My computer's been acting up the last ..few weeks or so
I have NOT installed new programs, nor hardware onto my computer. Yet, the error that comes up is a device driver conflict. The shutting off only happens when a) I'm playing a video file, or b) when I'm playing a game.

Does anyone know why this happens? I didn't install any new software.. nor hardware.. and the problem is seriously getting on my nerves.

Ohh.. One other problem I forgot to mention.

After the computer shuts itself off, it takes 3 attempts to get the computer back 'on' (on as in actually back into windows)

The first attempt is entire power off(button at the back of the computer), wait, power on, push power button, and then it turns itself off in 3, 4 seconds.

The second attempt is more successful, it goes into my bios and tells me that my clock speed wasn't right or something (when the computer crashed: only problem is, I never messed with the clock settings). Without modifications to the bios, I exit it, and the computer shuts down again.

THe third attempt, it goes back into the bios, same thing as the second attempt, but this time, it succesfully makes it though all the checks and heads into loading Windows.

Isn't lsass.exe a perfectly normal Windows service? I don't see how that could be the problem.

Yes, but the Sasser virus takes over lsass.exe and does some crazy things.
That doesn't mean that he has Sasser though. I thought I had Sasser, but I didn't.

Just in case, HRD, you might want to head on over to www.sarc.com and try the Sasser removal tool.

Does it say the PC will shut down in 60 seconds or does it just go off?

The computer itself just turns off.

Say I'm watching the Drift Bible on PC. Sometimes, without warning, boom! (boom as in the computer would turn itself off)

And I just went to the sarc page. No viruses found! And.. for some reason, I think the problem is just temporary, because I played a game for about 2 hours straight and nothing happened to my computer... o.O

That would indicate it's not a virus. All the viruses I've heard of that shut your PC down give you the 60 second warning.

It could be overheating, but if you play a game for 2 hours with no problems, then it's not that.

Have you opened the case to check that everything is connected properly?

EDIT: Are you on XP?

Yes, I'm on XP.

I've never had this problem before, and no hardware/software was added/removed. It can't be the hardware because I haven't opened the case up in ages... everything should be snug and tightly connected. The computer started crashing without me doing anything.. That's why I'm so angry. I don't know what's wrong with it!

Try this.

Go My Computer ( on desktop ) > RT click and choose properties > choose the Advanced Tab > select settings under Startup and Recovery > uncheck Automatic Restart under System Failure.

That may stop it from restarting.

Then why is it on default?

When the system 'fails', what should happen?
(As in.. what should happen after I turn automatic restart off)
(keyword, should)

**Sorry, this users limit of knowledge has been reached. Please try again later

I just remembered that I had to do that at one point. It's actually ticked on my system ATM.

So you say the computer just turns off. No warning or nothing. That was happening with my old computer. The problem resided in my PSU being screwed...

daan, I think overheating is the cause now.

Sure, I might use the computer for extended times, but after long (~ 4 hrs of doing things) it will turn itself off.
If I try to turn it right back on, it will turn off in 2 seconds.

However, there has been a time where I didn't restart it right away. I waited for ~ 10 minutes, and when I restart it, the computer starts up fine.

If the problem is only overheating, what should I do? Get new fans?

Well, the PSU in my current computer came with the case. Is there a reliability issue with factory PSUs from their cases?

I've had this computer for nearly a year now if you wanted to know.

Well, PSUs can fail anytime. If you bought a no-name PSU, don't expect it to last long.

OK. The bloody thing is really started to frickin' piss me off now.

I tried scanning for Viruses --> McAfee said it had a critical error.
I tried using Ad-Aware --> Computer died.
I even just tried to empty my Temporary Internet Files. It was scanning, and when it got to registry, my computer died.

Can something inside my registry be making my computer die?
