Over the weekend, I bumped into a guy who pronounced Ruf as "Roof". I've always stated it as "Rough". Another one that I heard was "Roove" (think thick german accent).

Does anyone know where I can hunt down the real pronunciation?

Thanks,

AO

I've toured around the www.ruf-porsche.de website, and not a pronunciation anywhere.

I suppose I could call them... (priceless look on the bosses face when she gets the phone bill>)

It's not that hard to pronounce, actually. The english language doesn't have a sound that's close to the "u" pronounciation, which makes things harder for you guys.

It is in fact closest to Roof - and most certainly not Rough. Although as PunkRock points out the English language has no real equivalent to the umlauted U. Still, that shouldn't worry Americans then - since when did they use the English language? :D

how could you think it was "rough"? I am not the best at pronouncing foreign words but i have come to a certain understanding with other languages than "'merican".

"i" is pronounced "ee"
"a" is pronounced "ah"
"o" is pronounced "oh"
"u" is pronounced "oo"
"e" is pronounced as in "hey"

these are not exact, and are different with different languages. but it is a good way to approach foreign words. the american pronunciations of vowels is just strange.

Evidently I'm the only one stupid enough to think it was an acronym... but then again, I've never actually said it out loud, so I'm cool.

And, don't most current Americans say 'roof' as 'ruhf' rather than 'roof' (long o)?

It's not an acronym, it's the guy's last name. Alois (pronounce it like Louis) Ruf.

The closest pronounciation is "roof", but even that is not quite correct. "Rew-f" is more like it, actually.

I don't say it because I have no reason to.
Kind of like saying Volkswagon. What's the point?
so that when we go to the dealer to buy our future cars he'll know what we're on about! :D

if you're in germany i think u'd better say RooF (famine it doesn't have an umlaut)

i say rough, because thats the way most people are going to say it. most english speaking that is. unless you pronounce bmw (bey emm vey) and VW (fow vey) there's no reason for you to start calling RUF, roof... when its clearly rough! :D

I'm pretty sure that it is pronounced as "rouf or roef"... I speak a little bit german an that's is how you have to say it

I always thought it was "Arr-Ewe-Eff".

That's exactly what i call it!! I thought it was like BMW or VW except RUF!!. That's the second time i "laughed out loud" while reading a post. I love your phonetics!!
