My question is, I'm thinking of getting a Galaxy SIII (on a £26 a month, 2-year contract). I could easily afford to pay for it in one sum, bur I'd feel more comfortable paying for it over 24 months.

Anyway...I'm getting off track, basically, right now I'm using an iPhone 3GS and I just want to know if an SIII is going to do anything 'new' for me(?)
I.e there's no point in paying £Mega for a phone if it's not 'better' than my current one (which frankly, isn't exactly 'out-of-date').

And yes, I've already considered an iPhone 4S (just prefer the Galaxy).

Any and all advice would be appreciated.

(I apologize for making 2 threads).

Ive used both android and IOS and personally I prefer the operating system of the iphone. The Galaxy will definately be better in terms of visual quality like the display and camera and the fact that less people have one compared to the Iphone but thats about it I cant think of any other advantage, all the top end smart phones do the same things. Also have you actually held one? Its friggin huge, too big for me to comfortably hold in my hand!

If it was me id upgrade to something else. If your not fussed about having a better quality display or having the latest phone dont upgrade at all...

Well, the thing is, I prefer my 'tech' to be heavy (ie feel quite solid).
I dont like them to feel weightless.

And, frankly, the quality of the display isn't something I tend to 'care' about.

However, even though all of this^ dictates that I shouldn't buy the SIII, there's still that part of me that wants it.
What ill do, is see if I can have a play around with one, just incase you're right about it being uncomfortably big, and I can see what it's like feature-wise.

Thanks for your advice.

Well, I had a look at the T3 Review of the SIII, and I am very happy with what I read.
(5-Stars).

And the idea of a phone which is essentially a mini-tablet has always interested me.

What size Is the screen off of a 3GS? (so I can get a rough idea of how big the screen from the Galaxy is.

Thanks.

In my opinion and Woz's (one of heads of Apple) Andrroid has more features, customization and abilities. With iOS you get smoothness, reliability and iTunes which is vastly superior to Kies.

For me I have a Galaxy S (1st gen) which I love and I have an iPad which I love. The iOS tablet is great because I don't want or need to customize it,inch where as I do with my phone. All depends what your wanting to do with it.

I have an SII and I have seen the SIII, I do not like the SIII it is kinda like an phone with its shape.

Plus the lack of 4G makes it useless and the lack of color choices makes it more stupid.

Why just white and blue?
What happened to the ever standard and popular black.
I also have seen a pink SII.

You don't get it in black?
Wow, that's kinda stupid.

I have no idea about the SIII but the SII is most definitely not this. My girfriend has one and it is thin, flimsy and weightless. My iPhone 4S feels heavy and solid.

I say the best way to decide is to compare the specifications and see if you need and/or want the features the Galaxy SIII has over the iphone 3GS. Your provider may even have a Galaxy Nexus and that's a cheap downgrade compared to the SIII. Overall it really depends if you want the features and are willing to pay for the extras.

I would like to make another suggestion other than the SIII. I recently got the Galaxy Nexus and I'm loving it. Android 4.0 is a much smoother OS than previous versions, I believe it's much more similar to iOS and is easy to use.

Another drawback about the SIII is the 'unique' micro-usb port. They added two extra pins to it forcing you to buy the overpriced Samsung adapters if you were ever considering an MHL adapter to run HDMI. The Galaxy Nexus has a slightly smaller screen but is very manageable. It's 4G compatible and it's a lot cheaper than the SIII and another benefit is that the battery lasts much longer than the iPhone 4S for general use. Mine lasts all day with regular use and I just have to charge it at night with about 30% remaining.

This is just my suggestion as I personally think the SIII is overpriced for what it offers and the Nexus just about does everything the same.

EDIT: At the Verizon dealer the Nexus was $200 plus the contract and I have checked my settings and it does come with 32GB of available memory.

Well I can't really talk about the SIII but I'll try to make pros and cons for the SII (my current phone) and the 3GS (my last phone before the SII).

Pros for the SII :

-Bigger screen
-Better resolution
-You can add storage with a mini sd card
-Most of the stuff can be found free.
-You can change battery without the fear of breaking you phone
-Widgets
-Cheaper in my country.

