Second Life - so, what's it like?

second_life_270605.jpg

Right, after searching the forums I haven't discovered much on this "game". I've read up on it on wiki, watched a few videos on youtube, and generally done a bit of research into it. On this forum, naturally, it seems to be being overshadowed by PS3 Home, which from what I've seen is very similar, only slightly less commercially-orientated and much slicker in terms of graphics and the interface.

What I would like to know is whether anyone here uses it? I'm giving considerations towards downloading it and having a faff about, for no other reason than general intrigue. My gf is doing a project soon on it where herself and a small group of other people will actually be writing and conducting a performance with Second Life avatars (in return they're all being given a bunch of shopping vouchers), presumably as a kind of commercial excercise, seeing whether that sort of thing is viable.

I've heard various positives and negatives from my reading about so far - positives including it seems to be very much a "creative" environment where people show off photos, virtual architecture and so on, and generally have a kind of virtual "shop" to show off your wares, whatever they may be, and along the negative lines it seems to be quite "slow" (from the vids I've seen), fairly geeky, and basically full of the sort of stuff the internet is normally full of - irritating kids, bad spelling and grammar, racism, idiots, and porn.

If I do download, I'm probably not going to be spending a great deal of time with it (given that I have no free time as it is) but I'm just intrigued as to what it's like. I've never used a MMORPG before so again, experiences along those lines welcome.

So anyone here, feel free to share your experiences and opinions on it.

Although I don't play it personally, I have heard plenty of stories about people becoming addicted to MMORPG, seeing as this is your first game, just keep in check that you are not spending rediculous amounts of hours on it. (Considering you have mentioned you don't have much free time to begin with, this shouldn't be a problem in the first place.)

Just an update - I downloaded SL earlier on this evening and have been having a little play for an hour or so.

Put simply, I think it's a bit of a waste of my time. It seems like to get anything out of it you need to put a lot in (not that this isn't true of life in general, but this isn't "life" in the true sense of the word) and the world is just... well, broken. I know everything loads in real time and it would probably be okay with a quick computer and net connection, but it's still pretty basic. Have to say I'm looking forward to PSN Home much more.

Don't really think I'll be spending any more time on SL. Not really my cup of tea at all.

My university next year is trialing running lectures and classes in Second Life.

I'm not even joking.

now that has high possibilities of epic, hilarious failure.. 💡

Actually that's what 2nd life was created for when it first came out, it was used by a university professor to communicate with his students

Doesn't surprise me. I suppose if you've got a particular goal or use for SL it isn't too bad. As I mentioned, my gf is putting together some play on it as part of some company trialing the idea. But as someone coming into the game with no real reason for using it... it's possible to see it for what it is - very crudely constructed, hard to navigate, and full of freaks.

just let us know the place and time and I can arrange griefers there, if you don't feel like having a class..
