Practice Event No 2 : Mugello - 5 Laps - Dry - Random Grid

- For whatever reason the quality of this video is particularly bad. It's time for a new HD camcorder. As soon as the economy improves.

- For the first few corners mhm and I are side by side, trying to give each other room. Then at the approach to turn 4 (Materassi) I'm hit from behind. At that point I was out of control and spun back onto the track (ridiculous really) but there was nothing I could do.

- Toward the end I have a good battle with bullie77. Amazing how much more enjoyable it can be when you're patient and bide your time.

- I caught the Frawe, bullie77, Hairy-Dave incident toward the end of the video. I then replay it in slow motion at the very end. When I saw Frawe on the track, I immediately thought, "uh-oh" and backed off. Good thing. But it was interesting to watch--pretty spectacular.

In Mugello I was responsible for the crash in the last round where other drivers crashed into me. I was over the curbs and lost control and crashed into the wall. The only way for me getting back of the track was going reverse and steer right to the track. I shifted reverse but didnt touch the throttle and wanted to wait that others could pass me and suddenly my car made a jump backward on the track and the rest was a complete mayhem. I want to appologize for this. It was not my intention.

I was the first to hit you and, as I said last night, I don't think that apologies are needed. I passed hairy-dave in the 'Esses' and headed to the straight full-throttle. Suddenly your car appeared on my screen crossing the track backwards from left to right (clearly out of control) and I couldn't avoid any way the (violent) crash. What I feel frustrating is that there was clearly a lag issue that caused me to see you only when it was too late. That straight after the "Esses" has a good view downhill from the beginning until the braking zone, right before the right handed hairpin, so I should be able to see you clearly loosing control of the car well in advance and thus avoiding the crash. That wasn't the case.

Like I said also yesterday, although the overall online runs smoother there are clearly some issues in large lobbies, and they become more severe in ovals and under rain (no matter what track). Now if you get oval+rain...

I dropped out yesterday at Redwood because it would be either that, or I would smash the controller against the wall! In the entire event I was systematically punted by 2/3 drivers that I will not identify (and no arvore, none of them is you!) because its not the issue. The issue is, and I've said in lobby after Mont Tremblant, RESPECT for your fellow drivers! Mont Tremblant has a hairpin right before the end of the lap - How the hell can someone expect to do this hairpin, almost blind (its in the top of a slighty climb) braking in the 50/75 meter zone?!

Fair racing IS fair racing. Mistakes happen to everyone and they are well detected and understandable by others, but entering full speed on an hairpin (for example) and expecting to hit another driver to help to turn is all but that! Either we race fair or we don't, there's no middle term here!

From your video it seems clear what I've stated above about that accident. If you notice, on the video Frank only becomes visible shortly after the yellow flag appears and I was pretty much closer to Frank that you (Dave was in the middle). I clearly couldn't avoid it... everything was too fast...

Yes, that's exactly how I remember it as well. Unfortunately, right at that point I had about a minute of black video. I was scared the rest of the event would be like that but it kept fading in and out. Anyway, it was a nice few laps. 👍

Practice Event 3: Mont Tremblant - 5 Laps - Dry - Random Grid

- I was surprised and optimistic to see everybody made it around the first big right hander without incident. But it all went "downhill" from there.

- At 0.49 one car knocked off to the right, although to be fair, there's not really room for 3 wide around that bend.

- At 0.58, I'm desperately trying to avoid making contact with the cars in front of me. I don't think I actually did touch but maybe from his perspective I did.

- At 1:09 I brake very late, knowing there are a lot of cars behind me. Amazingly enough at 1:11 I'm still hit from behind. At 1:15 I'm tapped a second time and it's pretty much over. At 1:22 I desperately struggle to keep the car shooting back onto the track and clouting other cars while the person who hit me continues on as if nothing happened.

- At 1:37 two cars re-enter the track oblivious to who's coming by and I get clouted and nearly lose control, allowing another car to overtake me.

- 2:17 (Hi Mario--waiting to see this pass on your video--LOL)

- 3:07 Honestly, this was a bit optimistic on my part and I consider this more of a racing incident. But I still think I had the racing line and I should have at least been allowed room to make the corner.

- 4:02~4:07 Some 'generous' defending his position from bullie77.

- 4:48 Regrettable contact but I was about to be sandwiched.

