Thats amazing, certainly the one of the biggest, if not the biggest wave I've seen surfed. It reminds me of this picture my step brother got which hangs up on the wall in our room at dads house, called "The Reef Draining".

Here it is.

That's pretty cool, but does anyone else find waves that huge a bit spooky?!
The photo posted above really freaks me out.. :scared:

I've seen that video loads of times, and it is pretty impressive, but I think that it gives a slightly skewed perspective on how big the wave actually is... the camera angle makes the wave look massive (at about 0:40) because you can't see the curvature of the wave or get a feel for where the base of the wave is (since you have no frame of reference). Spin on a bit to 0:52 and you get a better idea of the actual height of the wave... the white wash lines also give you a better idea of where the wave levels off... also, the surfer is crouching which makes him look smaller than he is.

Don't get me wrong, it's still a killer wave and you'd have to have some balls to surf it, but it's probably around 30 ft high, which is nowhere near the biggest wave ever.

Yeah, while watching the video I was just imagining how scary it would be riding that wave. The fear of it breaking on me is just... Well, scary.:scared:

Was that the seamount wave from "Step into Liquid"? I think they said that the wave those guys rode in that movie was 60ft tall.

...and because the wave crashed over a seamount, there was no beach... so you rode for a really really really long way.

BTW - Great picture Fitness.

Righteous!

a prize to the person who gets that reference

I've also seen bigger waves, though. I think it was in a TGR documentary, they hired a Vietnam war veteran to fly the camera helicopter. The surfer was more scared of the helicopter than riding the wave because most of the time, he was actually higher than the helicopter.

What exactly is going on in this picture? What is the white spot to the left? It almost looks like the water is being sucked out from the white area and piling up where it is. But there's a bunch of surfers on top. Why aren't they riding the wave? Where is the wave? Is it even a wave? What the heck is this thing? Does anyone know where this photo was taken? And what's with the little dot on thop the water way off in the background?

I'm pretty sure its like when you're at the beach and you can feel the wayer being sucked out as another wave comes in, but just in a much larger scale, and rather than a beach its on a reef.

Ever heard of "The Wedge?" I surfed it all the time (body boarding and body surfing). Across the jetty from The Wedge was Corona Del Mar, another fantastic surf spot that has to be the most beautiful beach in SoCal, until all the Mexicans screwed it up. After that, my favortie spot was a half mile south of the Huntington Beach pier.

The best days of my life were spent in these waters. Great times, great times.
