Red_Line-
Im not an expert on TV's but I'm looking to get an LCD soon, and was looking at two LCD's which I cant decide on.

there is the :

Sharp Aquos 26" Widescreen LCD HDTV** (LC26D43U)

and the

Toshiba 32" Widescreen LCD HDTV** (32HL86)

Aside from the obvious size difference... which one is better, and why.
I plan to use the the TV on my PS3 (with HDMI cables), and maybe double up up as a computer monitor, using a TVBOX.

Also....is it true that you need over a 32" TV to notce a difference in picture quality from standard to HD????:nervous:

Nope. Any screen that is "HD Ready" of any size you will notice a difference.

I'm not sure what display to suggest though out of the two. We personally have 2 Samsung displays (26" and 32" (This one.)) which are brilliant. But nowadays, LCD standards are so competitive, I don't think you can go wrong with whatever quality-brand LCD display you go for.

Edit: The Sharp seems to have a better contrast ratio - 1200:1, whereas the Toshiba has 800:1. The higher the ratio, the better (or stronger) the black/white levels will be.

Well, I have pretty much that exact Toshiba, and it's been excellent. I haven't actually stuck anything HD into it yet, but we picked it because it looked the best in the store. So, I can't tell you how it compares or what it looks like with a PS3 signal, but it's certainly a good TV on a day to day basis.

All very good advice.

In general, the best LCD flat panels I have seen have been coming from the "S" companies: Samsung, Sharp, and Sony.

Samsung is the undeniable industry leader right now in consumer grade LCD panel manufacturing, and in fact Sony uses Samsung panels in all of their high-end LCD TVs. That's where the similarities end though, as all three use diffeent backlights, video processors, etc. - all of which can effect the quality fo the image by a considerable amount.

In general though, it would be hard to go wrong with any of the equivelent models from Samsung, Sharp, and Sony... they all have helped set the industry bar for consumer LCD TVs.

Well, I would say that it all pretty much comes down to this:

Do you want a little bit larger screen, thus sacrificing some a little contrast ratio. Or, do you want the better contrast ratio, thus sacrificing some size in the t.v.

Ultimately, you cant go too wrong. If it were me though, I would opt for the Sharp because it has the better contrast ratio, and its a little bit cheaper as well.

ty for the advice everyone :)
I think I will probably get the sharp, just for the contrast ratio, and I read it can be doubled as a computer monitor

We just got a Sharp XD1E 37" - And you might want to investigate a little further.. I decided on the Sharp as the Samsungs (Which me and the EO previously agreed on) apparently has issues with DVI output from computers. And this was a major concern for me, as all our signals, be it TV, DVD, DivX, HD etc, comes from our HTPC...

Anyway - I can not describe how happy I am with our XD1E... DAMN..

Btw.. Here's the first one we got, delivered by GLS :-|

The guy who owns the shop personally brought another, working, one the day after.. His picture should be in the dictionary under "Service"..... :-)

So for me - Sharp all the way - ATM that is....

Finally - The XD1E has a 1920x1080 resolution which was also a deciding factor !...

I've also gotta recommend the Sharp. I have its 46" big brother and its wonderful.

When you said you wouldn't be able to notice the HD on a smaller screen, I know what you are thinking. As the TV gets bigger (and you have a set resolution, say 720p max) the pixels start becoming bigger. With a 20" screen that isn't bad, but as you jump up in size to say a 65" those pixels start becoming pretty big.

Thing is, you wouldn't be able to tell as much difference in 720p and 1080p on a 27" as you could with a 46", simply because the pixels are somewhat small to begin with on the 27".

I hope you get what I mean. :)

Toshiba sounds good, but I'd go with the Sharp one. I've seen this one up close and the image is pretty good. If I were you though, I'd go to a store and look at them in person, that way you can better judge which one is better for you. Depending on where you go, you can take a dvd and ask them if they can play it for you on the screen you want, being that you are REALLY considering buying it. I usually do this at my local best buy (which is NOT local, about a 30 minute drive), and they are more than happy to let me see a dvd on it.

If you do that, make sure you calibrate both TVs as well.
Yes. The staff in those stores never know how to setup a TV, so you end up doing it yourself anyway... You would think they would set it up properly to make more sales!

thats so true, and sorry I forgot to mention it. But yea, when I went, I took Finding Nemo (my little brother was with me) and saw that in some TV's you get some pixelation or distortion, I really don't know the word for it. But like G.T said, they don't really set-up the TV's that good so mess with the settings to see what you get, sometimes a TV that looks less good than another one will look better with a few adjustments.
