Ridiculous? I think so.

I went to school with some rich kids. Seriously rich kids. Most of them did not feel the need to advertise their wealth. Those guys were great guys to hang out with for the most part. But some of them did need to advertise it, and they were all jerks. They were the type of people who would need a $25,000 cel phone.

It's not a matter of having the money that inspires jealousy and disgust. There are rich people who are comfoirtable with their wealth, and who don't make an issue of it, while still driving nice cars and living in nice houses and eating in fancy restaurants and vacationing in nice places. More power to them.

But someone who feels the need to point it out over and over and over in ways like this is really just an insipid jerk and not worthy of the attention they crave so much. It's not the mere fact of wealth - it's the ostentation that is disgusting.

Is it not plausible that a really nice guy bought one of these phones for himself because he really likes it?

Does everyone who buys something so expensive automatically become a jerk? No.

Money doesn't automatically mean jerk attitude, that is something you develop on your own.

Obviously this phone is geared for the wealthy. Same goes for some watches, jewellery, sun-glassess, clothes.

It's not the items that are ridiculous, it's the guy who feels the need to flash it around that is.

I think it is a nice phone.

appart from the materials it is made of, teh only thing 'good' about it is the memory of it. It doesn't even say if it has blue tooth.

Yep, Nokia have some £10,000+ phones too, but they arn't advertised anywhere.

I don't get you. For me, a 'wealthy' person, it's awkward and embarassing when my friends see my apartment or my car because of their conspicuous-ness. Having a phone like that would alienate everyone. Can't you see that?

My family knows a rich guy whose really nice. He drives an accord, has a 5 mil. dollar house, and wears plaid shirts. He flaunts the money in some cases, and reserves it in most cases. So I'm siding with Rumple here. If you have the money to buy something nice, I dont see why not. If you can afford it, and keep a good attitude about it, go for it. 👍

Why should you or I be embarrassed because we are better off? If having a nice phone alienates your friends then perhaps it's time you find better friends.

Or richer ones?

This is the problem: most wealthier people - yourself seemingly included - have no idea how to be subtle with their money.

You need richer friends, obviously.

I don't think I could buy something like this if I had infinite wealth. They're hideous, and they don't get good reception.

It's hard to be sutble when you buy things that are not subtle. Expensive things tend to get noticed. It's whether you flaunt it or not that makes you the asshole.

Walking around and saying 'Look at my $20,000 phone' is a lot different than walking around with a $20,000 phone in your pocket that you mostly keep to yourself.

I still see no problem with buying expensive cars, phones, clothes, whatever. I still say the problem comes from the individual who flaunts it.

I also don't see why richer people need to be subtle about anything.

You have a yellow Dodge Viper.

I also don't see why richer people need to be subtle about anything.

Well then one of us is obviously screwed up. I just have a hell of a lot of trouble even discussing some of my possessions. How can you not?

And so what? I shouldn't be allowed to have a yellow Dodge Viper? Perhaps I should have invested in one of those invisible Dodge Vipers?

I should feel more guilty than the guy driving around in the yellow Civic or the knob with yellow stripes down the hood of his Neon? (:p jab at Duke)

I can afford a Viper. I can pick any color I want. I fail to see why I should feel guilty about driving my nice yellow car.

Because I am not ashamed of my lifestyle and my wealth, and I don't see why I should be. Some people are richer, some people are poorer, if you don't like it then move to Russia.

Those phones are pretty cool.

I'm not gonna complain about it because i don't have enough money to buy them.

I'm not complain about buying them, because if i had the money, i would. Hell if i work hard for it, then i'm gonna use it.

Oh, and Hip-Hop artists aren't as rich as they show. Only if you own some kind of business, for example Jay-z and Puff Daddy, do you really get the money. (They rent everything you see in music videos.)

So you say the problem is people who flaunt it and you don't find a yellow Viper to be flaunting it just a little? I can get away with mine because people don't know what a Mercedes CLK is, let alone that this is the performance trim, but mine's pretty subtle. I even want CLK500 wheels and front air dam to avoid extra attention. A yellow Viper is flaunting it.

I'm not ashamed. That doesn't mean I'm not put off. I guess I'm not used to the wealth. But I don't see this changing, I don't want to end up like Donald "money is just a scorecard" Trump.

I never said a yellow Viper wasn't flaunting it. With the Viper I am saying that it to me is no different than a rice boy with his yellow Civic trying to turn peoples heads. I don't see how I am any more guillty then them of being an attention whore. As well as I don't see why I should feel guilty about driving it.

Trying to get back to the phone thing here, what I am saying is that it is not the phone, not the car, not the price that makes ANYTHING ridiculous, it is the people who buy them that make them what they are.

Money corrupts everyone and everything. As much as you like to think you will be the exception you will not be. That's the way our society is geared, you got the cash you got the power. Unfortunatly in America that is how you are judged at the end of the day, not by the size of your heart or will, but by the size of your cheque book.

i have to say that i kind of agree with rumple here. if you have the money to afford nice things then you shouldnt worry about flaunting it i think. and as far as M5, do you feel that talking about your nice car makes you seem snobby? if so i think maybe you should ask people if they feel "less" if you talk about your awesome car. i know one of my friends dad is really rich and for his 16th birthday he got an M3, i had no problem at all with him telling me how awesome it was even though the car i have was $600. so in a way some people can be an ass about their money like rumple said about the guy with the $20,000 phone who walks around saying look at my phone bet you wish you had one.
yeah these are all kinda random thoughts but anway i think i got what i was trying to say across.

I think if you have the money to spend then spend away. Why let it just sit there? If I was extreamly rich Id have lots of nice stuff. Starting with a nice car, Thats the only thing I would rub into people because the kids in my school think their cars are all tough **** and the 3 best are a steada Mustang with 4.10 gears, a Trans Am ws6 and a 2nd Gen RX-7 turbo II, I go to a Small school BTW

I agree with everything you say, up to the last line. And I even agree with that, except to say that people in general should be subtle.

A Viper is not subtle - no problem, because it does not do a subtle job and is not intended to. It's intended to blast around the track and down the road. No problem - it's fulfilling it's duty. That takes money and brawn to accomplish, so it's not ostentation.

But a $20,000 cel phone that gets the same crappy reception as any other cel phone is ostentatious. $19,900 of that money went straight into proving that the owner is rich enough to drop $20,000 on a cel phone... which is not something that should need to be proved.

If I paid $20,000 for a cel phone, I would damn well want perfect reception everywhere on the globe, a battery that needed to be charged once a month, and I would want it to be about the size of half a pack of Marlboros. See the difference? The excessive money should go into making it a better phone, not just a more expensive phone.

i have one of those!!! sweet i am rich!!!!! also i have an h2 on 34'' spinnas, and i make pretty words that go with beats, and i gots the 9 in my left and a 45 in my other hand.

I hate these phones. They make no sense, and they don't even look any better than a normal cell phone...

The question is i you dare to have it you're pocket.
What happen if you drop it? You would probably start to cry.
I drop my phone several times a day. I even have kicking contest with my friends where we kick the cel to each other. And why do I do that.
Two reasons
1. Because I know how good the quality of the
phone is even tough it wasn't that expensive.
2. Maybe I'm crazy:p
