I have a Megadrive and Mega CD

Prepare to dance

Must have completed this game 30 times. Loved getting to the dinosaur.

Not that it surprises anyone but my Sega Genesis, Nintendo, and Sega CD all still work. Amazing how well the old consoles held up. So dang reliable. I recently sold them on craigslist because I know I would never play them again. Now instead of collecting dust, someone else gets to enjoy the retro experience. :D

I have a fairly large collection of consoles and games. I believe the last time I updated my list was sometime in 2012 (late 2012 I believe) and this is what I had. I've since added to my collection though so I currently have more.

I'm currently in the process of setting up a game room that will have the vast majority, if not my complete gaming collection in it and hooked up (all my consoles work perfectly) but as you can imagine they take up a whole lot of space and I have many more pressing matters on my hands.

I suppose you could say I'm a pretty big fan of retro gaming though. :D

I'd wish I still had my Megadrive, but apparently I had to proof I'm an idiot gave it away when I sold my PS1. :banghead:

Will buy another one someday.

@peobryant: I have a friend with a collection like yours. Would love to hear more about it and see some pics if you have the time! Mine is more quality than quanitity. You should see my SNES lineup.

@CAMAROBOY69: Dang! I would have bought that Sega CD from you!

@Flex0r: Buy soon if you can, they are getting seriously expensive. Especially some of the games, and especially in the PAL territories.

@chromatic9: Shinobi! I once got the music from this game stuck in my head so badly that I had to drive home from work during lunch every day just to play it. Between the near-invincible bosses and the unforgiving timing for the double jump, and those ****ing logs on the waterfall; you have to be an actual master of Ninjutsu just to play it!

I don't know how closely you follow this, but Yuzo Koshiro, the guy who did the music for Shinobi, is pretty legendary.

Here's another one of his jams...

Apparently, this soundtrack had a big influence on a lot of DJ's.

A question for all of you in PAL territories: It seems like overwhelmingly the Megadrive won out over the Super Nintendo over there. That is the opposite of North America, where SNES stomped Sega. Why was MD so much more popular over there? Was it cost? Availability? I'm really curious.

You guys did get this INCREDIBLE game though, which sadly never came out here in NA. This is the crown jewel of my MD/Genesis collection.

I've got two Mega Drive IIs behind me right now, unfortunately I have very few games because when my brother was younger he took a carrier bag full of games to a friend's house and left it there, naturally they were never seen again. He left a few great games behind though so every now and then I fire up Micro Machines 2 or Super Hang-On, I'd play them a lot more if the controllers had longer cables though. Having to sit cross-legged in front of the TV feels just a little too regressive!

Argh! I hate that! I lost my copy of Lufia 2 (like $60 now!), my original copy of Illusion of Gaia, and like 3 or 4 copies of Zelda:aLttP that way.:guilty:

I swear I'm cursed to continue re-buying that damn Zelda game for eternity.

Yes I'm very into the Streets of Rage music and Yuzo Koshiro. I grew up in Manchester with the house rave scene. I'm sure Yuzo Koshiro has influenced many but at the time his music was him replicating what was going on in the UK/Europe Detroit house techno scene.

As for Sega, yes my impression was Sega were more popular here, at least for a while. I think Arcades drove some of it. Outrun, AfterBurner, Wonderboy, Hang On and Golden Axe plus many more. We had an explosion of arcade machines in every type of shop/bar in the 80s/90s and Sega home systems had most of the games it seemed, even those not from Sega.

Also we had a big non arcade culture already on Spectrum, Amstrad, Commodore 64/Amiga and Atari home computers. The NES didn't really make much impact faced with all these home computers and Arcades until much later. Super Nes took longer to come out over here and quite a few of the games costed £10 more. Super Nes did catch up the with Megadrive in the end though and seemed to gain equal presence. Consoles took over around 1993.

Mega CD and 32X didn't help Sega nor really kept up with the tech and the SNES with its better sound and thousands of colours on screen rallied back. Donkey Kong was very impressive, Mario Kart was shown nearly all the time on the TV video game challenges, as was pilotwings, super tennis, so it wasn't all Sega.

Glad to hear the SNES got some love over there, its audio chip was just excellent, and was what really captivated me as a youngster. Some of the later stuff in particular makes my hair stand up.

That's what I'm talkin' about

and another! Listen to those horns!

Tragically we never got this masterpiece here in the States either...:guilty:

I have also seen some shenanigans regarding the games not being converted properly for PAL refresh rate and running slower as a result. Did you just deal with it, or was there a workaround that didn't involve buying an NTSC tv?

