Right, I need to relax and buckle down to a lot of work and encoding, what do I do?

I've had coffee, I have music on. My inkling is to go and buy a pack of cigs, which I know will work for me, as it does at college, but I don't want to do that for obvious reasons. Or buy a pack of beer, but then I don't want to be drinking whilst working, especially with the encoding bit.

Throw your suggestions at me please.

Excercise is always good. Relieves stress and helps you to concentrate. You don't want to become too relaxed because you need your mind to be focused.

Sounds like an idea, might pop on the rower for a few minutes. Going out for a walk/bike ride won't be happening in this weather!

I should'nt think coffee would be a great way of relaxing. A nice cup of camomile tea however...

Caffeine should help with focus. It does for ADD kids, at least.

Maybe try and find something to motivate you to get your work done? I personally am amazed with the amount of homework I can get done between 12 and 2 AM when I am very motivated to get stuff done so I can get to sleep quickly.

Cricket has started now, so a bit more motivation there. Once I knock the first bit out, I reckon I'll be fine, it's only going to be about a page long, so, be done in an hour.

England 42-4, the definition of relaxing! :D

Have you seen I Love You, Man? Maybe you need to take some time at the "workout station."

Normally, I turn on the news and have a cup of tea. That usually works.

Nah, British news just annoys me, it's all negative and how we're going down the loo, etc. I'm fine now, getting on with it.

The caffeine in the coffee just did exactly what you didn't want it to do. Now you're screwed for the next few hours until the caffeine wears off and your crash goes away.

4 hours late, and I've done the work I wanted to do tonight. May even do some more, and get beyond my target!

When my roommate needs to concentrate on writing he drinks coffee and has a cigarette. It focuses his mind like a laser beam and can write straight for several hours.

Drop the music. I can't work with music playing, I start listening.

By "listening" I mean musician listening: following parts, hearing harmonies and counterpoints.

Low-level white noise, like a fan or something, helps mask outside sounds if you need to cover up moises from kids playing in the street, or traffic, whatever.

Not a particularly noisy area, I actually prefer familiar noise, that being the Hi-Fi/Stereo/Record player (:)). Admittedly, I wouldn't do it with a new CD, because as you say, you listen to them harder.

Just did a bit of exercise, the funny noises coming from the handle of my rower wasn't very relaxing, awful build quality. Oh well.

I actually have to listen to music I don't particularly like to be able to concentrate...

Take a Lorazepam, 2.5mg and you will start to relax within half an hour. :p

I actually find that I listen closer to CDs each time I listen to them. So when I get a new CD, I can do work while listening to them, but after a while I get the idea of the music and I want to listen to the subtle nuances of it, so when I listen to a CD I've listened to a billion times already, I can't focus. But maybe that's just me.