Cons for the SII
-Build quality is worst definitely, feel more like a toy than the 3GS
-More plastic
-Battery last shorter (I'm talking when I bought them cause my 3GS battery last like 5 seconds now)
-Less stable system (I had to reboot my SII a few times never had any sort of problem wiht my 3GS)
-No manager like itunes, where it's all simple to upgrade your phone. I already u updated my SII to android 4.0 but it's a lot more complicate than Itunes definitely
-It's a bit hard to use it with one hand due to this size.
-Trouble getting wifi signal
-Trouble getting 3G or just normal phone operator signal

I think that's about it.
I would take a Iphone 4 tho if I had enough money. Even if I love my SII sometimes the unstability of the system piss me off.
If you're not in hurry I would wait for the iphone 5 to get out and see how it is.
The sony xperia as mentionned below is really good also, my mother owns one, it's a bit smaller so it fits better in hand.

I use an older android phone Sony Xperia X10 (4" screen) for just about everything - gps in my car, google sky to entertain the kids at night, email, netflix, and of course gtplanet app. I've checked out the Galaxy S3 and have it on order. The blue version is dark and looks decent enough but I would have gone for black if it was available. It fits very nicely in the hand and is easy to use. Also very thin and light weight and not even noticeable in the front pocket of you jeans/pants. I wouldn't ever want to drop a phone, but my understanding is that the plastic+light weight helps it survive short falls - biggest complaint from my iphone carrying friends with the heavy/glass build.

Do yourself a favor and go try it out. Check out the 4.8" screen and imagine how much easier it will be to use gtplanet app! or watch netflix, or use many of the thousands of awesome free apps available. The only other phone that comes close at the moment might be the HTC one x as it has better sound and better screen. Looks awesome too.

Ice Cream Sandwich FTW! edit: it's very fast and stable, plus you can still customize you phone all day long if you want.

Read today's review.

You don't have 4g S3s there? Here we have 4g LTE models.

Oh I thought the whole world got the 4g model at least.

I do agreed there should be black but I put a case on it anyway or battery covers are $1 on ebay with just about anything you could ever want on it.

I have an S2 and I like it a lot, maybe because I don't like Apple, but I love putting a big SD card in and having all my music with me.
Kies air is nice as you don't have to install anything or need any cable.

Customization is a big plus too.

Still haven't rooted it, but having 18 screens, dynamic or slideshows backgrounds is awesome.

I would say, go to a store and test it, if you like it, buy it.

It's surely is a good phone and is atop in most rating sites for a reason.

Well I got a Zune 80GB over an ipod, because it had the biggest screen at the time so it was good to add my movies on it, unlike apples where they called it a video but to watch any video you had to gawk at, it also had Wifi sync, radio, wasn't overrated.

And as for the SII I can add what ever app i want.
Apple will never allow firefox to be used on iOS as they want people to 1: use safari and 2: since firefox 13 mobile has flash support apple will say no to it even more.

Even though some sites use flash for navigation.

I received my S3 a couple of days ago to replace my Xperia X10. I usually suffer "buyers remorse" on even small purchases but not this time. This is one incredibly easy to use, very fast and stable phone. ICS come loaded with tools for power users right out of the box. No regrets. Now I need to find a good case and screen protector.

Xperia are great phones. My X10 has over 2 years of heavy use and barely has a scratch. I really wanted the size and power of the S3 because I use my phone for email, gtplanet app, netflix, music, games etc including GPS in my car. My wife and daughter argued over who would get the X10. Xperia S wasn't an option through my carrier. FYI, Canada S3 has the Dual core instead of the Quad.

HTC One X is also a nice option compared to the SIII...

Oh no, here comes the HTC vs Samsung wars

Go HTC :p Its much nicer in the hand and feels a lot more solid than the SIII. Battery is a little weaker and so is the camera but the Sense 4.0 UI is many many times nicer to use than Samsung's UI. Opinions and facts there.

I used to have a Sony Xperia ACRO and decided to buy a used Galaxy S II since I have to wait until next year to get a new phone. The S II and ACRO came out at about the same time last year and I turned down the Galaxy S II because it wasn't a Japanese company. Boy was that a mistake. The ACRO is complete trash compared to my S II. As for iPhone vs S III. S III makes the iPhone look like a joke. ICS > iOS for being able to customize things.

Went to a local electronic store (Jb-hi-fi) and seen this close up. Looks totally crystal clear and it's very responsive! Love the crystal white colour.

Not sure if I would save up for it since it cost at least $1049NZD here in NZ.

Which iPhone are you referring to. The 4S?

Random Info: Whilst I was typing this, an advert for the SIII was showing on this site. :)
