I think I may have encountered a strange and rare glitch here. Whenever I play GT5P and quits to the XMB, the screen turns darker. This doesn't happen with any other games. I've tried disconnecting and reconnecting the AV cable, even trying my other TV, but the problem persists. When I load up another game after quiting GT5P, the screen also stays darker. The only solution is to switch off the PS3 completely and turn it on again.

Have anybody experienced this? It's quite annoying to say the least.

Thats certainly strange, i would first think it may be the TV though, what brand and type of TV do you have? Such as a Sony LCD, or Panasonic Plasma? I have a feeling it may be the 'Dynamic Contrast' control on your TV, if its not, I wouldn't have a clue whats going on, I've never experienced anything like that.

I don't think it's the TV, I tried it on 3 different TVs and the screen turns dark on all of them. Also, I only started experiencing this glitch around a month ago, when I already had GT5P for about 6 months. I didn't change any settings on my TV for those 6 months. The TV I usually use is Soniq LCD (cheap brand, but pretty good), to a lesser extent I use Sharp LCD and LG Plasma. And there's no 'Dynamic Contrast' option, so it can't be that causing the problem.

I hope it's not a sign of my PS3 dying :nervous:.

it is a dynamic contrast problem. it happened to me aswell. if you look on your remote you may see a button that changes the viewing modes (eg movie, game, scenery). if you change that to normal, you should be fine.

Dynamic contrast is often called 'Contrast Enhancer' or Advanced Contrast enhancer, or something to that effect.

My TV doesn't have fancy settings, so I'm 100% sure nothing like that is activated. To further back this up, I've never changed the settings on my TV ever since I got GT5P. The glitch itself only started showing up about a month ago. Spooky this one...

Sounds like a backlight issue you have with a laptop when the inverter packs in but only it's with a PS3??? I'd get in touch with Sony as this is a new one for sure

Have you tried a different HDMI or VGA or S-Video cable ( whichever one you use! ) incase the one you have is not connecting properly?

GL with it 👍

I use the standard cable that comes with the PS3 (the yellow-white-red one, forgot the name). I checked the conection as well, it isn't faulty in any way. If it is, other games would also have the same problem, but I'm only getting this glitch with GT5P. I'll post up a before & after pic later so you guys can see the differences clearly.

Thanks 👍. I'm not overly fussed with it, as it doesn't affect gameplay in any way. Just worried whether the problem is with my PS3 or GT5P disc (I hope it's the latter).

If you can only replicate the process with GT5P, and not with other games, then it isn't likely to be the PS3. Can you get hold of another GT5:P disc and try that?

Tbh, that sounds like a bug from the PS3 system software.
Have you tried changing the screen saver settings? Because this sounds like its the screen saver.

I have the latest PS3 software already. Besides, If it's due to the software, wouldn't everyone be getting the same problem?

mine always has gotten darker, I presume you're talking when you press the PS button?

No, it's not when I press the PS button to go to the XMB mid-game. It's after I quit the game completely. The XMB is darker compared to the XMB before I played the game.

I snapped two pictures to show the difference. Doesn't turn out too clear (crappy cell phone camera :banghead:), but if you look closely, especially at the areas I circled, you can see the difference in brightness.

Before GT5P - Bright

After GT5P - Dark

I can't think of a worse way to connect a PS3 to a TV. Is there any other connection available on your TV?

Yeah, seriously, what's the point of even using an LCD or plasma with 480i cables? But if you push the PS button with the game still on, the screen should be darker, at least, that's what my original 80G (burned in house fire) and my new 80G both do.

have you tried a different wire? but as you said that thisproblem is only with this game, have you tried another cd?

No, I haven't tried another CD. I'll try to get hold of one and see what happens.

It is pretty bad, but I have no choice. The TV that I usually use has no HD support, and it's only 17 inch (my room is pretty small, only 3x3 metres), so even if it has HD it won't make that much difference. Ridiculous as it may sound, I'm pretty happy with my current setup. Probably because I endured 6 years with the PS1 and never owned a PS2, so the jump in graphics to a PS3 is still pretty impressive.

My other two TV has HD connection, and is much bigger, but it's in my other house. I only go there during holidays (few weeks per year), so I can't justify spending the cash to buy HDMI cable when I'm not going to use it so much. I may have a rethink when GT5 comes out though :D.

See a few posts above this.
