Redoing my garage, what do you guys think would be cool to do to it?

Like I said, I'm redoing my garage. The place is totally trashed. When it's done, it's going to be a combination of a place where I can do some serious car work (pretty much anything that can be done in a normal home shop, short of welding.) But I also want the place where I can hang out with my car guy friends, and have it look cool.

So, seeing as how you guys are car guys, what do you think would be cool in a garage? Obviously, I don't have a huge budget, but it needs a new floor surface and new material on the walls of some sort (the way it is now looks awful), so those are places that can be made cool already. It needs tool storage, workbenches, and lighting as well.

So, my question is, what functional stuff works well, in your guys' experience? And what would you guys find cool in the area of a garage hangout?

Gotta have a couch then! Nothing fancy but a place for the guys to take a load off.
Also, you need tunes, TV or both.

Yeah, I'm defenitely gonna put a TV in.

I'm not so sure about a couch, though. While it'd be cool, i'm just not sure there's room. It's a pretty average 2 car, single door, garage, and I want enough room to have the workbenches and tool chests, and still have room to work.

But, I suppose there will be room for a couch, now that I think about it. I guess I'll pick one up from Ikea or somehting.

Get a cheap one. It's probably going to get dirty from people covered in grease from working on cars sitting on it. Maybe even go to a Salvation Army. Just try to find one that doesn't smell like urine or cigarettes or both.

And get vinyl. It will be a lot easier to just wipe off.
Or Armor-All the thing and it'll be way easier to clean.
And if the couch is up next to one wall you should have plenty of room for at least one car, and room to work.

Don't forget the beer fridge! 👍

Hey! I'm not 21 yet!

(quieter voice) so, what's a good hiding place for one?

And as for the couch, I guess a thrift store isn't a bad idea. I will, however, get a cover for it, then. I want the place to have a high-performance racing garage look, with the white walls, black workbenches, and red couch, toolchest, and equipment.

The one thing I'm really not sure abou tis the floor. I have two options, one being epoxy based floor surface, and the other being garage tiles. I like the look of the traditional checkerboard floor of a performance garage, but how is the durability? And, for that matter, the cost?

Gotta have the naked women posters too. 👍

Wouldn't be a true mans garage without a bunch of beauties hanging from a wall.

True True. You've also got to have the calendar with half naked women posing in front of/on Hot Rods. It doesn't even have to be a current calendar as long as the hot rods are shiny and the women are beautiful.

Or you can just make it like the one off 2F2F, and have a cards table and a grease and oil free spotless floor...

But seriously, how much room can you take up? Seeing as how you have to park the Benz?

Right now, the garage is full of crap. Crap I'm gettin grid of shortly after christmas. So, the garage is not storage for the car now. Plus, parking it in the garage doesn't make sense, anyway, because the Prius (I know, I know...) parks in the driveway. So, the garage is only for working on the car, and for hanging out in.

Oh, by the way, I forgot to mention, the garage is somewhere in the neighborhood of 18x20.

Now, another issue. How important do you guys think an air tool setup really is? People have been telling me that it's essential, but I can't find justifcation for installing it (it's not exactly my call) I'd like one, but, like I said, I can't convince those who make the decisions that it's at all important.

A Frige is the best thing to have, never can have to many cold drinks.

A nice toolbox, Snap on is the nicest. Always good to keep things organized.

Go to a junkyard and pull out a bench seat outta a old truck, perfect couch! Get some hub caps to cover the walls along with plates. Thats always cool.

On the sitting, how about some bar stools? Moveable, not as big as a couch, can be padded...? Put it next to a shelf sort of thing coming out of the wall, a place to put beverages and food.

Just an idea. If it wasn't brought up.

Actually, I've pretty much come up with a plan. I'm gonna have a couch against the wall, facing two chairs/stools, and a coffee table in between. When the car is in and needs more room, we'll just move them together, and create two extra feet of clearance.
