Ok, I recently got very bored, and decided to try and open a replay file in MK's. I was surprised to learn that it did, in fact, have a garage. This supported a theory of mine that all replays simply store the cars in the race and their movements at various time differences (hence the slight difference between replay time and real time). Now, I wasn't going to be so bold as to change the cars in the replay, but I found it very interesting that there was a garage in the replay file. Now, I want to know if anyone else knew about this and if so, can you change the cars in the replay to little effect?

Replay files do open - and this is how online racers' cars are checked for hybrid activity.

For really, really obvious reasons, the "Change Part" and so on in the drop-down menus are disabled, and if you do pull a menu up (F5 for part, F6 for car) any change you make will be ignored.

Imagine this - your car has 500hp and the replay file stores you having accelerated for 12 seconds off the line. Now imagine altering the car so it has 550hp - you're still down as accelerating for 12 seconds, but imagine how much further you'd go...

It's not possible to hybrid replays with mk's - it may be possible with a HexEditor, but would take forever. If you succeeded, your car would turn in at the first corner in the wrong place and crash - and remain there.

Yes, i figured this would be the case, but what would happen if you replaced it with an insanely similar car? I mean, similar acceleration, handling, and chassis. What do you think would happen then (similar meaning within 10 units either way...)? Also, couldn't you, in theory, mess up your opponents' cars?

Well, you've seen what happens if you make your turn-in 0.01s later than usual, or 0.01s earlier than usual.

Any differences at all and you'll end up not making it to the second corner - even changing just the body results in a different aerodynamic effect (even if the car has the same downforce rating/settings, the car's own Cd factor does play a part).

Nope.

But, in the case of online competitions where replays are compulsory, you can check over the file and see the precise settings used AND whether the driver used a hybrid or not - if you know what to look for, it's completely impossible to submit a hybrid that will get through technical inspections.

First and foremost, welcome to the GTP (haven't seen you around before now, so I think I'll give my welcoming speech: even if it is a little belated). Second, Don't you read the posts in a thread before you post? I mean, it's like you completely ignored what Famine was saying. Messing with the garages in replay files could screw up the replay (permanently sometimes), and might even ruin your PS2 (rare chance but it could happen). Don't mess with this file because you can't control what will happen.

Ohhh.. So bad things THAT bad can happen if you tamper with your savegames then..
