Most local garages (at least around here) don't know Rotary engines very well, so trusting them with my car is like asking someone to break it.. I actually had a conversation somewhere alone this line: "Hey.. yeah, so you just wanna change.. the piston?".."Uh..no..? You really don't know what this is, do you?" "Its one of them rotary things.. fast and furious.." then I just left..

Monster7, you hit the nail right on the head!

87GrandNational, the 1.3L (1308cc) refers to the most comman Mazda rotary engine, the 13B.
13B = 2 Rotor (any 85+ RX-7, similar in RX-8)
20B = 3 Rotor (not avail. in North America)
26B = 4 Rotor (mazda race only, or rare custom)
An RX-7 would definitley move with the swap you speak of. A bunch of guys have done it (i would never, it's sacreligious to me!) with great success, and there is even a specific forum at www.rx7club.com dedicated to other engine swaps (mainly V8s discussed)

"Horsepower sells cars but torque wins races" (or similar statements) are increadibly false. If you have 10 minutes to spare, read this article to get an amazing explaination why - it's THE definitive source on this highly debated topic.

XzifT, I know what you mean about garages in the blue - almost all are! Even the ones that specialise in rotaries cannot be trusted sometimes to do quality work. Many enthusiasts swear AGAINST ever, ever, ever taking your rotary to a Mazda dealer for reapairs as well.

Above I stated the 787B produced 620 ft-lbs of torque, but I was mistaken - it actually produces 448 ft-lbs.

The 787B engine was normally aspired, NO turbochargers.
It MAKES (the engine still hasn't been rebuilt since the race!) 700 hp @ 9000 rpm and 620 ft-lbs of torque @ 6500 rpm. it also uses variable length intake runners, which lengthen at lower RPMS to provide a broader powerband at the expense of slightly lower overall HP number.

what the hell no turbos? i'm guessing this is the beast

in Gran Turismo 3 it says the 787b is turbo charged? I have been tricked! all this time!

Nope, definitely 4-rotor (13B x 2.... 1308cc x 2)
Yes, that's the engine I6-4-eva, you can see the simple yet effective variable length intake runners in the pic well.
Gran Turismo video games are not the most accurate source for car specifications ;) (but I can't wait to play GT4 on my Xbox!!!)
