it's basically the same thing.
My frined has a Nissan Silvana, and it's a wicked powerhouse.

What? Silvana conversion? The Nissan 240sx was sold in North America sharing the chassis and body of the Nissan Silvia, sold elsewhere. Unless your friend swapped engines, the car is a 240sx which uses a 2.4l DOHC, or SOHC, engine. The Silvia uses a 2.0l DOHC turbocharged engine. They are by no means "the same thing".

Now, I know that there are many Protoges with this stuff, but that sector is not many Mazdas.Although, the PEP Boys commercial has a rice Protoge. Go talk to the RX-7 club people, they don't do this to their cars. And I'm sure that there are more mazdas with the stuff on them, but I don't see any around here.

First off, they don't make clear tails for the MX-6 nor do they for the Probes. Yes, the probe/mx-6 can be made fast, but there is not much aftermarket support compared to many other cars. There are a lot of Proteges....companies make products for Proteges. People that buy RX-7's are not usually in the 18-30 y/o range. Rx-7 turbos are not common cars. You should know this. But the car is not in the same league as the cars that teenagers "rice out". And trust me, it doesn't cost that much money to buy stickers and a fiberglass body kit. Then there's the Miata. Most people who are car enthusiasts and who purchase Miatas buy them for one reason: auto cross. Sixteen y/o's don't want a Miata because they don't care about real racing. This is why you don't see many ricey Miatas. You also have to take into effect that Mazda has not produced too many sporty cars in the past few years (I think I covered them all). P.S. I am in no way slamming Mazda

a silvia is an American 240 except it gets the ever so great SR20DET. All this talk about Rice pisses me off so much, its more of an overused word than "ghetto". Over at ClubRSX.com we get people *****ing about what is and what is not rice, constatnly.

This is sort of unrelated to the quote, but isnt Sakura (Turbonetics Racing) the worlds fastest import a MX6? I havent seen much on that car lately with Abel Ibarra and Hoyos Racing being the new quickest(et) and fastest(trap speed) and Steph Papadakis coming in to the show, he might be into the high 7's next year. Next season should be a damn exciting import drag season with Chris Rado bringing out the World Racing Team Pro Class Celica, I want to see that. Also Signal Auto may be bringing a chop top civic to the NIRA events on the east coast, but thats not for sure. Bergenholtz racing also got some serious work done along with a new paint/body work. Bergenholtz gets his dyno tuning done at a local shop by me, he goes there every once in a while. And theres the news for today, now back to the topic

I dont know about "fastest" but I think there is some guy in a 81 toyota starlet running like low 7s. I saw it at a race a couple years ago when it just broke into the 7s. Sorry I dont have a link

Sentra SE-R - sounds like a honda

Hey, what's wrong with sounding like a Honda? :D I own an Integra, and it has an awesome growl @ 4-5k. That growl turns into a very loud yowl at 5k+, though. 'Course, all I have is an intake right now...I will get an exhaust, but it will NOT be one of those 110 db straight-thru designs...those sound like crap on any car.

I don't consider the new SE-R a rice rocket...175 hp from 2.4 l? Bah! Rice rockets are high strung, high output from tiny displacement vehicles! Like, oohhhh, an Integra GS-R! This new SE-R is kind of a "Westernized" car...blah...what's the point in that? I think it's kinda porky, too...which is why that 175 hp doesn't motivate it as quickly as it should.

[RANT] And what the hell is up with the new Civic Si? 2800 lbs.? It's slower than the previous design, despite having a larger powerplant and more torque! What was Honda thinking? My car is ssssslllllooooooowwww and I will be able to take one of those things out! Just doesn't make any sense....[/RANT]

Now that my blood pressure is back to normal , I know what you mean about the Miata...I'm only 6'0", and when I sat in one my knees were jammed right against the steering wheel. Oh, well...

Too bad I can't get power out of my Saturn. It's got decent grip for the corners and my A/C-and-slushbox wagon weighs about the same as a Miata, despite being big enough for a six-footer like me AND a passenger in the back seat. And for all you flag-wavers, it's a baby Chevy.

I guess I just hafta settle for having foot-pounds instead of RPM and a powerband wide enough to avoid shifting every 0.38 seconds, unlike most Hondas. :D

Hey, I don't have to shift every 0.38 seconds....the car doesn't rev that fast... :p

...and you don't have to shift, anyway! 😈

I was referring to those Hondas that only come alive in that narrow area between 6000-7100 RPM. Your Acura is a bit gutsier than many Hondas, thanks to a few extra cc's under the hood. If I had a nickel for every Civic I've left behind on a hill where force beats buzz...

