Red Bull has finalized its deal to buy the Minardi team from Paul Stoddart after a successful week of due diligence in Faenza by the companys lawyers and accountants.
News of the deal was first broken on
www.speedtv.com on Friday lunchtime at the Italian GP (click here for story).
The deal was finalized late afternoon, and Stoddart received the news in a phone call from his people in Italy just before 5pm. Aware that Red Bull was about the issue a press release, he went straight to the team garage where, behind closed doors, he announced the news to the team and drivers.
Stoddart has always insisted that he would only sell to a properly funded buyer who would guarantee the future employment of his staff.
Red Bull does not yet have a name for the team, but will position it as a junior operation.
Red Bulls Helmut Marko confirmed to
www.speedtv.com that Scott Speed and Tonio Liuzzi will drive, leaving David Coulthard and Christian Klien in the British-based Red Bull Racing team.
Marko said that next year the team will as planned use Cosworth V10 engines, but longer term there will be "synergies" between the two teams, once it is legal to share chassis and other technologies.
That can only mean that the team will also want a second supply of Ferrari V8 engines from 2008 onwards.
An exclusive Paul Stoddart interview will follow shortly.
