Screen Display: Simple & Map Display: Off

It seems like there are a lot of "hardcore" players here at GTP (people getting all golds in licenses, talking about how they'd never use B-spec, never use TCS/ASM, manual transmission or die, etc.), just wondering how many of you have it setup to show only the simple display without the map.

I've never seen/followed any real life motorsports, only played Gran Turismo 2, 3, and 4, but I'm guessing that in reality drivers don't have a map with dots showing other cars nor do they have little blinking lights telling them what gear they should be in on each turn of every course. I'm also guessing they don't have a visual showing their best lap time and the last lap time. Please correct me if I'm wrong about these guesses.

So I turned them both off for the realism, but then also to improve my driving. I couldn't believe how vulnerable I felt initially after disabling the red blinky, not knowing exactly how I should go around turns even on courses I thought I knew well. But now I feel truly confident about many tracks and their corners. And not having the map or lap times, current lap number, etc. in view all the time is actually a blessing. There's much less distraction, I just get to focus and enjoy the driving ahead of me.
 
Sounds like a cool way to play. I doubt I can do it on all of the tracks, but I might give it a try on some of the tracks I know pretty well.

There are shift lights that give you an indication of when to shift, I've never heard of a downshift light though. Also, many race cars have split timers in their cars so they can gauge their pace.

I agree. I turned both off last night after a frustrating track meet where an incorrect gear recommendation nearly put me off the track, and then a '4..........3.2' fake-out turned my Viper into a very expensive lawnmower. After the first couple cautious laps I found myself more aware of my position on the track and forced to use the trackside corner markers. I suspect once I get used to it, I won't miss the map & blinker at all. I'm glad we have the choice to turn it off! 👍
 
Well I'm more hardcore than the rest of you. I put a blanket over the screen and just go by sound and the vibrations from my controller. I get gold on everything, never use B-spec and have a billion credits in the bank. Oh, I also have the F1 in day-glow green (a super special secret car that can only be unlocked if you are a genius like me)

I'll just park a 787B in front of my plasma and hook up the steering to the PS2!
 
Judge, you are extreme hardcore!! That bit cracked me up.

Now for what i was really gonna post.... I have been playing since GT2, and I have always wondered what the blinking red number by the tach was. I just found out like a week ago it was a suggested gear. I feel pretty retarded since apparently everyone else knew about it. Conversely, I am proud that i never used its suggestions and still do very well.
 
Come on guys, nobody is able to win a race in a track that havent race it before.
Its normal to use the map if you are racing a new track. In real life you "practice" on those new tracks, and before you put your a** in the car you use a map to analise the race line.Also you are able to know where you are in relation to the other drivers, and the time between all the drivers, and shift light ,never use, just the sound.But.........Its an awesome idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Turn off all that cra* in your screen, turn off the TC and the stability controller and put some economic wheels to your car and bring it on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 
considering you don't have peripheral vision in the game, and you have to suffer crappy tv resolution instead of perfect eyesight resolution, so you can't see the track and your surroudings so well, i think the map is a good substitute for these things

the braking indicator in gt4 annoys me with its sequential shifting technique, if you don't know a track or a corner is deceptively tight, there's a BIG difference between braking at the top of 3rd to slow down, and braking in 3rd to slow down to 2nd. i use it to learn the track and try and remember the shift points myself

i race with asm/tcs off because it's more realistic, because i expect the car to spin the wheels and get a bit sideways under certain conditions, that's how i drive. it totally messes me up to be getting a bit broad for a purpose and the car settles itself back straight, i can't drive properly with ASM on
 
I am a 'hardcore' driver too, never use aids, mtx or die, and especially the screen options, i have map off, g-guage off, gear suggestor off, music off, for hte pure driving experience.
 
Everything i could turn off, I did. The map, the splits, the blinking red shift number...music has always been off since GT2 (though I like it in the replays in GT4 and to be able to turn it on/off at will, my NTSC-J version has some good music)...

I'm so happy that in GT4 we can finally turn off all that useless screen clutter.
 
Tried this last night. Turned off the map, gear change indicator, splits.
I like it!!
Racing takes on a whole new dynamic when you only know who is in front or rear of you only by seeing them out of the windscreen or in the rear view mirror. And by the sounds.
 
I tried this out last night. Woof! On some parts of courses I knew well (say, Tsakuba), I was really in-tune with the racing, and just having a blast.

On tracks I didn't know so well, like Opera, it was painful.

How true-to-life!
 
I've had the map off since the day the game was laid to rest inside my PS2 and I've had no problems getting around all the new tracks!

I do have the 'gear indicator on though, just like in real life race cars...well, to an extent that is!

Now, if someone could just tell me if it's possible to get rid of the REAR VIEW MIRROW...I'd be good to go!

I don't understand why PD/Sony put it there permanately but then turn around and let you assign a button via the options so you can get a good clean look BEHIND YOU! :D!...almost as if your rear window becomes your front window! Go figure!

Oh well!
