Severe internet connection issues

Hello,

Since Wednesday I am having severe issues with connecting to my cabled internet at my appartment. The wireless internet connection works perfect when I'm at uni though.

The problems arrived on Wednesday when Windows 7 started downloading update content without even ever asking me. The issue is that my computer detects my internet connection, but right as it connects, it disconnects from the connection again. Right now it's going endless loops of connecting and disconnecting and the intervals seem to be getting shorter and shorter each day. Yesterday I could actually browse some websites, now I have to spam the F5 button and pray it loads the page without that 1 second it's connected to the internet.

I also downloaded the new World of Warcraft patch, but that was after the problems started so I'm not counting it as one of the possible causes.

I called my friend and his connection is working fine. Since all of the connections are basically the same since it's one big block owned by the university, I'm expecting either I have been "left out" from the circuit or something's been bugging up since the new Windows 7 update.

Has anyone experienced something similar? There's no way I can google my problem since I have already used 15 minutes just trying to get into this subforum...
 
It could be a virus(do a full scan with anti-virus), check the cable(damaged cables can affect ability to connect), if not then contact the apartment manager for help.
 
Will try a scan. Cant see how the cable shouldnt work properly from one day to another though.

UPDATE

Definitely has to be something with my pc as I plugged the ethernet cable into my ps3 and currently posting and browsing from it. Nothing showing up on the scanner yet though.

Definitely sounds like virus issue or something like that. Do you have kind of bandwidth limits or anything like that? Also, the simple, easy, and usually the thing that fixes a lot....restart the computer.
 
Seems like it could of been the update(try rolling back before the update?) or if not a virus(check active processes in task manager to see something if anything is wrong).
 
I tried a system restore but there wasn't one available before the update. I'll look more into the virus possibility.

Been running Malware since November as well as yesterday, and nothing on the radar.

Running AVG antivirus scan right now as well as the Windows Updater. I'm wondering whether an update wasn't correctly installed and thus bugged up my adapter or something. If these two things do not fix the problem I will talk to the people at uni to see whether anyone else has been experiencing any problems. If this doesn't work, I'll have to phone ASUS to see what can be done.
 
Mind sharing how I do that?

I have found some .rar files on the Atheros website. My network card is an Atheros AR8131 (G. 6.20) or something like that. But I have no idea where the .sys files need to be placed.

Traced down the path of the ethernet driver, and scanned it with AVG. No infection. Rolled back my driver to an earlier version an no infection either. Scan has been going for at least 2 hours now and still nothing on the radar.

Damn, my precious ASUS has caught a serious cold :(

Internet now works, half. I have a connection, but each time I fire up Safari or try to open a website it still hops off the connection. It does, however, get back on and stay on it. But like I said, each time I click a link to a subforum or whatever, it hops off again. Driver has been rolled back as in nick09's post by the way.

You could try avast anti-virus, I always use it. Other than that I'd download the latest Ethernet driver from ASUS's website, remove current driver, and then install the latest driver.
 
Have you tried combofix? Also check your connection settings to make sure use proxy isn't ticked. Don't know where it Iain safari but in ie it's tools, Internet options, connection, LAN settings.
 
It's doing equally as crazy with any other browser. I have scanned my entire computer multiple times now so I highly doubt it's any kind of virus.
 
As you're moving drivers around, worth using DriverSweeper to get rid of unwanted bits and bobs, worth a clean out with CCleaner too.

As for it being a virus, best to try out loads of different ones, SuperAntiSpyware is good, but it is a resource hog, so install, run it, remove anything it finds and then remove SAS.
 
Maybe my cable went bad? Internet on the ps3 dissapeared as and the connection menu keeps showing the ethernet cable is disconnected.
 
Well a ethernet cable is not too costly anyways. It's also a good idea to try a second cable.
 
Well I've brought down the problem to either my cable or the internet connection. A new cable's been bought and the internet connection's being investigated as we speak. Thanks for all the help guys 👍
 
Looks like its my notebook after all. Internet connection works fine so the IT guy said its either windows overwrited my driver orhe has no idea whats going on. I did download the latest driver but to no avail. So i'm left with no clue and a complete reformat is the last I want to do. Getting really tired of Microsoft to be completely honest.
 
Before you install a new driver for it, remove the old ones using driver sweeper (which is free) and remove other stuff using CCleaner, which will clear a load of rubbish from your registry.

What Windows OS have you got?
 
Windows 7 64-bit. I took a look at Driver Sweeper, but it doesn't support the drivers I'm having issues with, which are Atheros drivers.

Might try a call to ASUS to see if there's been similar calls in lately. The IT guy said there were a number of people with ASUS machines since the Windows Update last Wednesday that had problems. But not as severe as mine were.
 
Well I have already done a fresh re-install of Windows 7 and everything works fine now. It's insane how fast this machine is. I almost forgot how fast it was straight out of the box. Installed my precious Safari browser right away and AVG Antivirus is installing as we speak 👍
 
Yeah, so in short something was up with windows update, right? Couldn't be helped with I guess.
 
Yes, it was Windows Update that more than likely played around with my drivers and installed one of its own.
 
The issue has returned. This time, however, i didnt run the Windows update. I only reinstalled Windows 7 yesterday evening. Issue started when running a virus scan. This is just sad.
