Router is kicking us offline. (Problem solved: I just bought a new one)

We bought a Linksys WRT54G about a year ago and have not had a single problem with it. Lately we get kicked offline at least once or twice a day. Sais "Disconnected from xboxlive". We used to wait about 5 minutes but we found that if we just disconnect the router and plug it back in we get online instantly again. Same thing happened back when we tried to play the PS3 online.

So is it the router or some other issue? We have 2 360s and a PC hooked to the router. Is the router junk now or is there a way to update the firmware somehow?

EDIT: I bought a new WRT54G2 that replaced the WRT54G.

Depending on which version you have, there are plenty of third party firmware you can use - one of the most popular of which is Tomato.

As for the underlying problem, has anything been changed at all? I changed one tiny little setting on my router a few months ago and all of a sudden neither one of my TiVo's could connect.

No I have not changed anything and I never mess with the router. In all honesty we never had a single problem with our router until I tried playing the PS3 online a while back. Since then it started kicking us offline on the 360. Not sure if the PS3 did something to it or if it was just ironic timing. I can check those firmware sites out when I get home but I have never had to mess with that before.
If I dont fix the problem by this weekend then I will just buy a new router.

The PS3 shouldn't be able to change settings on your router, so I doubt that's the problem. Did you have do anything special (set up DMZ, etc.) to get the PS3 online? If so, do your best to remember what you did and change it back. Other than that, I can't help much.

If you do decide to get a new router and your WRT54G is a version 1 or 2, I'll take it off of your hands. :D

No I never ever did anything with this router besides plug it in and go. Then after playing the PS3 it would just kick the router offline. Basically. I would have to unplug the router and plug it back in for the router to work again.
I will keep you in mind if I get rid of it. Its been a really really good router but I just dont understand why it does this now. Its only once or twice a day but still frustrating when it happens.
I am going to buy a new similar router and try that out. If it keeps happening with the new router then I will know it is something else. If the new router fixes the problem then I can sell you my old one if you are still interrested. 👍
I also have an old D-link router too if anyone wants it.

If you left your router open to outside connections and didn't change any settings, I think there is a possibility that somebody went on your network and changed your router settings.

Which version is your WRT54G? If it's a version 7 then it's known for its connection issues.

I just said heck with it and bought a new one. I was shocked at how much better the new version looks.
