Multiple possibilities the biggest reason I can think of is a problem with the HDD. Basically nothing is flawless and when you're messing with any sort of computer it pays to back up anything important. I understand the why behind the copy protection but I don't think it's practical when it's going to cause more problems then it solves.
Problem: PD sees that people are copying each other's save files in an effort to keep from having to play through their game, or maybe making back ups incase you waste all your money and don't like the outcome. This way PD forces you to be more careful when making choices and investing in cars, thus giving everyone the same playing field.
That's my take on the whole thing anyway, I think they should have thought this out more and found a better way to keep people from sharing files if at all possible. If this is the only way to restrict file access then they should have scrapped the idea, cause I know I for one am very prone to wiping out my hard drive on a semi-regular basis when it gets full. Now what's going to happen when I can't back up my save file, I'm going to get agitated and never play GT5 again cause I'll have lost all the time invested in getting to where I was.

Spark, PLEASE do a HD Backup and Restore of your first level or two (I'm already at Level 16 and a million cr., so I don't want to test this myself!), to see if that at least restores GT5's Save Game Data (or point me to a thread where this is definitively tested).
'Theoretically', you should be able to back up like that, but it's pretty hit and miss.
This is what SHOULD be enabled (if it isn't already), if you ask me... People are NOT going to swap entire HD backups, just to get a GT5 Game save cheat (they would lose all their other protected saves doing so) as the data size would be prohibitive.
I only PRAY that Kaz's personal PS3, with all HIS hard earned credits and career crashes hard... Then we might see a fix.

He can not do a HD backup and then restore. since his savegame is already corupted that wont help him.
There is nothing he can do other than start over.
As already mentioned there can be many reasons why your savegame corupts. The best thing you can do to prevent it, is to always be 100 % sure that the drive is not writting or reading while you quit the game. (Hint never quit a game while the yellow diode on the front of your PS 3 is on)
On the positive side, although not much help for the OP. But PD has anounced that a future patch later this month will allow backup off savegames.

Klondike, I wasn't suggesting it as a FIX for his corrupted game save. All I asked for was, as he is only on Level 1 or 2 so far, he would lose little by doing a Backup and Restore if it DIDN'T restore the game save.
And then we would all know definitively whether the Backup HD really DOES work or not.

And the data transfer utility for ps3>ps3 will copy it as well. http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/transferutility.html
I am waiting for my transfer to finish as my launch ps3 was showing signs of failure.

Did a full backup yesterday. With the game constantly saving/installing I don't want to risk a corrupted save.
Would be great if Sony could somehow program the full backup utility so that after doing one full backup, on your next one you could select just to update/rewrite the PS3 save data folder/section within full backup file.
Anyway, should be able to backup GT5 game saves in the December patch.

There were several reports in Shift that, as it also has a protected Game Save, some people did a Restore and it STILL didn't restore the Game save... just the rest of the HD.
I would MUCH prefer someone actually DO THIS (that has little to lose) so that we don't rely on a 'this OUGHT to work'...

There is even a caveat in the Backup HD procedure that warns that SOME protected content MAY NOT copy over.
Now that Kaz says a patch is coming, I'm not QUITE so paranoid, but it would STILL be good if someone just starting out on their Career would check this. I'm Backing Up my HD as I type, but it would be good to know whether there is any point doing this, rather than apocryphal pronouncements from people that it is obvious have actually NOT DONE THIS yet....
