Red Bull has finalized its deal to buy the Minardi team from Paul Stoddart after a successful week of due diligence in Faenza by the company’s lawyers and accountants.

News of the deal was first broken on www.speedtv.com on Friday lunchtime at the Italian GP (click here for story).

The deal was finalized late afternoon, and Stoddart received the news in a phone call from his people in Italy just before 5pm. Aware that Red Bull was about the issue a press release, he went straight to the team garage where, behind closed doors, he announced the news to the team and drivers.

Stoddart has always insisted that he would only sell to a properly funded buyer who would guarantee the future employment of his staff.

Red Bull does not yet have a name for the team, but will position it as a junior operation.

Red Bull’s Helmut Marko confirmed to www.speedtv.com that Scott Speed and Tonio Liuzzi will drive, leaving David Coulthard and Christian Klien in the British-based Red Bull Racing team.

Marko said that next year the team will as planned use Cosworth V10 engines, but longer term there will be "synergies" between the two teams, once it is legal to share chassis and other technologies.

That can only mean that the team will also want a second supply of Ferrari V8 engines from 2008 onwards.

An exclusive Paul Stoddart interview will follow shortly.

Finally, we Americans have a driver to cheer for in F1! :)

Good luck Speed!

The new Red Bull team had better use the 'can' livery. It's sad to see Miniardi go :(

They've had a car on the grid for over 20 years, and currently they're closer to Ferrari than they've ever been before. It's not like, given the chance, they were going to fold and leave F1 because they couldn't keep up.

Yeah its a shame that the grit a determination that Minardi brought to the sport will be lost.

I would of thought Ferrari would be laughing right now since they will be supplying RBR with V8's possibly 2 teams that Ferrari could have a 'chat' to during a race.

I don't believe RBR USA will be using Ferrari V8s next year. I think it is quite possible they will be using rev limited V10s .... oh the reliability.

Oh dear.... the name 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' comes to mind

And Minardi will be called Squadra Toro Rosso. It will be run by Franz Tost.

Squadra Toro Rosso is such a cool name, but I can imagine the commentators trying to say it quickly :p

“Team Red Bull” I assume…

You never can trust those online translators though!

 i'll have a look see...

Colore rosso Bull Della Squadra <--- That is supposibly Team Red Bull in italian...

No. That's "The Team of the (Bull - should be Toro) which is Red". Squadra Toro Rosso is "Team Red Bull".

Because that Red Bull team is working from the old Minardi HQ.