I admit that I might got a little too aggressive in this pass, but I recall seeing Mario off track and you get a little wide, opening a gap on the inside and... I couldn't resist! Sorry though for the small bump on the side.

I saw you right at my tail and this right turn is the one which is the hardest to me on this track, so I reckon I was afraid that if I brake early you'd hit me, so I went to the right of the track to try to do it all in the inside (instead of the classic out-in-out) slower, even if it would meant to give up the position. Possibly this surprised you (although that was the intention) and made you miss the brake point.

6:40 Dog spelled backwards = bullie. (What happened there?)

Coming out the corner I get a little touch on the left rear of my car (although I reckon its likely it was a innocent race touch). Nevertheless, it was enough to get me off-track. Then I couldn't avoid and hit full front the rails which are uneven at that point, causing me to be full stop there.

Practice Event 4: Misano - 3 Laps - WET - Random Grid

Misano is also my chance to be a bit embarrassed as I had a few regrettable incidents.

- On a positive note, notice how much smoother the starts are with very little lag and jumping/shaking cars.

- 0:16 - First look behind me. Looking good. 👍

- 0:22 - Braking and looking behind me. Uh-oh.

- 0:37 - Things getting a little chaotic. But at least on the positive side, we can say, 16 players, in the rain, all bunched together, there's very little lag. 👍

- 1:00~1:07 - It seems at least 7 incidents of contact from people simply being way too impatient into that chicane.

- 1:14 - Swiped Biggles (sorry) and then got off line and hit Eddie Trout coming back onto the track.

- 2:40~2:50 - This was messy. Biggles swiped ChilledAnt while he was coming back onto the track, which knocked him a bit sideways and I simply couldn't avoid him. Somebody then hit me and we all spun around. I consider this all a regrettable racing incident.

- 4:44~5:02 - This all happened very quickly and at the time I wasn't sure what to do. But looking at the video now in retrospect, with time to analyze it, I believe I was in the wrong here and this incident was my fault so I have to apologize to Frawe. At 4:44 I see him get a little loose under power and decide to take advantage of it. At 4:50 I realize I'm ahead of him by looking at the interval timer and commit myself to the corner. But I'm going too fast to really leave room. At 4:52 I look back to see and notice him off the road. At this instant I was confused. I never felt any contact and wasn't sure if I pushed him off or if he drove off to avoid me or simply drove off on his own. While I was busy looking behind, at 4:53 I looked forward again to see Hairy-Dave rejoining the track and I side swiped him. I regained control and tried to get around the corner and then hesitated and looked behind again at 5:00~5:02, unsure of what to do. I wasn't sure if I was really responsible for putting Frawe off (although looking at the video I'm pretty sure I was) but saw them both on the track and moving so ultimately decided to keep going. In retrospect, probably the wrong decision, although I'll wait for Frawe to confirm what he saw from his perspective.

-5:44 - I really thought I was ahead of Arvore at this point but stuck to the inside just to be sure. (Good thing).

- 5:59 - I didn't think I would be able to avoid making contact so I steered to the inside but unfortunately I had no grip and was on the brakes the whole time but the inevitable happened at 6:05. This was clearly my fault and seeing that he went off, I pulled to the side at 6:08. With Arvore coming back into the track from the right, and me on the left, I thougth it best to leave the tarmac. Unfortunately, Misano is such that when you leave the track, you bog down immediately. But I have myself to blame for this.

- 7:32 - Eddietrout and I do the Schumacher-Hakkinen-Zonta routine on Arvore. 7:35-the only real lag I experienced in this race as Trout shoots forward and back.

- 7:38 - Kaboom! Hairy-Dave immediately apologized for this in the lobby although with the poor audio of so many mics, I couldn't tell exactly what he said. At the time, I didn't even know who hit me and wondered if it was lag together with eddietrout. At 7:51 Hairy-Dave makes it clear he's waiting for me and I rejoin.

I think the idea of stopping for someone if you hit them is a bit laughable in the context of some of the racing action. If everyone politely stopped at the first corner of Misano for instance, the race would have come to a complete standstill!

Clearly, the first lap represents 50% - 80% of the problem, as there are often multiple, escalating collisions. Everybody should slow down & focus on avoiding contact for the first lap or two, NOT on driving as fast as possible.

