The winners of the first race at Phillip Island:

* Noroyuki Haga (JPN, Ducati) won his 34th race of his career while getting the first victory of 2009 in Race 1.

* Texas' own Ben Spies (Longview, TX) won the second race. He finished 16th in an effort to rally for a better position in the first race, but held off a very game N. Haga. Spies was talking about how the Ducatis were powerful and handle well, but his Yamaha held together.



Ben Spies may end up being like another successful Texan- Colin Edwards. Best of luck to him and the other riders.

I just got done watching race 1. What a show of determination and talent by Spies! :bowdown:
 
You know, as a native Texan, I've been sold on Ben Spies for the longest. The racer out of Longview, TX is going to go pretty far. Maybe he'll be as good as another great Texan- fellow Houstonian, Colin Edwards.

I didn't see that race at Assen. He can win championships. It's just about how well he can stack up against other talent from all points of the world.
 
It was a Ducati beatdown at Kyalami this past weekend. I think "Nitro" Haga won both races. Ben Spies is still very game on the SBK circuit. If Ben Spies wins a World Superbike championship or more, I'd love to see him win the MotoGP title, if he steps up to MotoGP.

The next round of the championship will be in Ben Spies' home country- the race at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah, USA. This will be on the weekend of May 29-31.
 
Ben Spies had an amazing SBK weekend at Miller Motorsports Park. He had Super Pole and won both races. The Texas boy from Longview is just trying to tear into that lead Noroyuki Haga has in the championship.
 
The Superstock 1000 race at Monza was awesome. Winner won by 0.010 seconds, awesome battle!
 
Ben Spies won both races at Donnington and has pulled to within 14 points of Haga for the points lead

Haga was in a nasty accident but nothing too serious, the broken vertebrae appears to be from an earlier accident.

The next race isn't for another 4 weeks, as much time as the doctors said Haga needs to rest
 
Have I mentioned that I'm proud of fellow Texan, Ben Spies? I didn't really see the highlights from the latest round. Great job for the young man from Longview, TX. There won't really be much bigtime racing for at least two weeks. So enjoy the break... and be ready to race all out when most major racing series resume!
 
Donnington Park action being shown right now on Speed Channel. Ben Spies took Race 1, followed by Max Biaggi and (I believe) N. Haga rounding out the podium. Congratulations to Spies for another victory.
 
Your 2009 manufacturer's champion is Ducati. The title fight is going right down to Portimao in three weeks between Noroyuki(?) Haga and Ben Spies. The story for Haga has me picking him to win the title as a sentimental favorite. Of course, I'm pulling for a fellow Texan to win one for Texas and the United States. I think Ben Spies is going to win at least a championship in both World Superbike and MotoGP.

Who would you go for- Haga or Spies?
 
I would go for Haga every time. Spies is an amazing talent though.
 
Spies is starting on pole this weekend, Haga only managed to qualify 10th

Hopefully should be Spies' Title barring a big mistake
 
Spies is the Champion. He won race one. Haga crashed out. Haga was second in the second race but Spies came home in fifth to take the title.

Brilliant debut season from Spies and well deserved title even though I would have much rather seen Haga as champion.

One year in World Superbike... and one championship for Longview, TX's Ben Spies. He had to work for it, though. I even congratulated Ben Spies on his Facebook fan page.
 
Congratulations to both Ben Spies and Noriyuki Haga. Both ran brilliant campaigns this year, but Spies came out on top. I have nothing but respect for both riders.
 
Does anybody know who Spies is riding for in MotoGP next year? Would like to see him riding for Suzuki next year!(My favorite bike brand)
 
I think if Spies steps up to MotoGP, it's going to have to be either Yamaha or Honda because they are the ones really doing any damage. MAYBE Ducati wouldn't be bad, unless you're Casey Stoner.
 
The most recent round of the 2010 SBK championship just wrapped up at Phillip Island. I forgot who won the two rounds, but congratulations to the two winners.

Leon Haslam won race 1(his first) on the suzuki nipping Fabrizio by .004 secs!, while Mr. Carlos Checa took the unbelievable come from behind win in race 2.

Some of the most entertaining racing I've seen in a while, four wheels or two, sbk show is fantastic! My what a balls out track phillips island is.....
I'd be open to this thread being in the general motorsport forums. Whatever works.

Yeah i enjoyed watching these 2 races very much!!!there never seems to be a dull moment in superbike racing ....:):)

I moved this to the Motorcycles thread since my AMA Supercross thread was moved here. It's still about motorsports, so it's still fair game to discuss this here. It's only as long as there's an open thread to discuss such motorsport series.
 
it was great to see the gsxr1000 so competitive! Leon did some great riding to place 1st and 2nd over the 2 races and there was heaps of action to see. I felt sorry for Chris Vermulen on the kwaka dropping it in both races (if I remember correctly), not a great start to the season for him. Looking forward to the next round.
 
Suzuki seems to become again competitive this year, awesome races by Haslam indeed also Guintoli did good than his usual, that proof the goodness of the GSX-R, I think that Yamaha lose a lot of ground this year... in race 1 both Toseland and Crutchlow were out and in race 2 they did 9-10, surely not what we expect from the Yamaha champion team. But also the season is just started everything can happen!
