I've found that by tweaking the gear ratios a bit, I can get a better performance.  My only problem is that I don't know what I'm doing.  :cheeburga:

I stumbled upon some pretty good settings for my Celica GTFour just by messing around with the Auto Setting and then tweaking 5th and 6th by 3-4 clicks.  It gave me more power in gears 1-4 and allowed for higher speeds in 5th and 6th.

All I want to know is:

Where can go to find learn about these settings?!?!?!?!

The more u push your cars gear ratio to the right on the maual settings the more horesepower u get in each gear expecially the final gear. However, the more u push to the right the slower u excelerate. If u move it to the left, the faster you excelerate but the slower the maximum horsepower u achieve.

Actually, the right is faster acceleration, lower top speed and the left is slower acceleration, higher top speed, just make sure you don't erase any gears in the gear graph or you'll end up decelerating at higher gears.

In the american version, the terminology is sports and wide  The sport they are reffering to is drag racing, Wide refers to the mock dyno graph they show you.  The Y axis on the graph is engine RPM, the X is Wheel speed.  The farther you go in the X direction, the faster you go.  Your car needs to have the power to push your car that fast though.

Sorry if this is too elementary, but here goes.

To really get maximum performance, you need to dork with each gear for each race.  This is too time consuming, so the put in the auto settings.  If you are in a race with lost of straights (test, speedway, tokyo, or MAYBE grand valley)  widen it out a little bit.  You wont be bouncing off the fuel cutoff, and you can shave a couple seconds off your time.  In twisty nasty races (read: cote d'azure, my nemesis) shorten it a lot, because you wont have time to get going that fast, so you basically are working harder to go slower.

In theory (my theory) you should bounce off the fuel cut-off at the end of the longest straightaway in the race.   This isnt easy sometimes.  If you really need to go faster than the auto setting will let you, slide your final drive gear left to drop the ratio a bit.

I would just use the auto setting if I were you. A lot of people here try and make fun of people that do, but hey, I don't have the luxury of sitting here all day and spending an extra 5 minutes on every single race to tweak the gear ratios. I bought the game to race, not to be exact on every gear. I try to concentrate more on sliding the car and dirty driving.

I remember this one time I was fighting for 1st place against a Dodge Viper GTS. Me and him are really close, but a wall is coming up that you have to make a sharp left around. Well, he tried to get over, but I wouldn't let him. He smacks into the wall resulting in a deceleration from about 156 -0 in about a quarter of a second. He stays there the ENTIRE race trying to get out of his spot. He was stuck. I laughed. Just a cute story for you. (just a reminder, i was in my Z06 Vette when it happened, so remember that when you vote on my poll)

Does my post require additional clarification? People 'make fun' (tease, poke fun, taunt) others that use the auto setting. Often, the auto setting is associated with lack of skill in fine-tuning the individual gears. As you can see, it may be true sometimes, but in the general sense, this is malarky.

I think that this should be the other way round, setting the auto setting to the to the far right gives slow accelearion/high top speed and far left is high acceleration/low top speed

Speedfreak, it does. They must be referring to a different version. When you move the auto to the right, it widens it and makes top speed more.

The baby comment was rude, I am upset about the situation and I apologize. In that sense I did make fun.

As far as using the autoset goes, well, I was not trying to imply that using it alone is a sign of no skill, only that it would be unfair for those that do and those that either do not understand the graphs or ways to use them for setting gear ratios to make attempts, voice complaints about something they can ignore. I use autoset, I play with gears. It is not about skill, it is about respecting that others can use that which one does not understand. Mostly, it's my irratation at any that might have sent letters, e-mail to Polyphony, etc., about the gears, and perhaps other things, being too complicated.

btw, i realized my error in question you earlier, nico, but was not able to correct until recently.
