These can be bought/sold/tuned on the PC with mods. While that doesn't help you much if you don't have mods, it is also quite hard to get a handle on how to throw a car around when you have no way to see what it has been set up to do, so I thought it might be useful to share what the their tune has been set to. The BMW M3 GT2, Presale Bonus Porsche Cayman S, Maserati MC12 GT1, Aston Martin DBR9, Porsche GT3RSR and Audi R8 LMS use a "slick" tyre which is different from the usual ones that start out as treaded tyres on most cars you buy from tier 1-3 and for the other bonus cars. These settings are just what you get when you have the car in your garage, go to advanced tuning, and hit default.

Not sure what the effect of the visco setting is, whether it is a typo in the car setup or just an artefact of tuning a car that isn't meant to be tuned. But you can't set LSD and the visco electronic lock setting shows up. Seems to be RWD in the game...

This blows my mind a little, just look at the tire pressures! do tier 4 cars have these tires as well? if so i will be doing some re-tuning.
 
Generally (really, I mean generally, I am sure there is some racing guru out there with some highly specific explanation of what happens, but this is just GENERALLY, ok? :)) you will get a larger contact patch with low tyre pressure, and since they turned on invulnerability there's no risk of blowing the tyre out or making one zone on the tyre too hot, which is why you would - again generally - not want to do that in real life. I think it's one of those settings like bump stops that is highly relevant to your survival if you mod the game and turn full damage on, but with default damage there is not so much incentive to use it other than to slow the car down.

Also I should mention the entire range of the tyre on those cars is set differently, so for example the range of tyre pressure available to the R8 LMS is 18.84 to 34.30.

Oh, and about the tier 4 tyres - it varies. The way Gmotor2 works, and the way Shift's addons to it seem to work, is that you will have

So while we might have a common gearbox and a generic double A arm suspension it will have its own specific way of having those set up and the suspension will also interact with the car chassis file and the physical game-world collision model in its own way. The big difference tends to be in cars that start off with "street" tyres and cars that start off with a slick variant tyre - street tyres can only go to semi-slicks and can only be so good, just a gradual improvement in overall grip as they get upgraded. Cars that start out with slicks - most of tier 4 - are different in terms of how the tyre itself is modelled.

I commented out the huge pile of numbers defining the slip curve because they're not really important. Anyhow, the tyre model treats a "treaded" tyre differently from a "slick" tyre at large, and then you have the other setup parameters that make them different. Pretty much all cars below tier 4 have some variant of "street" tyre.

(spent ages looking for some archive of information from RSC about gmotor tyre parameters on archive.org now that RSC died, finally found some wonderful person had mirrored some on nogrip.)

boxox, can you see if there's something funky about the BMW e46 M3 tires? There's something just not right with most of the BMW's in my opinion. Even when upgraded they feel like there set up for drifting.
 
The weird thing is, I do remember seeing that one of the BMWs was set up to use its drift tyres for race events, but I can't find it now, all of them seem to have the right tyres set. Might have been fixed in the last patch.

The Infiniti G35, and the BMW 135, E36 and E46 share the same racing tyres. The G35 and E46 use slightly better drift tyres than the others. This is the absolute bottom grade tyre in the game though - it's literally called 'street 1'. Tyre upgrades are based on percentages, and for that tyre compound you're looking at 5% gain for front tyres and 8% gain for rear tyres in terms of overall grip. 5% of bugger all is still bugger all.

I'll get to the others later, but this is the majority of tier 1 cars, minus some exceptions like the RX8 that have their own particular tyres. I've stripped the list down to a mix of things that change a great deal as you advance through tiers and tyres and things that are actually relevant to driving - so stuff like tyre wear rates, ai adjustments, other values that are common between a lot of tyres (did you want to know that there is a 5 degree difference in ideal operating temperature between some tyres? well, there is. now you know) aren't here.

Tyre behaviour relates to the 3d model. A lot of values you might usually see in Gmotor2 to do with the radius and width of the tyre aren't there anymore. Why? They're not abstracted in the physics engine anymore, they're measured on the 3d model of the tyre. So the toyota corolla's use of those numbers is fundamentally different than the veyron's, even accounting for the different values, since the 3d model of the tyres is itself smaller and skinnier. I am working on an easy way to get this out of 3dsimed without having to load every single car and tyre first...

Well, that certainly explains why the older M3's are uncompetitive. The works e46 is putting 700HP through those tires. What a bizarre and arbitrary decision from the programmers. :confused: Thanks for the info though. I won't waste anymore time trying to tune them.
 
It's a bit better than 5% (really should have learned by now that figures in //comments are 99% wrong) but the tyre is a street tyre, with comparatively low grip and not so great performance under load.

I will go over these and re-jig some of the included information (some settings listed change maybe once to account for slick/tread behaviour) and put some into 'constants' like the base heating rate and sensitivities up the top.

I will also go through in a bit and take the "mass" figure from the chassis files, the weight distribution marked on the tyre files and the mass reduction from upgrades and put that together at some point.

Not many tyres left after this lot that aren't just for one car, like the Ford GT, Porsche Cayman, GT3RS, reward cars etc. I will get to them..

Interesting thing - looks like cars were at one point meant to switch between tyre types at different upgrade levels. A lot of cars have an inactive reference in their chassis to eventually jumping up to street_10 tyres with upgrades, which is what the audi rs4 and skyline r34 use now.

Car weight and distribution.

Note - weight comment as in GTR2 says weight includes driver weight of 80kg and no fuel. All cars have 50:50 left/right weight balance. F/R weight distribution is measured as 0=all on front axle, 1=all on back axle.

Seems to be a measure of width/height of the tire model at upgrade levels.

Possibly also influenced by rim/interior wheel size as well.

As with a lot of files you have an upgrade progression path past what a lot of the cars will actually allow. From the looks of things if the car is at tier 3 it's going to use upgrade level 3 (2) - but as always needs more testing to find out how it actually works. It sure is good for making Shift CTD when you go and look at tire upgrades - very minimal comments on what these are for - sidewall height relative to width? - but probably useful for comparison purposes combined with the other data.


Upgrade level 5 (4) is presumably for a works car.

Impact of time of day:

Midday appears to be 5c hotter for both ambient air (25 vs 20) and track surface temperature (30 vs 25) than dawn/dusk. 2kmh wind is present on all tracks.
