I sure the hell did. Really added to the drama (though I wonder if it didn't distract Enge and Papis a bit during their battle).

I'd caution against counting out the Corvettes yet. It's extremely likely Max would've had Enge if the race had lasted a few more laps, thanks to his stronger tires. Also, not every ALMS race lasts into the night like Sebring and Le Mans; whereas here the cool night air helped keep the Pirelli tires intact a bit longer, that sort of assistance simply wouldn't be there during broad daylight races.

Did you see the fireworks light up the sky through the windshield of the Corvette? What a sight that was!
my heart was pounding the entire time and the fireworks was spectacular!

BTW, here's some sheer irony for you: at Both the 24 hours of Daytona and the 12 hours of Sebring, the #2 cars won, with both teams having drivers that will not race full season, while the #1 cars dropped out. how more ironic can you get?

Hmm... good point.

Also, both races are in Florida and both are season openers
Well, they're both in Florida because the weather is so damn nice there at this time of year.

It's usually fine here in SoCal too, but not lately. And, no decent place to race, except in NorCal, and maybe Fontana. But, Fontana? No. Plus, NorCal climate is cold and rainy, so NorCal is out too.

The video shot of fireworks through the front windscreen at the end of the race was awesome. 👍

also, winner in those two races were open wheel drivers (Dan Wheldon and Scott Dixon winning the Daytona 24 and Sabastian Bourdais winning the Sebring 12).

You know GTPlanet... I may have a brand-new motorsports hero. Tom Kristensen has to be a new hero of mine. He won his seventh Le Mans in nine tries last year, then he won with the turbo diesel Audi R10. I normally got tired of Audi winning all the time, but it's more of a "friendly" hate.

And now, it's time I do my thing and uh... sound off.

JOHN SOUNDS OFF! - AUDI'S DIESEL VICTORY

An E-mailer on Speed Channel show "WindTunnel With Dave Despain" stated that hardly anyone mentioned Audi's Diesel victory. It's the first in a major motorsport, and it doesn't make news. First thing you'll likely ask me is, "what's up with that?" Or as I term it- whazzupwithdat? I'll tell you what's up. Not many people follow racing since the American sports media is mostly over March Madness (I am too, but even I took a break between College Basketball and motorsports). Sometimes people will mention sportscar racing. Note that the only racing I mostly see covered on local sports programs are NASCAR and Indy Racing. Even if you don't care about sportscar racing, at least give people some respect, especially sportscar racing. This is sort of a situation from last year in which I seen the best race of the weekend while another less important race gets 20% maybe 40% more publicity. Can you recall what that was last year? Correct! Le Mans on Saturday-Sunday, then the F1 GP of America. This time around, it's the 12 Hours of Sebring and then NASCAR's washout of the Nextel Cup event in Atlanta the next day. I'm proud of Audi's acheivements this past Saturday. I wished I could have seen more of the race had my parents not take me out around town. With this win, Le Mans is likely their next stop. Could you imagine if Audi's turbo diesel won the June classic? Audi would just add more Hall of Fame status in sportscar racing. Also, credit Tom Kristensen for riding the winning car to the line. Again, he may just be my newest motorsports hero. If no one gives Audi's diesel power any respect or publicity, then that's why we have GTPlanet and other racing-focused message boards and news deals. We've always been sort of odd man out, or "the little people" so to speak. Of course, I still think Audi's win at Sebring with diesel power (I think turbo diesel power to be exact) is a great acheivement. It would be much better news to get across than NASCAR's Atlanta event getting washed out. Doing it like this basically makes the Sebring win insignificant in racing news in America. Yeah, Audi won. But look what they did, winning with diesel power - something that hasn't been done in most major motorsports in America (or the world, maybe?). Even if you don't like racing or don't consider racing a sport, give the God-forsaken Audi R10 some respect! I know March Madness is the key story here in American sports (which I am covering in the Basketball Forums), but motorsports is almost always first to me before ANYTHING. So do me a favor... GIVE THE AUDI R10 IT'S G..DAMNED DUES!" You freaking dig me, GTP?

(clears throat) Carry on discussion, ladies and gentlemen. I'll go with other tidbits and comments about this race in future posts.

Man! Best Sebring I've been to! That was absolutely fantastic racing. It came right down to the end in GT2, for third in GT1, P2 was exciting (GREAT to see Intersport beat the Penske Porsches!!!) and in P1 I loved watching Dindo, Tom, and McNish kick the crap out of everyone especially that m----- f----- Emanuelle Pirro, god I hate him! But I digress, fantastic stuff and I feel this year will be one of ALMS's best in their short history.

P.S. Pirelli's worked wonderfully! I was surprised... last year Maserati and Panoz suffered because of it. Which, for me, begs the question, how much does the Factory Aston's being on Pirelli's affect the other Pirelli cars. I heard over the P.A. system relatively early on (after Gunnar Jeanette's first stint, they interviewed him) that Panoz was really feeling the trickle down affect. Apparently Pirelli stepped up their North American program. I would say it's about time! They have been one of the title sponsors of Panoz owned tracks for years now and have never been successful. I love their success because it makes the series THAT MUCH BETTER!!! Again what are the general publics thoughts on the above?

M------ F------ Emanuelle Pirro, god I hate him! whoa dude, whats with all the hate?

