R.I.P., RS8 - Audi Supercar Prototype Burns Up On Nürburgring

According to spy shooter Hans Lehmann, the snapper who provided us with these unorthodox spy shots, this morbid hunk of a test car is actually an Audi RS8. We’ll leave the brief telling of this sob story to Hans:

“With just hours to go on the last test day, the worst thing happened to the Audi test team. Just coming into the part Brünnchen at the Nürburgring, this million euro expensive Audi RS8 prototype caught fire and burned up totally. There is not much left of this super fast super car with a V10 engine. The only thing revealing that it was the RS8 are the wheels and the mid-engine layout…

…The fire really took it all; nothing is left from the beautiful aluminium body. Just the roll bar survived the fire making the remainders of the car look like a skeleton.

The fire was probably started by an oil or gasoline leak. But most important, the driver didn’t get hurt, according to our information.”

Wow, that is sad. Such an awsome car to get such a horrible death. But, at least this is a better death than watching some punk wreck it because they can't drive.

Ah wow, that sucks. At least the car died while actually being driven by a competent driver, rather than spread liberally across a road by an idiot with too much money.

I wonder what caused the fire? Hopefully it's not a major design flaw with the car itself.

*Edit.* Hang on, that's an R8, not an RS8.

its an RS8 prototype, a new sportier version I beleive

jammyozzy was right - for now, it's still called the R8. It is currently believed that this prototype will sell either as R10 (Since it has a V10), or R8S, just like they did with the TT/TT-S. As an article on LeftLaneNews.com mentioned, if they choose to call this car the RS8, it will conflict with the A8/S8 line, thus both causing confusion among customers ("Hey, I ordered a super-sedan, not a cramped coupe!"), and preventing them from building a more powerful version of the A8/S8 in the future, which, like the A5/RS5, A4/RS4, and A6/RS6 lines, should be called the RS8.

As we can see from the video, they were just out for a gentle drive. It's not like they were fanging it hard or anything...

Unfortunate loss of a prototype. :(

Yeah, it was a damn nice car & shouldn't have been given such a fate, but if that was taken just before it happened why didn't we see any signs of smoke or something of the like?

Perhaps the video was taken far earlier. or, perhaps he wrecked it. I don't think I have to bring up the Fuji Speedway GT300 wreck to illustrate...

More like a fortunate loss of a prototype. That car gave its life so as to not it happen for the production models. Which basically was its purpose after all. I bet you'd probably be mad at Audi if your car had burnt down to the frame because they didn't want to test their prototype thoroughly.;)

It's not like it would have survived to prototype stage anyway, Audi would probably have destroyed the car when they were done with all the necessary test. If that fire hadn't taken out the car, the remaining tests would.

Yeah, good way to look at it I suppose.

So now they've got no excuse if this happens on production models...

At least it went out in style, It could of ally feel of a delivery truck or something. But still that was a sweet car and it sounded like a monster.

ferrari_chris, they won't have an excuse for any car barbecues after this one. but i am still confused what started it?????