It strikes me that some kind of qualifying lap, or not setting the grid on "random", might actually work better. If the grid were set on "fastest", the drivers would be grouped according to speed & there would be less reason to barge aggressively through the field to try & catch up with a rival. Of course, it would make it easier for the faster drivers to dominate, but that would at least be "realistic" & would probably lead to much cleaner, fairer races.

The other alternative would be to set the field on "reverse". This would again have the advantage of grouping drivers by speed, so that you would be close to your rivals. In this situation the faster drivers would have to work their way through the field, which would be fine in a longer race, as long as everyone is patient & drives carefully. It should lead to some more interesting "handicapped" races. The trouble with "random", with a big grid, is that it scatters the drivers all over the grid & places drivers in a position of not knowing where their chief rivals are, the result being everyone just drives as fast (& as recklessly) as they can in a desperate attempt to get to the front. You have a GTP tag in front of your PSN ID (at least on your profile--you weren't racing with it, for reasons which I well know). I don't have one and haven't applied for one. But I've read the OLR rules and think they're a good standard to adhere to. I'll quote it for you:

If there’s contact between drivers that results in the guilty driver making up places on the innocent driver, the guilty driver should immediately allow the innocent driver to pass freely to re-establish their position. This rule should be observed, even if it means the guilty driver has to allow drivers not involved in the incident to pass while waiting for the driver they contacted.

I'm the first one to admit that this is not always realistic and I'm guilty of not always adhering to it myself. (Just see the Misano incident above an as an example). But the reason it's there is to FORCE players to take preventative steps to avoid hitting each other and setting a penalty standard which is severe enough that you think twice before making 'questionable' passes. In real life racing, people would never pull the kind of things they do in a game lobby because there are no consequences such as 'Black Flags' or stewards who will kick you out of the next event if you pulled off a dodgy move. Let alone the thought of risking life and limb if you rear end somebody at double their speed.

The reverse grid situation is an idea. But it does present a problem, and especially so now that the leaderboards have been wiped. I think you underestimate just how competitive some people are. And I wouldn't put it past some of the aces here to purposely hold back during their practice sessions or brake 100m before the finish line, just so they don't have top ten times and will start the race further up the field. It's the first thing I thought of and I'm NOT that sneaky.

Again, as I've said before, this whole event was designed and run to keep the field close together to test lag. I would never run one of my classic events like this because it's asking for trouble. But you're right, people do need to slow down and take it easy, especially on the first lap. Easier said than done.

I'm sorry Frawe. I was afraid of this after watching the video. But the fact that I couldn't feel or hear anything at the time is why I didn't pull over, although I did have doubts. So there is still a problem where one person may not be aware that there was contact. I'm pretty sure it was similar with Arvore at Mont Tremblant. It's ironic that we were just talking about this the other day and that side-by-side contact could present a problem. It really wasn't my intention to use this to prove a point but there it is. Sorry.

There's very little to see here actually. I started near the back of the field, lost the draft early on and simply had no chance to catch up again.

- 2:03~2:12 - happens again but at a great distance.

- 2:36~2:45 - Was so board I decided to record Fireshot spinning off the road (behind me)

- 6:24~6:28 - Passed some cars. Ho-hum. LOL Don't watch the rest.

Yes, that's fine in a one-on-one situation, where it's obvious who the "guilty" driver is. However, in a lot of situations it's NOT clear who, if anyone, is really "guilty" - particularly in those multi-car pile-ups. At Misano for instance, if you drove too fast into that first corner you ended up rear-ending someone. If you drove more cautiously you ended up getting rear-ended & pushed into the driver in front. There's no escape!

As a further complication, sometimes it's not possible to tell whether there has been any actual contact or not. And of course, stopping for the innocent driver doesn't help them much if, in the meantime, the rest of the field sweeps past!

Beware, the man with a camera. It's alright. But just be careful about casting too many stones in a glass house. Nearly all of us were guilty in varying degrees. And I can't say much myself (at least not in front of Frawe). I actually had to cut the audio here to keep this G-rated. Ahem, shall we continue.

- 1:14 - Looking back to see...NOBODY! Ahh, last again.

- 1:52~2:02 - I've watched this sequence about 1/2 a dozen times. And all I can say is 🤬 happens. But after this, I think I really lost my enthusiasm to continue and from this point forward, my driving was full of errors and subpar.

