I was wondering what everyone thougth of the Royal Marine Commandos being sent into Afghanistan to root out Al Quaeda ****s (sorry  ) still hiding in the mountains.

To some, it might look like an admission that the US marines couldn't do the job...? :thatsodd:

The commander of the UK Brigade said that the enemy would "notice the difference" once his men entered the battle zone. :fire:

I'm proud that our troops have been deemed special enough to tackle this tough job, but I am concerned that they will pay a high price in blood to uphold the regiment's honour. :nervous:

Thoughts gentlemen...

On the face of it, it would seem to be an admission that the Royal Marines are an elite fighting unit, and better than our US counterparts. I think the commander's "notice the difference" comment is more likely to be a justification to the relatives of the soldiers concerned, rather than some expression of bravado - which is something for which the British armed forces are not noted anyway.

It's a very difficult war to fight because they're so dug in. I'm not sure that we're going to get a conclusive result on this one, and so I have to say that casualties may be incurred for little or no gain. Which is a bad thing.

Well, the US has elite units and special forces up the wazoo. I think it's a case of ego talking...I'm not knocking the Royal Marines but I think they're going to have just as much of a challenge that the US forces are having.

Between US and UK special forces, I know that both are top notch. What gets results is how much leeway/latitude your government will give, and how well different units work together (ie intelligence/command/infantry/armor/air support)

In recent history, the US has had the problem of too many cheifs and not enough indians. Too much brass calling the shots and too many Senators in Washington deciding what is a viable target...which is why we dropped tons of ordnance on jungles in Vietnam. This has led to our being seen as a powerful yet nearsighted nation...with great power to destroy but an inablilty to focus that power.

But when it works, it works pretty good (Gulf War).

Sorry for the rambling...

i remember a while back while the thing in afganystan had just started around xmas..the UK and US troops celebrated xmas with a game of american football...APPARENTLY UK WON !!! HURRAY!!! :argue:
