Hi,

The other day I was playing gt6 and my 1st gen console just went black. 1 year of progress, gone!

I read somewhere that it's pretty much impossible too salvage data after Ylod.

Does this mean that my garage (100+ cars), 30m credit, 99% game progress is gone?

I tried the reflow the damned thing (ifixit style) but no luck.

If you had saved your game save to a USB, then you would have not lost all your progress. I always save to a USB daily because you never know when your PS3 does not work again. Sorry that you have lost everything.

You could try taking out your hard drive & putting it in a USB caddy, then plugging it into a laptop or PC & seeing if any data shows up. You can get a cheap caddy off ebay for a couple of quid if you shop around.

By the way; when you done the reflow did you use a proper reflow kit with a dedicated reflow flux? If not, I reccomend trying it again with a proper kit.

👍

VBR: No I didn't use a reflow kit, more than a real heat gun and instructions that were described. I made a quick search on this reflow flux and it looks interesting.

However actually retrieved a ps3 slim today and currently working on setting it up properly. :)

So will see if I get time & energy to buy some of that reflow flux and do it again on my first ps3.

If you already have another ps3 there's no need to buy a repair kit.Get yourself a heat gun from a hardware store like Home Depot and watch a good rating YouTube video. It's all just a temporary fix. I have fixed it with and without the reflux kit. Even without it, it lasted me a couple months.

This is usually the result of your GPU becoming unseated because of excessive heat. If you use your PS3 a lot then this is something you can't avoid, so don't blame it on yourself.

As far as your progress being completely lost, that's not the case. From what I know you should simply be able to buy a new PS3 and swap in the old hard disk with your GT6 save data on it. The hard disk cover is on the left-hand side of the old "fat" PS3 as you're facing it from the front, or if you're one of those people who like to stand it up on its end, it'll be at the bottom. Remove the cover and unclip the disk. Then, with a new "slim" PS3, remove the panel on the bottom, take out its disk, and whack in the old one from the fatty. That *should* work, and if it does, it'll save you the trouble of having to buy a soldering kit to solder the GPU back into place, though I will warn you that this is based purely on theory and not actual experience.

If you do that, the disk will just be reformatted when you put it in the new PS3.

From what I've read, it's not possible to do a "cold" swap of hard-drives. They are linked to each ps3 somehow.

V8GTDriver - Like described, I have already done the regular reflow. But will think of doing the one with reflow Flux. Also need to get some more thermal paste before attempting this. (I use the Gelid Gc extreme as overcloockers seem to praise it.)

Anyways, I managed to swap to another SSD on the ps3 slim, so it should be good for my loading times :)

But installing Gt6 with all the updates took almost 2 hours, how crazy isn't that??

Yes, you unfortunately cannot do a direct swap of an HDD in the PS3 due to it being reformatted each time, which wipes the disk clean. This happened to me once, but I had a backup on another HDD from around a year before, so I was set back quite a bit (this was GT5 at the time).

I don't know if this will even be possible, but since no one else has suggested it, you could try putting your old HDD into a case and buy a new PS3 (I recommend the Super Slim 12GB, but get a HDD caddy and 500GB+ hard drive with it, that's what I done) and then hook up your old HDD to your new PS3 and import the data if possible?

EDIT: Sorry, somehow missed your last post Villeit.