I don't remember much of a workaround being widespread but my last few crt TVs had ntsc support. PAL had a higher res though and looked better if done right. I had imported most of my consoles from Japan and owned a mix of JPN and PAL games. I was aware of the 50/60hz issue but not sure it was a big deal at the time. You just played what you had.

What stuck out for me was the PS era where we had black borders on games like Final Fantasy, the conversions seemed to get worse.

I have an NES, SNES, Genesis, and N64, but my best retro gaming machine is my Homebrew-Channel-equipped Wii, serving as all of the above in a convenient little white box. It's perfect because with its GCN compatibility and all of the classics, it still has a purpose sitting beside my Wii U (which is now used for my Wii games). Playing on the original hardware is special, but unfortunately I don't have all of the cartridges I used to have.

@feydrautha -- Sample-based music is fine but I'm pretty fond of waveforms. I love Famitracker renditions of later videogames. The two below are from coatlesscarl, I picked another Mega Man X track and RPG theme for examples. Another great channel is 8bitdanooct1. Both tend to use expansion chip functionality for their covers, so this would be playable on a Famicom or a modded NES:

Toejam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron still has some of my all time favorite video game music.

E-Swat had some awesome music too.

Bought a SNES with some games off my brother in law for 40. Only problem was it was badly yellowed. Traded several of the games out for other games for other systems but I managed to get a copy of my favourite Zelda Link to the past along with Windwaker and several PS2 Era RPGs that I never had the chance to finish

@GT_johan: Nice collection man, I'd love to see the SNES and MD stuff you have in more detail!

@laserviper3: a few of the really good RPGs are not too bad: Illusion of Gaia can be had for around $15, FFII/IV for around $25, I have seen FFIII/VI for as low as $30.

@peobryant: Toejam is classic. I had never heard of ESWAT before. Killer music!

Have you ever heard of this game?

The sound samples are un****ingbelievable for SNES and really show off it's versatility as well. Blows a lot of PS1 games into the weeds!

Also, a few more from Gunstar Heroes. This soundtrack is just spectacular; every bit as good as the best Final Fantasy, Castlevania or Megaman, and probably the high point for the MD/Genesis.

The developer, Treasure, had a reputation for pushing the MegaDrive's 68000 processor further than anyone. The title screen for Alien Soldier says it all...(sort of)

IMO their games (along with Rocket Knight & Pulseman) are probably the only ones on the system that were a match for the SNES graphically and sonically. ;)

Also some PCE-CD love. This thing was a VGM machine! Sadly largely ignored here in the US, and sadly, I don't have one. But just listen. It makes me want to set my hair on fire. (and I mean that in the best possible way)

I was just searching for stuff I haven't heard of before and I found this. Wow! Just Wow! MSX had an amazing sound card, and this guy's rips are off the chain. Give it a listen. Especially good at 14:33 and 17:07

I own a megadrive and that's about it apart from my ps1,2&3.

Wish i still had a saturn tho just to play "guardian heroes" me and my friends were addicted to this game for months, true classic for me.

I have a Megadrive (older than me) and two Dreamcasts (only one works flawlessly)

Oh, how I miss playing Crazy Taxi, Toy Commander, Soul Excalibour, Sega Rally and all the Sonics...

  • @TypeRDC5: love my Saturn, wish the games weren't so bloody expensive. I've had to mod mine so that I can play Panzer Saga, Castlevania:SOTN and Guardian Heroes, which I couldn't otherwise get ahold of.

@AlvaroF: DC died too young. It was a terrific system. The library is unbelievably huge, especially considering it only lasted for 2 years.

I've a Sega Saturn, Dreamcast and a N64 setup in my games room. Got a decent Dreamcast selection of quality over quantity (21 games I think), Sega Saturn collection is quality but no real expensive games, most valuable in my Saturn collection is probably King of Fighters 95, I'd love Panzer Dragoon Saga but don't feel like forking out £190.

I put on some end labels on Europe Snes games, so easier to find the game.

Very nice! Love the CIB Zelda and Zombies. I used to play Zombies Ate my Neighbors for hours with my friends. That giant baby is no joke!

It did indeed. It had a quite advanced and very good system. I had very few games (about 10-15, I think) and after seeing this thread I'd like to start to collect some more but it's going to be costly.

Actually, there were over 600 games published for DC! That is astonishing. There is a brand new Megadrive remake RPG coming out for it soon called Pier Solar HD as well!

I'll keep my head up on that. I know there were lots of games published for DC but I never knew that they were that many.
