Russia has likely shot down yet another airliner. This time it was an Azerbaijan Airlines flight from Baku to Grozny that crashed this morning after attempting an emergency landing in Kazakhstan. Flight path data from flightradar24 and video from the crash landing indicate that the aircraft’s control surfaces were not working properly and that the pilots may have steered the aircraft by thrust and thrust differential.

Photos of the tail shows that it has been perforated by what looks like shrapnel from a missile. According to BBC, Russian media states that the flight was diverted due to fog and suffered a bird strike before landing.

It followed Mr Trump, who had previously pledged he could solve the conflict within 24 hours, backtracking on that idea when he confirmed during a press conference talks would not begin until after his inauguration on January 20.

Keith Kellogg, a retired US general, told Fox News he would look to broker a "solid and sustainable" agreement to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine by May.

"I think they will come to a solvable solution in the near term. When I say near term, I would like to set a goal on a personal level, on a professional level," he said.

Broken promises used to actually matter and be detrimental to someone's support. Post-truth politics suck the life out of us and make existence grim, grey and depressing. Nothing actually matters.

Useful to know that the Russian Federation control the Kremlin and will very shortly control the White House too.
 
Trump's big plan to end the war is... do less than already being done whilst trying to threaten Putin. There's already heavy sanctions & other actions in place.
I’m not looking to hurt Russia. I love the Russian people, and always had a very good relationship with President Putin - and this despite the Radical Left’s Russia, Russia, Russia HOAX. We must never forget that Russia helped us win the Second World War, losing almost 60,000,000 lives in the process. All of that being said, I’m going to do Russia, whose Economy is failing, and President Putin, a very big FAVOR. Settle now, and STOP this ridiculous War! IT’S ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE. If we don’t make a “deal,” and soon, I have no other choice but to put high levels of Taxes, Tariffs, and Sanctions on anything being sold by Russia to the United States, and various other participating countries. Let’s get this war, which never would have started if I were President, over with! We can do it the easy way, or the hard way - and the easy way is always better. It’s time to “MAKE A DEAL.” NO MORE LIVES SHOULD BE LOST!!!

Taxes. You're gonna threaten taxes? Maybe that would work on red state conservatives, but likely not sovereign nations that are already pretty decoupled from the world economy.
 
Sickening. I do not recall the USA deliberately sabotaging an ally so egregiously, ever, in history. This was a very intentional act to weaken Ukraine's negotiating position, or Trump and his entire foreign policy team is remarkably stupid. I wonder how many Trump coins Russia is buying?

I mean, Trump picked a treasonist Russian asset for the head of National Security, so I'm guessing he's doing this because Russia is bankrolling him. Either that, or he's just that stupid. Either one makes sense.

If Lukashenko had any sort of backbone, you'd expect him to kick up a fuss about any damage or potential for damage at Chernobyl given its situated only about 8 miles from their border.

Ukraine deserves to be consulted on peace terms. But lets be honest, they have no negotiating power here. They can't afford to defend themselves but Zelenskyy still has some pretty high expectations, like pre-2014 borders. If he stands firm on that then this war will drag on for years.

When this war started, the average age of a Ukrainian solider was between 30-35 years, now it's 43-45. What are they going to do when they get really low on manpower to defend themselves? Start drafting everyone over 18 to go die in the meat grinder? The country would revolt. Sending NATO troops should not be an option either unless people really want WW3.

This war has to end.

With that mindset you'll have another war to take some more land when Russia is back up to strength. Russia leaves Ukraine, including the Crimea. That should be the end result. And Ukraine joins NATO.

Not sure I regard "land that was illegally invaded in living memory of a teenager returned to the country that was illegally invaded by the invader" as "high expectations".

What's happening now is exactly what happened when Russia invaded Ukraine last time: invade, stall, ceasefire for territory, rebuild over the next decade, claim another treaty/agreement has been broken or make up some Nazi/NATO stuff and invade some more. Why would you expect Ukraine to be fine with that knowing that Russia will do it again in ten years (or less)?


Pre-three-day-special-operation is a minimum expectation. Anything less is a capitulation from the West, again.
 
I just cannot see Russia going back to pre 2014, you might as well ask Taiwan to join China. It's just not going to happen unless it's taken by force.

Sure, but this is what negotiations (and sanctions) are actually for - and remember, Russia wouldn't even be at the table if it was still so confident as it was in February 2022, and the sanctions weren't working.

I can't see Russia wanting to give back such territory as it gained in this illegal invasion, never mind the last one. Primarily because we all just turned a blind eye to the last one and collectively went "okay, you can have this one, Vladdy, but don't go taking any more", and they just went and did it anyway. In fact they'll probably just demand back some of the Ukrainian territory that they captured and were subsequently repelled from.


Nonetheless it's weird to suggest that Ukraine wanting its own territory back from an illegal invasion we all remember happening is "high expectations".
