Don't really get what this is all about. I know they show up on your profile page but what's the point in setting them to online when you then can't use them in events. Same goes for setting drivers to 'online'. Am I missing something with these?

If the idea is to show of which cars you've got then surely you'd want to put your best up there, no? But those best cars are also the ones you want to use in events so what's the purpose of having to keep changing from online to offline and back?

Yeah its kinda odd. especialy since there is no livery editor. so everyone is just looking at the same cars.

I Dont know if you already know it, but you can use your own cars in online races, if you put them as favorites.

I think you share them with your friend list! You put a car in the onlinegarage and I (when I am in your friend list) can use it. Like a rant.
I don´t know for sure but thats what I heard.

Yeah i thought this may have been the only logical reason but i tried to use my friends cars / drivers to test it to no avail....

So at this point to me it also seems pointless

Might be one of the dozens of other little things that seemed to have bigger plans and just got left out.

It's for B-Spec Remote Racing when it goes live.

Racing Your "My Driver"s Between Friends for Experience

Making Your Driver Public

Set your "My Driver" to "Share with Friends" to enable that driver to compete with the "My Driver" of your friends on PlayStation®Network (PSN) in a Remote Race.

Hosting Remote Races

Select the "My Drivers" of you and your friends that are set public, then choose your cars. Once a race set is created the race will begin automatically. This is called "Remote Racing".

After completion of the race, all "My Drivers" that participated in the remote race will gain experience. You can race your "My Drivers" against your friend's drivers in this way to gain experience.

*The service for remote race is planned to start from December 2010.
* To host a remote race, it is necessary to sign into the PlayStation®Network.

Gran Turismo Anywhere - Host races even when away from home

Remote races can be started from the official website gran-turismo.com, and you can even check the progress and results of the race.

Whilst on the move or away from home, you can check race results, and even set and start new remote races. A whole new way to enjoy "Gran Turismo" is here.

*This feature enables the remote operation of "Gran Turismo 5" from a web browser, and requires "Gran Turismo 5" to be running on the "PlayStation 3" displaying the remote race screen.
*Also, although it is possible to check race progress and results by text, you cannot see the live race images during the race from a web browser.

Thanks for that info Neal !!

Had heard about remote racing but never even thought or read about that !

Interesting, thanks Neal.

So the cars that you set to online are the ones that can be used by your online B-Spec driver? And there is no other purpose to setting drivers or cars to online?

Shame that you have to have your PS3 on for it to work. Who really leaves there PS3 on all day when they go to work?

As far as I know this is the only purpose for setting them online, in fact if you set a B-spec driver to online you can't use them for your off line B-spec career.

That was a bit disappointing for me too. Obviously it's not an issue if you're doing remote racing through your PS3 but it's not ideal if you're doing it through a web browser elsewhere...ok we'd all be doing it in work :D

If only the hosts PS3 needs to be on it's then it's workable but if your PSN friends PS3's also need to be on then that's a deal breaker, it's isn't completely clear so far. It's also not clear if remote racing is just for XP or if you can also earn credits.

still not sure how this will work, B-Spec Bob needs babysitting constantly for speedups and overtakes, im not sure a timing screen or even a map with arrows on it is enough to be able to see when to do this properly.

You won't be able to give instructions to your B-spec driver in Remote Racing. Also reading this again now I actually have GT5 confirms to me that as remote racing is though the community tab it won't be for progressing your B-spec career or gain credits, just gaining experience.

"Rent" AI Drivers to Others, to Gain Experience

There is also a special mode in the Community, called "Remote Racing". In remote racing, when the AI driver and car set public by you and your friend are selected, an event race will start automatically.

This means that the AI driver that you set public might participate in a remote race of your friend, and come back with experience before you even know it.

You can watch the races that you host, but you will not be able to give commands like you can in the standard B-spec mode. This is to keep the matches with the AI driver you borrowed from your friends fair.
