recommend the link posted in this thread.

Still not really sure how to do this beyond my own personal leaderboard. When I initially though of it I figured we have a thread, and everyone has a post and edits it and updates it when they have more times to post. Maybe pick three "cars of the week" (since I came up with the idea, I guess I'd choose the cars), cars that are open by default in arcade mode, and folk have to do those three cars. Can do others as well, but those three are the mandatory for that week, so every week there's some new comparisons.

And yes, setting 4 sounds good to me. I noticed at Laguna when I put my guy on to 5 he was getting a bit squirly:)

See the links in my signature...something like that?

Really, no one knows who the stig is? I know that is the show's schtick...but I figured some UK motorsport site must have figured out who the stig is.

woot the stig!

lol gotta love it when he spun out that F1 right before the finish line :D

ya we in LFS made an autocross layout similar to their testtrack its really fun :P
sadly its not right proportions since the LFS autox is to small

fun stuff, great idea though ;)

Kensei: That's the sort of thing I had in mind, yes. That's a perfect example. Obviously people would choose their test track.

Another rule: One run! Unless he spins, it's THE FIRST LAP HE DOES that counts.

The original (black overalls) Stig was Perry McCarthy, but I haven't heard who the new one (white overalls) is. The outgoing Stig suggested in an interview that it might be a girl...
