Rooting and Flashing Roms for Android

God no. I won't ever overclock mine, plus SetCPU isn't stable on my phone. There is a reason they clock the phones at the speed they do and I don't want to overclock it and have things running hotter than they need to. Plus my phone already runs at 1 ghz, I don't see how it could be much faster than it is right now.

It's not that bad unless your phone is uncomfortably hot now, it's mainly a battery life tradeoff (which you can cure with profiles), I used the built in performance adjustments in cyanogen mod which has more than just overclocking options. The benchmark went from 850 to 1150 still stable but I brought it down a little (just enough to have smooth scrolling of all menus).

Mine is entirely smooth already and I don't have any lag fixes at all. Galaxy phones already automatically scale the cpu from 200-1000 mhz so there isn't a point to the profiles either.
 
Well So Far So good using the ZMOD for CM7 ,I do miss mediascape but there is no denying how better the Phone has become in terms of Performance (will do Quadrant check).

The Camera Zoom doesn't work though :grumpy: and I can't seem to find an answer unless I install the apk files for a new Camera (Can't post in XDA Android section yet).

But I am really proud of The Mod now .

Anyone want to name my phone :D
 
Congrats. Glad it's working well for the most part. Installing apk is literally what you do when you install an app from the market. Apk file is the proper file name for an app.

I've downloaded a few apps from the Internet browser as apk files and just installed them that way instead of the market.
 
Ice cream sandwich official rom is here and the feature list is impressive. I'd consider reflashing if the make a 4.0 rom for the Galaxy S... Hmmm off to xda.
 
Well my phone more or less bricked out of nowhere. I tried to sent a text and my phone froze. I thought no big deal just pull out the battery, pop it back in and away we go... Nope. Got stuck on the boot up screen saying "Samsung Galaxy S" and wouldn't go any further. I retried many times to no avail. I was able to get it into download mode and recovery mode but it didn't do me much good.

I've been doing clockworkmod recovery backups fairly frequently and the last one was just done 2 days ago. So again I was extremely relieved but to my disappointment my memory seems to have all gone corrupt (according to some XDA forum posts I've found). I can't load any backups because it can't find them, my computer doesn't recognize the phone because well my phone doesn't even recognize the storage and therefore download mode is useless.

I took it into the Bell store and in a turn of luck got the ditsy girl who was more interested in talking then taking my phone in so very few questions were ever asked about the phone. It's been sent for repairs and I'm hoping they don't send it back as a void warranty. Unless they put it in recovery and see the Clockwork Mod and somehow see the root in there I don't think I've voided anything. To my understanding it is possible to get clockwork mod without root and only the root is what voids the warranty. Apparently this has been an issue with Samsung Kies (a lame iTunes ripoff) causing this problem so hopefully they dismiss it as that and let it go and give me a new phone. First test went okay and now hopefully the tech at Bell doesn't void it. If not I'm going to have to pay to unlock my mom's old blackberry bold and use that until my girlfriend gets her upgrade in February and I'll get her Galaxy S then. My upgrade isn't until December of next year... I'm using an old LG Zenon right now :lol Absolutely painful to use after getting used to the Galaxy. Suppose to be 2 weeks to be fixed when it usually takes 4-6. Luckily I live 45 mins from where they send them.

Which Android phones don't do that?

As for overclocking, they set the speed o what it is, mostly to conserve battery life. Most phones can be OC'd ~200mhz with no side effects and the more "flagship" phones can do more.

Titanium Backup- use at own risk. If you flash a rom and have issues, chances are titanium is to blame.
When you flash a rom, the point is to start with a clean slate to avoid any compatibility issues.

Just got an email that my phone made it to the Bell repair facility so hopefully they get at it sooner than later and I'll find out if it's going to be fixed or not. I'm not sure how detailed they make the emails or if it's simply just emails for sent, received, and back again.
 
I had the same issue, different phone.
It was bricked during a stock rom flash. It would get to the dell logo and just reboot.
None of the advanced methods of recovery worked.
Just for fun I tried flashing a custom rom, something I was holding off doing for warranty purposes, and voila. Phone was fixed.
If they find a custom rom/baseband/recovery, they will likely deny your claim. It does however come down to how the inspecting person is feeling at the moment.
Doesn't the galaxy S have drivers that let your PC recognize the phone in fastboot/adb?

Oh That is Bad news ,I am surprised by this but Hopefully The Guys Fixing your Phone won't Realise What you did.I am a bit Nervous that this may happen to My Phone :scared: However I Found out that When when I boot xrecovery if I press Restore ,It restores everything back to Stock so Hopefuly this will come in handy.
 
Maybe you guys can help me here. I have a US Cellular HTC Desire with 2.2 installed. I already have cryomod 7 in a zip file on the sd card and rom manager installed.(free version) I want to upgrade the OS to 2.3, can someone plz pm proper steps to upgrade accordingly. Thanks ahead of time.

That's only if you've backed up the original state of the phone. xrecovery is just a renamed and modified clockwordmod. But again, if you were in the same situation as CMvan, it likley wouldn't have helped you one bit.

This is true. I had a backed up version of stock and the flashed one but both are useless to me now as they couldnt find them. The email they sent last night said 5-7 business days to fix it and then a day shipping back. It also said if anything is not covered under warranty then they will contact me with the price to fix it or they will just send it back. So even if they do find it Im hoping it wont be much for them to fix and I'd gladly do that.

Well I either got fantastic jump for joy news or bad news today. I asked for email updates on where my phone was and when. Well tonight I was sent a tracking number and it is being sent back to the store already... it's literally a 45 min drive from here but I do have a tracking number lol

So the phone will be in the store tomorrow more than likely as shipping to the repair center took less than a day as well. I had a previous email sent to me from the repair center saying that if anything wasn't covered by warranty they'd contact me as I said earlier. I never was contacted about the phone and now have the email saying it's been shipped back. These emails are incredibly generic and are computer automated but it does make me nervous than in no emails I received does it say it's been fixed. So now I wait rather impatiently until I'm called tomorrow to go pick it up. :scared:
 
Woohoo! Phone back today. I got a new one (had to keep my old battery and back cover though). They even took the time to update it to 2.3.3 which is not what I got my phone with originally. I'm assuming I got some lazy employee at the repair center considering all they had to do was boot it up in recovery and see that it had Clockworkmod Recovery. Oh well it's back already, less than a week, and I'm now happily installing all my apps all over again. This marks my 3rd time setting up my phone :lol: but I'm happy. Saves me the $150 I would have spent on buying an HTC phone on Craigslist.

I just s-off, rooted, super cid, flashed the firmware, rom and radio yesterday after being stock for 5 months. Thank God I didn't encountered any kinds of problems on the process since its my 1st time doing everything hehe.

Thank you for all of those XDA people who had some effort posting alot of infos.
 
I've been meaning to root my phone for a while (Samsung Galaxy S) but just never got around to it. All I wanted to do was to remove all the bloatware and speed it up and fix lag issues.

Finally a couple of weeks ago I found the time to do some research and take the plunge. I've installed the Voodoo lag fix, removed the bloatware and what a huge difference :eek:.
The phone is now running way quicker with virtually no lag, I ran the Quadrant test a few times and it's averages around 1850, pretty happy with that.
