I'm a bit stuck on what to do now. If I mod the game, I won't be allowed to play it online. I don't really want two installations.

It depends what you mean by "mod". I really can't see how changing a few textures would harm it, however changing shapes of landscapes and cars probably will. You might be safe with cars, providing you don't change the length of cars hugely (e.g don't replace a blista compact with a limo). If you crash, though, you're screwed. The person you crash into will see your car as a different size to what you do. It could go either way, really. It might just look odd for you, but be fine for everyone else. Who knows.

But yeah, changing colours or textures won't hurt. Just don't change the shape of anything.

For those of you who do mod the game, here's a few great sites you may not have come across, and a few you probably will have.

GTAGaming.com - Does what it says on the tin. There's a nice supply of items, but it hasn't been updated for ages. Probably won't be either...

GTA-Mania.com - An impressive french site with a wide variety of mods and cars. Don't be put off by the language difference - although the readme files don't make sense, they've still got all the details you need. Places like GTA Gaming pass up the huge number of french models just because they can't be bothered to re-write the info files.

Grandtheftauto.fr - Another french site with an impressive lineup. This place also arranges their vehicles by the cars they replace and the type of transport, which is handy when you can't think of a good replacement for something.

Sanandreas-fr.net - Yep, more french sites...

GTA-worldmods.de - German, this time. Looks like there's a wide variety of mods around, so it's worth a look.

If you want more, try a different method to searching for them: instead of sticking in "GTA mods", search google images for some cars that are BOUND to be available for it (e.g Chevrolet Caprice cop cars). You'll get pictures of cars in gta, which link you to these kinda sites. Or try stuff like gta garage mod manager. I picked up the last one in the list from doing that.

Anyways, enjoy modding!

Been there, done that.

Jon- it's a mod you fool.
Same with the Lincoln Stretch and 911.

Evaniel- Do it. Then download MTA:SA and let me pwn you online.

It's scary handling. At the Panopticon at 24:00 in fog, that is lethal.

Thanks to this thread and the members who showed me the GTA mod sites, i was able to mod about 90% of all the vehicles in my game yesterday. :)

I had the ps2 game before it even came out and ive beaten the whole thing. But the PC game is just fun in a whole other way. Modding is so much fun :).

One problem i have is that sometimes when i install a certain vehicle mod, it screws up my exe. It crashes and tells me that there was something wrong with the exe. and the program needs to shut down Am i doing something wrong? And yes, my exe. is cracked.

Another problem that i have is sometimes when i install certain car mods (mini cooper, S600, etc) the wheels turn out to be really big and not to scale. Is it my version or the mod's problem.

thanks

I'd suggest that if you keep having problems, then you'd be best to avoid later problems by re-installing GTA with the default cars.
Also, you can play GTA Online if you don't have any mods :)

That happened on mine too. I think you can change that in one of the files though.

So, how does the online mode work?

Is it laggy, or have they improved upon it since it first came out?
The online is pretty simple. You cannot get out of your car at all, but you drive over named spawn points where you change into different vehicles. There are different servers: DD (Destruction Derby), Racing, Stunt and several more. They all have the same game play, but with different rules. Pretty much, it has a very low learning curve, so you'll get the hang of things easily like I did.

The lag is only bad on some servers. People from some countries seem to have much higher pings than others, but some servers are programmed to kick people who go over a certain ping, so it isn't an issue most of the time.

I introduced James to the dirty backstreet world of DD servers :D

Yeah, MTA. In my honest opinion, SA-MP is crazily hard unless you know where everything is. So all that kept happening to me was getting lost or getting killed. MTA you're quick into the action, although you can't walk outside the car...

BUT- DD Racing and Stunt Freeroams and great fun too.

@James, I dunno what happened yesterday, but my ping was over 1000!
PC has a crack habit I think...

I just downloaded MTA and had a little play. It is very fun actually. Just now i was in a race where we were on bikes going round a nearly exact replica of GT4's GRAND VALLEY SPEEDWAY!!! How crazy was that!? I had a Destruction Derby Style race called Cops 'n Robbers Fun. Needless to say i didn't win although that was very fun!

Try Betafield.de DD server! It's great fun.

I am almost always on [SKC] Racing Server. (If my girl isn't around that is!)

Hey Dunc, maybe one day you'll join G.T and I for a road trip in Betafield Stunt...

We travel in convoy to places on the map, James usually in a Dune, me in a Bus.
Perhaps you could have your own signature vehicle...

Yeah. I much prefer the stunt/DD servers to the racing ones. I've never really thought of GTA as a racing game IMO.

Dunc, have you ever tried a Wankenstein DD Match?

It's a larf. Especially when you team up. [GTP].
