Very exciting news. Though an unorthodox name, they had to trademark something.

Nintendo
Introducing... Wii.

As in "we."

While the code-name Revolution expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer. Wii will break down that wall that seperates videogame players from everybody else. Wii will put people more in touch with their games... and each other. But you're probably asking: What does the name mean?

Wii sounds like "we," which emphasizes the console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.

Wii has a distinctive "ii" spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people playing it. And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of videogames that sets it apart from the crowd.

So that's Wii. But now Nintendo needs you. Because it's really not about you or me. It's about Wii. And together, Wii will change everything.

Frenchmen will think, "yes!" and kids love pee. Go, Nintendo!

Wii... wow:rolleyes:
Revolution : Wii
Katana : Dreamcast
Dolphin : Game Cube

I mean, do they pay somebody for searching average names? I have the impression tbh........:indiff:

I'm hoping that either:

A) This is Japanese April Fools' Day and we just didn't realize it.
or
B) This is the Japanese-only name, and it'll still be called "Revolution" when it comes over here.

Sorry to say, but that's the stupidest name I've ever heard of for a game console.

Agreed. I doubt you can think of a stupider word that short even if you tried...

"Guys, I'm just going to play on the Wii" :dunce:

Wii? What the hell? I guess the guy that comes up with the names went on vacation or something. But I'm sure Wii means something in Japanese.

Or if a kid wants one "Daddy, can I have a Wii?"

"wiid" was in the head of the guy that came up with this ridiculous stupid little name. but again, its a nintendo, does not have gran turismo, so i couldn´t care less

Gran Turismo isn't the only game in existance, there are better games out there for sure. But I think the Revolution, Wii, whatever will be pretty good and if it has some decent games I might pick it up. I know the new Mario will be sweet and so will the new Zelda.

Its awful. Reminds me of a simple game my brother programmed on a graphics calculator called "Piss-In-Pot".

Maybe my bro could get a job at Nintendo. Perhaps the pissing thing would make a great mini-game for Nintendogs, you have to carry the dog outside "Bruce Almighty" style without getting the dog's urine on anything valuable. ;)

That this is my main reaction regarding the new Revolution name makes me really wonder about the marketing guys at the big N.

Other than the all-pervasive urinating conotations, I would have thrown this name out as soon as it was suggested just because of the excessive use of the letter "i". We've had "i" overload recently, its just such a generic 'me too' thing that's used by everyone after/including Apple, just yet another consumer electronics item with lots of "i"s. Makes the name seem generic and concocted, which is exactly what it is, regardless of Nintendo's explanation...

I suppose the whole "me too" thing actually WORKS from Nintendo's message of "we".

Wii is going to get sued by WE, Television for Women.

That, or Women's Entertainment will just get beaten with a rod like all the wives portayed on the network. :)

If someone makes that their avatar I will seriously have to kill them.

I really wanted the system before I heard this news today. With a name like "Wii", it will win big or lose big.

OMG that is the most stupid name ive ever heard! Your not even going to want to tell your friends you own one! "hey wana come round and play on my wee!"......... What were they thinking! Revolution sounded powerful and cool...... now its just making it look even worse than the next gen consoles than it already is (in terms of power)...... It sounds childish.

Oh well..... Nintendo mess it up yet again! ..... They should have stopped at the gameboy!

Interior, Game-Shop, The Near-Future

Joe: Excuse me? Do you have any games for Wii?
Shop Owner: Well... you can see how high you can get it. Or push that little blue disinfectant block around - that's always a good one.

You say you want a Revolution, well, you know...
Wii all want to change the world.

As far as I'm concerned, the controller rocks, and I'll be happy to have one on my shelf. It'll be the first of the next-gen systems I buy, and probably the only one for two years. I don't have a HDTV, and don't intend to buy one soon. I'll be cheated out of the capabilities of the PS3/X360, but I'll get full use of the Wii.

I'm just waiting for a release-date announcement so that I can put my deposit on one.

I have a HDTV, but I might still go the same route. It's still the most interesting of the three consoles. I hope that publishers will take advantage of Wii's unique controllers, not get lazy and distance themselves from Nintendo even more.

Apparently, nintendo is including all people, infants to elderly, in their target demographic.

...I'm not too sure how the whole old-and-young thing will pan out, though. Especially, considering the ability to connect 4 systems for some Wii-Wii on Wii-Wii action. :D

Did they not see the jokes coming?? haha

I still think its brilliant publicity on their part. Take away from Sony's thunder

Boy, more I think about it, I think it was a publicity stunt by Nintendo. All the gamers are talking about Wii. Granted, most of the conversation is solely about the weird name, but many of them has lead to discussion about Wii's new controller system and how cheap it's going to be. I'm guessing around 200 bucks, but looks like some people thinks it might be $150. It'd be nice, but I highly doubt it.

Most of the gamers I talked to are very interested in purchasing one. If they can deliver good selection of games, I think this one might surprise a lot of people.