- 5:53 - I don't know what was wrong with me. This is the second time I tried to outbrake somebody while I was offline. I should have KNOWN it wasn't going to work. I think frustration was just getting the better of me.

- 6:47 - And this was the 3rd time. <sigh>

Just wake me up when the nightmare is over.

Thanks for bringing that to my attention Jeff: I really appreciate it! Actually, my old eyes can't make out anything from that mushy video - I'm not sure which is my car, but I'll take your word for it, though as you've got the "master copy", & I have a vague recollection of going into that corner with too much ... err... enthusiasm.

I haven't cast asparagus about anyone in particular - clearly we've ALL done it at one time or another. Somehow, in these big grid races mass hysteria sets in & everyone has a tendency to push too hard. However, it's the first corner that's particularly embarrassing - there are quite a few bad ones: Montreal, the new reversed Misano, Monza! - actually, come to think of it, they're all potentially bad! I was very impressed that we all made it through T1 at Mt. Tremblant without anyone going (being forced) off. 👍

In any case, having just completed the Challenge series offline on (supposedly!) LEGEND level, I would have to say that the online racing is a model of skilled, restrained driving in comparison. What the hell happened to Euthechnyx's AI???

Well, you know officer, people were just running wild, going nuts, setting cars on fire, breaking windows. So I figured, what's the harm if I take a few televisions out of the store...who's going to notice.

I have to say, there are certain benefits to taking video. Aside from the fact that watching them is enjoyable and insightful, it certainly puts people's performance, post race, under a huge microscope. And none so much as one's own. If you don't run a clean race yourself, there's no hiding.

I don't want to be the one as Jeff says to"casting too many stones in a glass house."(theres a portuguese expression for that which is very similar) because i know i'm no example of a driver but i think someone as to say it:
-From Mario's video(son director's cut i'm sure) speccialy min. 1;47 and again at 2;55 it is clear that were persons driving with setups in the event(the horrible monstertruck setup jumps to the sight...) and were questioned about that in the chat room(twice by Hairy-Dave and one by mhm66) and the complete silence was the answer(and wasn't alone)...not to mention the continuos agression towards bullie which is outreageous.Again i take the blame from some stupid as hell manouvers that result in prejudice to other drivers(min.5;03 is a good example already shown in Jeff's video(sorry again dude)-i think i'm being video persecutedlol-but continuously bashing in others players car like if they were shifs's A.I its not correct, i think ,and shows one's spirit when joining an event like this...

I think that enough has been said about what went wrong about the event last Sunday. I'd appeal to everyone to please respect your fellow drivers on track (and off obviously), and to stick to fairness on the event which are meant to be enjoyful to everyone. And to be so, its essential that everyone have the same means to race. So, please:

1) Respect any settings limitations that are imposed by the organizer (Arvore's right about drivers with costum setting, although it was several times said by Jeff that they weren't allowed).

2) Take into account while driving the surroundings - track and other cars! It's everyone's obligation to do so.

3) There's something inside everyone's car called... the WHEEL! Use it to avoid contact to other drivers in front of you, specially when chasing someone's end rear at high speed (specially in oval racing). There's another innovation in your car that's called BRAKE - mid-pedal on G25/G27, left pedal on 2-pedal-only-wheels - that can be used to slow down your car. This is quite useful and effective if coordinated with the WHEEL on avoiding crash-mayhem specially entering tight corners.

4) Remember general driving rules: If you hit someone in the rear, then 99,99% of the times IT'S YOUR FAULT and YOU SHOULD AVOID IT. Play safe - brake early and account for early brakers.

5) If you hit someone off-track and gained positioned - be fair and wait to that driver to retake its original position that you took initially unfairly.

6) If you chase someone take advantage of their draft, remember the OBVIOUS! - your speed is higher than usual meaning that YOU HAVE to brake earlier than usual to avoid getting off-track and, worse than that, to crash and destroy someone else's race!

And Misano ... here I have to say I'm sorry for punting SimcoeAce in the confusion that was lap 1. I don't know how, but the truth is I didn't realize (when it happened) you were sent to the sand and, with a bunch of cars all around us, slowing down was very dangerous. Anyway, I should have waited further ahead when it was safe to do so.

