I'm doing the Beginners FF Challenge, okay? I finish my race but instead of a white circle spinning around as the game moves from one screen to the next, there's a red circle...and it spins and spins. Once i put my PS2 slim on its side and the game went on to the replay like it was supposed to. Any idea what this is? I cleaned both the lens and my game disc.

yeah just lift the lid up and back down i had problems with it aswell if it goes tick tick then spins it should be okay my gt1 and 2 do that aswell in the ps1 and the slimline ps2

edit:but not the fat ps2

I had a disk read error on an Old fat PS2 recently. At the end of a 24hr endurance race no less! And I had to reboot it....

Welcome to the GT4 forum, Parnelli. Some of the Slim PS2s seem to dislike GT4 for some reason. If you have another card, consider a backup save for when this occurs.

It's sort of like the "GT2 Garage Bug", only more insidious, because you lose everything!

The red icon indicates its having problems loading the data (dirty disc/laser or whatever), though usually just opening and closing the drive, then waiting will solve this.

You shouldn't need to get a new copy of GT4, so you must have really blatted the disc Master_Yoda.

If you want to clean the lens try a standard CD lens cleaner disc first, though if that does not work, I recommend using a can of compressed air, and a lint free cloth (like you get with pairs of glasses). 👍

Ok then if everyone who has this problem has a slimline PS2, why did I get it with an old one then?
Actually, I havn't had it once on the slimline PS2, but both my old ones get it regularly. The optical drives in the earliest version (ie: the first year after launch) of the older PS2's are pretty shoddy, and very prone to DRE (Disc Read Error). I'd say in total I've had to open up and fix around 15 of the old PS2's in order to reduce the Disc Read Error.

The reason people may be getting problems with the newer PS2's is because the open lid nature of them makes them prone to getting dust on the lazer. :)

Thanks so much for the answers. It seems opening and closing the lid doesn't work for me...the only thing that has worked is putting the PS2 on its side and back on its bottom...i kept doing this over and over and a couple times it worked. The only thing i haven't tried is disc cleaner...i hope i have some here. Yes, Pupik, i finally got GT4 last month....and you were right!

You do when your PS2 puts a big gash in your disc. No further discussion, i was over a year ago.

Well,i usualy just open and close my cd drive on ps2,it works most of the times!(for now)

Excellent info HONDATYPER. My problem has not gone away. I got frustrated and was literally about to pound my PS2 into the ground  but instead i decided to start a new game. I hadn't made it too far into the game anyways (FF beginner's) so far everything is working fine in the Sunday Cup. If i encounter that problem again, i'll remember your advice, hondatyper.

Okay my gt4 got the red circle and if gt1 and 2 had the circle when loading they would do that aswell in the ps1 and slim ps2

I had to go buy a new GT4 and start all over... All of you guys got it lucky..

I didn't get lucky one time after i fixed that red circle it still goes so i take my disc out and i find a big chip in it:sniff: and a week later still no working so i got mad and threw gt4 at the wall and that fixed it it snapped in half.

One week later the same thing happened to my gt1:sniff: so i threw it at the wall and that fixed that it snapped in half.

I think The ps1 doesn't like gt1 or 2 and the slim ps2 doesn't like gt1, 2, or 4

Now i'm Worried it's only a matter of time before one of my gt2 cds get a chip in it:nervous:

And i'm still waiting on a new gt1 and 4

All i have left is gt3 and 2 and 2 months ago i had 1, 2, 3, and 4

And.. um.. WHY is this not locked?

consider yourself lucky. i bought my second GT4(this time a pal one, as i moved from the carribbean to the UK) wednesday.

put it in the ps2 fatty. walk away getting something to drink. i come back 2 minutes later and guess what? loud ticking noice. i get the disk out. it was just eaten.

so i had to buy a new ps2 (after i putted in some other games i dont play anymore, they got destroyed aswell!) and a new GT4 disk today, as theyt didnt want to give me a refund!

so i had 5 ps2's now since the release, and 3 gt4's!!!!

for me the red circle comes up only when a certain song is played that just stopped playing while racing.and the mini-song when you have finished doesnt come up then you know that the red circle comes up.on the pal version about 3-4 songs are the causes.cant remember them right now.get them out of your playlist and thats all.no more reading errors for you.(i guess)

Just took apart my PS2 today and fixed it. To those wondering: All I used was a screwdriver, a knife (Lost all my smaller screwdrives, damn Phillips head!) a Q-Tip, and some alcohol. I am very happy now.
EDIT: It's baaaack.

I don't recommend the alcohol, as it can actually make things much worse if you go wrong... especially if it wasn't for cleaning but for dutch courage!

Also Q-Tip (Cotton Bud in the UK) can fragment, potentially leaving fibre on the lens (a bad thing).

Like I said before, the best method is to spray the inside of the machine with a can of compressed air to clean the dust out (especially on the cooling fans and lazer area), and to the use a lint free cloth on the lazer lens.

Those are just my personal tips though. Good to hear you got it all fixed. It's not too hard a process once you've done it once. 👍

I put the PS2 on a thin metal wire-structure to route more air below the PS2 (it gets really hot without it), and it seems to help. Now, with the structure, I only get 1-second long DREs who pass quickly...
