Just save it as a BMP then go into a image editing program (ever a simple one as microsoft photo editor) and save it as a JPEG......then delete the BMP.......

I don't know if there is any easier way than that

Sometimes on my internet explorer when i save an image it saves it as BMP and i cant change it. Yet when i try to save the same picture using Mozilla, it saves it as a jpeg.
The same situation happens when i try to save a gif image.
If you have mozilla then use that or if you dont then just download it. If that doesnt work then i cant help you. Good luck 👍

Clear out your temporary internet files. This used to happen me with Internet Explorer and the problem would go away when I cleared out the internet cache.

Personally, I find that Mozilla is faster at rendering pages - not least because it starts to render the page as the page is downloading, unlike IE, which waits for the whole source file first. But then I find that if I'm application-switching, Mozilla takes MUCH longer to restore to an Active window than IE.

On the Wallpapers issue, don't forget that desktop patterns have to be saved as BMP files.

Huh? I just save them as .JPG or .JPEG (I don't even know the difference, but anyway) and then right click, set as wallpaper.....It seems to do the job for me :)

How small is your hard drive that you're worrying about 1 MB/picture (for a picture that looks significantly better, BTW) ?

It's 120 GB, only around 5-6 are free......but it's a problem when I got 3174 Wallpapers.....

It's better to occupy 721 mb instead of 3-4 GB, don't you think :sly: ?
PS: I don't really see the difference between a BMP and JPG at 1280X1024....

Maybe in Windows 95 or 98 but in recent versions of Windows, there's nothing stopping you from using JPEGs as your desktop image.

Saving a JPEG off the internet as a BMP doesn't make the picture quality any better - any picture quality it's already lost by being JPEG compressed cannot be regained. You may as well just save it as it is to save disk space - converting to BMP will just make the file bigger without increasing the quality.

There are still many pictures that actually are in .bmp format on the internet (you can check the source code to make sure, although the extensive load time is generally an indication) and, yes, you can see the difference in those ...

You can tell the difference sometimes - if it's using a decent amount of JPEG compression. Low quality, highly compressed JPEGs are obvious because they look awful compared to the original image. If you've got a high quality JPEG vs. a BMP uncompressed original you might be able to tell the difference, but it can be hard to tell high quality JPEGs from the original image. For websites and publishing your photos online, there's no real reason to use BMPs. They result in far bigger files. I don't think that BMP is even a standard web format for images, so websites shouldn't be using them without good reason.

From what I remember, the PNG image format allows for compressing image files without losing quality, but doesn't compress the files as much as JPEGs can.

So what do the 3,173 other wallpapers do besides take up seemingly precious space?

I used to have this problem with older versions of Windows and IE, and i think clearing your cookies does the trick.

You missed one :lol: They'r all great fotos and yes, I'm quite a car nut, so that should explain it :)
I was going for the ones that weren't serving as your current desktop.

I did the same thing, sometimes my IE saved the images as bitmap, but after a while it stopped it must just be a glitch or something, Meanwhile i just used mozilla.

Listen to him. He's right. 👍

Next time it happens, do this: Internet Properties > Delete Files > Delete all offline content > OK

This should fix the problem. Clean your Temp files regularly.