- Setups: Yes, I noticed this as well and it kind of annoys me. In fact, I suspected it during the race but here's the problem. Before the first race, I asked everybody in the lobby to select a particular setup LIVERY (edit). This ensured that they were running stock setup. At least, I'm pretty sure it does. From that point on, I allowed people to return to their default livery. However, from there until the end of the race, there was a steady string of people coming and going in the lobby. Some people joined later, some left the lobby and came back. And I was quite frustrated because it wasn't always clear who left. Or why. Obviously voice-coms are not effective at giving commands because there's no guarantee that everybody hears you. With that in mind, I set up a text chat and invited everybody. Some people never joined the text chat however. And trying to figure out who did or didn't was making me batty. Other people in the lobby, hell knows what they were thinking, started to invite other people into this text chat who weren't even racing!!! I don't know if you guys noticed but there was a slew of people in and out of the text chat who weren't actually in the lobby. And I didn't invite them in. So at some point people who I sent invites to join the text chat couldn't because it was full. <sigh> (Running a lobby this size and trying to work the cameras turns one into a full time administrator) Anyway, everybody I invited in, I made a point to mention on the invite 'default setup only please'. But yes, I believe it was ignored by a few and blatantly taken advantage of by another who may have started with default and then changed it. Looking at the raised ride height can be obvious. Adding some negative camber is not so easy to tell but I suspect one person I was racing had just that, and I'll leave it there because I have no proof and it would be wrong to pursue it. As I've said all along, this was only meant as a lag test and not an actual event.

- Smash & Crash: Well, my comments under the Montreal video were said with enough 'tongue in cheek' that my mouth was bleeding. And I have to admit, I was laughing to myself when I was writing it. Granted, I was quite livid on Sunday when it happened. But I just thought it was quite funny to see both bullie and I pushed off at the same time at the same corner. Almost like a tag-team effort. And by none other than someone who specifically mentioned that people need to calm down on the first lap. You see, I have a fond appreciation for irony. So I thought I would exploit this incident and give it a good beating. Obviously there's no malice intended.

@ Biggles. And in fairness, bullie and I had a little contact and were obviously going slower than we otherwise would have. So I can't really blame Biggles and Arvore/ChilledAnt for this incident. But I also wanted to illustrate and really drive the point home, how people need to calm down, especially during the first 1-2 laps. I won't mention names, it's not necessary. But if you look at my videos and Mario's, it's pretty clear there are some drivers who just barged their way through constantly--like a bull in a china shop. During the heat of the moment and surrounded by the red mist, it's not so easy to relax and be patient. We're all guilty of it. And it's a race, one shouldn't really BE patient. But every move and action has consequences and just throwing one's car into a corner has all the appeal of lighting off a stink bomb in a crowded room. So watching these videos is kind of looking into a mirror that nobody wants to see.

Just like Santa Claus, the camera knows if you've been bad or good.

Another one happened at Redwood Park where I was once way too fast in the last U-turn but, at least from my pov, hit nobody.
In Mugello I was ~10s too late for the start and couldn't catch up.
California Speedway Oval was the first race I could win in such an event .

You mean F... I think I even asked him by PM if he used the default setup and he said it would be so 👎. But we don't know if it happened on purpose.

And Misano ... here I have to say I'm sorry for punting SimcoeAce in the confusion that was lap 1. I don't know how, but the truth is I didn't realize (when it happened) you were sent to the sand and, with a bunch of cars all around us, slowing down was very dangerous. Anyway, I should have waited further ahead when it was safe to do so.

Biggles, just so you know, the "sound" Mario makes when he hits you is the Portuguese equivalent of saying "Take That!"

In absolute contrast with the Oval race, here you have the dullest movie of'em all. It's Montreal, and I'm alone in second place almost from start to finish. Anyway, it was filmed so here you have it, maybe you want to check my racing lines, braking points and all my many mistakes. As usual, mhm (apart from a litle off early) did a impecable race and grabbed a(nother) win.

I don't know how, but the truth is I didn't realize (when it happened) you were sent to the sand and, with a bunch of cars all around us, slowing down was very dangerous. Anyway, I should have waited further ahead when it was safe to do so.

I don't remember that incident at all, but it looks like I put two tires into the sand before you hit me anyway & therefore slowed in your path. IMO if the driver in front makes an error & as a result you hit him - it's not your responsibility. It does make you wonder how anyone survives these races IRL though.

It's amusing to see the constant yellow flag!

The only real solution is for everyone to have someone standing next to them with a big hammer - any collision: BANG! That ought to cut down on the punting!
