Sega GT 2002 vs. GT

I was reading an article about the Sega GT 2k2 for the Xbox and it had some pretty intersting features.

Aside from the obvious, car damage, the cost of repair to car damage incured in a race was deducted from the prize purse. Also one had to often overhaul the car's engine and added parts from time to time (which also cost money) and buy new sets of tires when the owned ones were old or overused in addition to changing the motor oil.

Basically the cost of maintaince (sp? i'm in a hurry) was the thing. And the higher class your car, the more expensive it is to maintain (can you imagine the cost of maintaining a car like the ZZII or Aston Martin Vanquish or a Viper for all you Viper freaks?). It would also put an end to 50 to 75 car garages that most of own. Imagine maintaining 62 cars that ranged in cost from F1s to Minis.

When you think about it, this really changes things in these types of games. Your more liable to take a longer and harder look at car when buying one. While the NSX is a very well handling car, is it really worth buying a $90,000 car that can barely out perform a Corvette Z06 (which is little more than half that of the NSX)? Which in respect to other sports cars is a bargain. Imagine if Ferrari really was in GT, would even buy it if you had to maintain a $150,000 360 Modena?

In the article, the writer, went on to say that in all respects Sega GT 2002 was better than average racing game and driving dynamics were close to on par with that of GT3 The only problem was, however, there were a lack of tracks, 8 total if memory is correct.

thoughts?

sounds like a great game, i saw this on a site but there was no info on it. maintanence sounds like an amazing concept the prize money would need 2 be pretty high to get me through a race. does ne one no a rough release date for this.

Hey, look at the two letter's in the game's title, "GT", it's obviously copying the GT series except for the aspects of the game that you covered.;) Just giving you my two cents.

Here's something you probably didn't know, when your playing Classic or whatever its called, the race starts out in black/white and then slowly fades into color. Thats pretty cool if you ask me.:D

Actually there both "Gran Turismo", the difference is the Sega added thier name to distingush itself and a different type of development procedures. Not like the "GT"-only from Polyphony Digital

Sorry I've got to be sceptical here and Say sega's :gt: will not be half as impressive as Sony/Polyphony's...

But that's my opinion, good luck if you decide to buy it :D

I have Sega GT 2002 (came with the XBox) and I have to say, I am quite impressed. All the little extras make it a much more enjoyable game.

Though GT3 does have higher quality visuals, more realistic drive, and MUCH better audio.

Interestingly enough, my mom called asking what she should get my son for Christmas. I told here to get me *cough* I mean him SEGA GT2002, so unfortunately we will have to wait until then to see what it's like, but traditionally, SEGA has historically provided some of the best racing games out there..., aside from GT3 of course.

It'll be interesting to see how it matches up :D.. Like will the steering by lighter as in TOCA3? Will the brakes lock up :spin:

Bought Sega GT 2002 the other day ... only playing it on the XBox controller, but heres my thoughts.

The biggest upside of Sega GT 2002 are the whupass cars, we're talking OLD cars here, lots of the faves from GT2 .. I wont spoil it for anyone but suffice to say there are some real classics in there like the old RX-7, KPGC-10 Skyline, Leven TE27 (I think thats the number) etc

The physics are quite soft, and its clearly biased towards fun over realism, while it is pretty realistic, drifts are too easy to hold and the weight transfer effects are questionable.

The sound is pretty poor, tyre squeals dont sound quite right but more significantly no change when you put on tuning parts etc, however an upside is that you do get nitrous a little later in the game :D Overall the basic engines sound fairly good, but its not upto GT3 or GTC.

As an overall experience it doesnt compare to GT3, in my opinion. GT3 is all supreme in its feel and its emotion, Sega GT is a one night stand, its great fun, but dont take it too seriously! GT3 is a marriage, you learn to love its upside and live with the downs. If you find too many downs in Sega GT, you'd divource it. GT3, you live with it.

Cheers,

Dan

This is interesting. I always wondered how the GT series would fare if you had to perform maintenece, repairs, race entry fees,etc...the game would literally last years. Which isn't exactly a bad thing for us gearheads.

But software developers would rather have you on the next thing if possible. They failed in their mission...I'm still playing GT2!

Cost of maintenance ?? It's already sad enough that we must deal with that in real life !!

I want to be able to drive all the cars in the game, whenever I have that little bit of time to play.

Sounds like some guys have nothing to do but spend their life to GT.

Ah, I think this seals the deal. I'm getting the Xbox pack for christmas (three games, dvd, and console @ 450 dollars AU) :D

To summarize:

Yes, I would buy Aston Martins, Vipers, and 60 other cars and keep them in my garage.

Would I use all of them for real races?
No, but I'd have most of them for multiplayer competitions