And it ain't my fault. I didn't ask for the busted knee. :( Had to sell my mountain bike... Prob'ly never drive stick again   ....

I know, man...Ah'm jus' bein' a jerk, like always.

Naturally, I have to put my vote in for the car on the left of this post. :)

Stock, for $24k you get:

0-60 in 5.4 seconds.
Top speed of 147 (5MT, but it's not like you can use this on the roads).
Quarter mile in 14.4 seconds.

Plus, with about $4 in mods (yes, that's four dollars), you can be running mid 13's with 100mph traps (on stock tires!).

Oh, and AWD drifts in the rain (and I hope soon snow) are the greatest thing... :D

'Course, I'm a bit biased.

what can you buy for 4 bucks for a WRX? not that i dont believe you, but really what will do anything for $4? can you please let us know, and do you have this thing?

It's a hand-made manual boost controller.

Here's the instructions on how to make one: http://velocity.websitegalaxy.com/mbc.html

I personally don't have one. I'm still too worried about overboosting in the cold Iowa winters.

EDIT: Sorry, those aren't the actual instructions, but there are links there.

0-60 in 5.4? I thought it was 5.8....?

C&D revised their time, right before Subaru jumped on it and started making the new commercials.

5.4 sec is their time. Now, granted - this is only achievable via a clutch dump at about 4500 rpm...buh bye clutch!

i must admit that the impreza WRX is an impressive car...but i am still a major fan of the Acura TL type S which i drive (just not the type s version)

 I'll take the extra four-tenths on my 0-60, thankyouverymuch.

Yeah, I've been jealous of Altie since he got that thing. Subis are perfect for New England, eh, rising?

What's that smell like again? Rancid milk jug, wasn't it? :D

I would think it would smell like burned rubber, not rancid milk....

High RPM clutch drops in a WRX won't result in a burned rubber smell because they're all wheel drive vehicles, and when you dump the clutch you don't have any wheel spin. The rancid milk smell would be the burnt clutch...:p

I set up a thread after trying a full race start in my MY02 Liberty/Legacy RX a couple of weeks ago warning people not to try it in AWD cars.

Dunno about rancid milk, but in terms of pleasant smells, it would rank somewhere at the bottom (higher than 'rotting corpse' but lower than 'fart').

As Josh correctly identifies it ain't the tyres - due to AWD the tyres have more grip than the clutch. So, Mr Clutch has a spin, and since it's a high friction item, it burns.

The smell takes a while to clear - far too long to conceal from suspicious partners....

I think you guys got the slightly revised model - we've had the bug-eyed WRX for over a year now and they've just done a slight revision, part of which included a fairly solid revision of the gearing (I think the the first three gears were lowered) - this is probably the cause of the discrepency.

We've had the Rex here since the phenomenon started - in an ironic twist, we now get what was your performance Impreza, the RS (with the Liberty's 2.5).

I'm not a fan of turbo power, but I'm a big fan of that 2.5 boxer - always said what it needed was a smaller car! :D

I don't know what they use, but it doesn't smell like rubber when it burns...:)

Yes, the rancid milk jug is about the closest thing I can think of that would come close to capturing that horrible smell.

Wheelspin is quite possible in the WRX. A clutch drop at 6500 rpm will leave a 5-foot patch off of each tire. A really good side-slip at 4000 will produce a very comfortable chirp as the car lunges away.

I've got a DVD full of car videos I downloaded of the internet, and one of the videos is of a kid TRYING to do burnouts in his brand new firebird. Somehow, the kid screws up, and when he dumps the clutch, the car just sits there(no wheelspin whatsoever) as smoke pours out of the hood. He thought it was smoke from his tires, but in reality it was his clutch burning...:nervous:

Can't imagine how that one smelled...

Me too! That video was awesome....I don't remember where I got it. I may still have it on my HDD.

It's funny because it's other people!!

All I know about clutches is they're made out a similar 'friction' material to brake pads, which from memory is some type of carbon. The racers here would know better than I would.

Re the WRX burnout - guess that's the benefit of 50% more HP and torque - hate to think of the twisting forces on your clutch and input shafts. Definitely a once-a-year thing...
