Sending messages to other racers

before and, more importantly at the end of races I see messages often posted @ individual racers, but I can't work out how to do this. I tried the manual, but it didn't tell me.
Can someone please explain, in full detail to a simpleton like me, how to message other racers.

Open start chat , scroll to bottom beneath list of common expressions and there you will find a list of players within current lobby. Click on the name of any players you would like to address. Go ahead and type your sentiments. I hope this is helpful for you.

The @ symbol is just a code to change the text color. You can simply type @DaisyDuck to confuse everyone.