My dad is friends with Rinaldo "Dindo" Cappello, and apparently stupid Manu Pirro is a jackass. Just hate forced upon me through the grape vine. LOL

m.piedgros

Did he do something some time ago to piss you off?

Not to me. I've had only a few brief discussions with the man. My Dad and Rinaldo "Dindo" Cappello on the other hand have been jerked around by this guy on more than one ocasion. Ask any of his other team mates, i.e. Tom Kristiensen, Frank Biela, J.J. Lhetto, Marco Werner and many more. (Not so much Alan McNish) He doesn't play as a team so much and never even tries to seem like he is interested in doing Audi PR stuff. Anywho, I guess I went overboard in the heat of the moment.

Couldn't agree more. I happened to be at the event so I can personally tell you it was THE BEST I've seen in my 12 Hours experience and probably one of the best in the history of racing. Good fun all 'round. As for Joest-Audi's next stop, indeed it is Le Mans, the R10 gets a break from U.S. races (and the R8 gets to get beat by Porsche's RS Spyder) untill Le Mans. Following Le Mans however, the R10 is back and this just in Audi might be making the R10 available to customers (Champion, Audi Sport UK, Team GOH.) I believe that is all I got in response to your post John.

P.S. Longhorns kicks ass.

he sure didn't look like he would do such thing, but judging by this description of him, he seems like he is only using people for money and to be on T.V. a "Gold Digger" if you will. I sure would be interested to know what the other driver's are like. BTW, I think this is overdue(and if I already said, nevermind it), but welcome to GTP, fellow Texan:tup:

That makes it TWO guys from Dallas now... and then this Houston native (me). Texas is on the rise on this site... ;)

Women seem to be coming on strong now. First we have the Wisconsin beauty Danica Patrick, the British sensation Katherine Legge, Erica Anders in NHRA (among two other women who made it to the Finals in the latest round of NHRA competition)... now add Liz Halliday with her win in P2. Liz Haillday can only go in one direction- up, up, and away. She's probably the best female P2 racer since Venezuela native Milka Duno. Good job to the Intersport team in P2.

In GT1, the usual suspects won again, the Corvette C6R. The Corvette boys revenge from last year when Aston Martin upset the Corvettes at Sebring. Could Aston Martin do what they didn't do last year's Le Mans- beat Corvette? We'll see in June should Aston Martin advance.

Speaking of upsets, how about the Panoz GTLM? It edged out the Porsches and the beautiful Ferrari F430 raced by Houston-based Risi Competizione. The Panoz GTLM may have a LONG way to go in surpassing Porsche in sportscar racing, but it proved just enough in 12 hours of hard racing at Sebring.

I still take away the fact that Tom Kristensen may be my newest motorsports hero. This man has outright won Le Mans 7 out 9 times. He surpassed Jacky Ickx and such for most outright Le Mans wins. You win in class at Le Mans and you're a hero. Win outright at Le Mans and you're a champion. Win outright at Le Mans several times and you're damn near legendary. Someone has to be absolutely perfect to have a chance at overall wins and have a better winning percentage to surpass Tom Kristensen. He is an amazing racer, no question. If he isn't a hall of fame racer yet, he should be.

Speaking of Panoz, Don Panoz had one hell of a good weekend, first he is inducted into the hall of fame at Sebring and then his brand wins a legendary race on a track owned by him. how the hell can you be anymore luckier then that?

BTW, Off-Topic: does anyone besides me think that these two look alike?

Don Panoz's Hall of Fame induction was well-deserved. His company probably built the one of the best, most underrated, not really known car- the Panoz Esperante. My best memories of Panoz in racing have to involve the GT1 counterpart of the Panoz Esperante raced in the mid-1990s and up to 1998. Some even called the Esperante GT1 the "Batmobile." Australian commentator (and one of my favorite commentators) Leigh Diffey proficiently pronounced it as "Batman-mobile." Maybe I'm one of the few people who think Panoz should have another shot at the LMP ranks. They produced something unique- a front-engined LMP race car. Front-engined cars give you that extra "oomph" in handling. And if that's true, then the LMP Roadsters gave you as much "oomph" as you wanted from your car.

And if they don't want to do P1, P2 is a nice field to get back into the Prototype ranks. P2 seems to be on the rise with names like Porsche and Mazda who stepped up. I think Peugeot is likely to hit the prototype ranks with Diesel power. It is about five years now since P2 was added. People wanted it dead, but it has been a wonderful package that can only get better.

"Big ups" for Texas, yo. Thanks for the nice welcome. As for the similarity. I can see where you see it. That's kinda funny.

m.piedgros

Panoz auto company have excellent resources to enter either P1 or 2. I'd like to see 'em go into both. As great as I felt the 12hr was I think we could beef up the prototype classes (and GT1) classes. Not with WR Peugots like in the early 2000's but with serious competitors like Zyteks, Courage Peugots, Panoz LMP1's and 2's? Seriously, what do you think the chances are? JML aren't doing anything now that Multimatic is in 100% control of the GTLM project... 👍 anywho. That is about all I got. Windtunnel is nearly on so I'm gonna head out now.

m.piedgros

P.S. Now I'm depressed that Texas couldn't go double championships this year :(
