So I got home tonight and my roommate tells me that our other roommates puppy chewed the USB cable from our Logitech wheel off. So I figured I could splice the wire with another USB cable.

So, I find some USB cable and cut and strip it. Then we strip the cable from the Logitech wheel and its COMPLETELY different. The regular USB cable had 2 smaller cables inside. A red and a black. I stripped those.

Then we strip the USB cable from the wheel and there is a bunch of copper and 4 smaller cables that need to be stripped. Obviously, this is not gonna work. What should I do? Any thoughts?

The wheel is the Force Feedback Logitech wheel with the pedals. The $150 version setup. I guess I need to contact Logitech. What do you all think?

Thats easy make the roommate pay for it and get a new one.

As it's happening entirely too often...

I meant... "roommates daughter" who is 16 and has no money. The only thing I can think of is to email Logitech and see if they can send a new cable and I can install it myself....

attach one end to the dog's tail and the other to it's tongue, see if that works

Sorry... Didnt see a "steering wheel section"

You should have both halves of the USB cable since the animal chewed through it.
Solder the matching wires together and BAM! fix'd

Room mate, Room mates dog, Room mates daughter, Room mates daughters dog. Theres one thing thats common in every one of those phrases. If you cant pick it out, Ill simplify it... Its your room mates responsibility. Let him know if he doesnt fix/repair it, His daughter will be be given a crash course in a fake russian accent then listed on russian brides for sale dot com to raise funds for a new wheel.

Unfortunately, it was not the middle of the wire. The damn dog chewed off just the USB end of the cable. So.. where the cable went into the USB connector, thats where it was severed =(

I wish that would work. She would sell for a lot of money too.. believe me.

lol I think you missed my point. Its your room mates responsibility. Chase him for it. If he refuses. give him 2 weeks notice to find a new residence or something. Up to you however you enforce it. But its His responsibility

It's his house =).... or =(

Still doesnt change the fact that he owes you a wheel..Sit down with him an put it to him that your property was damaged by one of his dependants. Its his responsibility and he owes you the repair or a replacement and see what he says. He is probably a decent, responsible, honest human being and it will probably end well for you. If not (and only after trying to talk it thorugh with him first), simply forget to pay your board for a few weeks and put that towards the cost of a replacement. If he asks you about why your board isnt paid, remind him of the value of the property that was destroyed by his family relevant to the amount of board that has not been paid. At this point he is more than likely to re-assess just how important it was to you and say to himself "you know what....fair call". Sure you are living in his house, but that doesnt give him the right to vandalise/damage property that is obviously very important to you. Just remember it is most important to remain calm, collected, reasonable and open minded throughout all discussions and confrentations regarding the issue. That way favourable results are more likely to be achieved.

I hope it works out well for you mate.

He's still responsible.
Get him to fix it or take him to court.
If he won't take care of it, then he isn't a good friend.

How old is she? And how old are you? If youre both under 18, try this...calculate how much she'd go for (per hour) and then divide the cost of the wheel by that amount. Figure out how many hours that comes out to and...

...and you might end up homeless, so bonus!

I say let it go. Call Logitech and tell them what happened, if they can't or won't help, move on, grab a new wheel... and don't let the damn dog near it.

When I was a kid, my stepmom's dog ate my Atari 2600, so I feel your pain. But the $100 that wheel will cost to replace isn't worth a friendship. People get weird about kids, dogs, and roomies. I say suck it up and be the bigger man.

USB cables should use 4 points. Power, Data, Data and Ground. The cable you cut is from something that either doesn't need power or doesn't need data, I'd suggest finding something like a usb extension cable as that should use all 4 wires. Or go to an electronics store and get a USB connector and 4 core cabling.

Least now if you ever had a problem with cable length you can solve it ;)

I can't help but think you can reattach the cable or fit a new one . Look For a keyboard USB . it has what I think your looking for. I'm looking at one here and it has the same amount of wires in the USB as the wheel wire(USB) ...........as far as the wiring idk

Well, the court thing was a bit stupid to say, but the roomate is responsible.
Letting it go is a good option. :)

mmhmm...Court is definately silly....the least you can do is have a chat to him about it. whats the worst that can come from 2 reasonable people talking about it...either he will say yes and replace it for you. or he will say no and you will be in the same position you are now..nothing lost.

Could you post a photo or three of the trashed cord in question ?

Homes..

I'll see what I can do tomorrow. I'm not at home now so I can't do anything about it.

As for asking my roommate to pay for it... he's on unemployment.. he wont pay for it because... he literally can't. I know this and so I can't go to him to pay for it. His girlfriend.. she's in the same boat. The daughter... she's 16 and barely going to school. No income there to pay for anything.

So, like i said originally, I'm just trying to repair this thing myself without trying to involve them, because, realistically, there is no involvement from them. He's a good guy, but just in a hard spot lately (works construction). So... I'm just gonna try and fix this beeotch myself =)

Gonna contact Logitech and see what they say.

As for those that stated that a keyboard or USB extension cable should have the 4 wires... Ok.. I get that. But when we stripped the cable for the wheel, there were 4 insulated wires and a bunch of coper outside those wires. Do extension cables have that going on?

That bunch of copper outside the insulated wires is shielding to protect the signal in the USB cable from being interfered with by RFI and EMI (Radio Frequency Interference and Elactromagnetic Interference)

IANAE but..... go to an electronics store and grab some 6 wire telephone cable. Splice the four wires, and bundle up the shielding and splice that to one of the two redundant wires. Should be fine, just make sure you use eletrical tape and everything is well insulated. The shielding is probably just grounded. I've seen a lot of cheap audio wiring on consumer electronics where the ground signal is carried in shielding copper, wiring this to (-) in two core works fine.

In my experience when experimenting with low voltage DC wiring, things blow up a lot less often than you think they would.

The usb cable is not replaceable(can you take it out of the wheel)? If you can take it out, then you just run to the store and get the same type and length for $5 If not then get a regular usb cable, strip and connect the matching colors, solder, fix the shielding, and wrap it in electrical tape. Case close and now you can play with your wheel again. Also if you tug too hard on the fixed cable the solder can come lose and break off.

Just a few tips from my experience and also, soldering on a wire can be frustrating, just take your time.

Heres the picture of the wires. Red, black, white, and green with copper frayed around.

Any idea what kind of cable I could buy or salvage off something else that would be the same?

Sorry for the quality....

Keyboard USB Red to red black to black and the two data ones idk but there's just two so if you get it wrong 1st time you won't the 2nd ...... Sometimes the data wires will be two green

So... red to red. Black to black. And the others just splice them up and see what happens? That seems a little... i dont know.. not right? I mean.. I need to do this right or not do it at all. I dont' want to F anything up.

Dude you got this....... .....just do it.... Should go easy. Take your time and make sure none of the wires touch each other and tape it up good
