There is only one reason why they gave the car 950 horsepower.

So they could say that the car has 950 horsepower.

The track variant could probably benefit from all that power though...

Horsepower wars, the best possible war out there. When it happens, we all win.

Shelby just went beast mode.

Personally, I would have been more impressed if Shelby took the GT500, added the eco boost technology to the V8, while at the same time throw in an hybrid power train that can add to the gas power. Have the V8 churn out 750-800 horses and an extra 150-200 HP from the hybrid power. That way getting 1000 horses is not as much of a hassle on the engine, and Ford can get added street cred for the eco boost and hybrid tech.

All wishful thinking of course.

Please don't add the eco-boom to my Mustang. Thanks.

I understand on purists terms on how power should be attained, but vehicles like these are great opportunities to advance whatever you want to develop.

Remember people used to think the automobile will never replace the horse.

A 200 mph Mustang! Oh wait, didn't they already do that? I think so. I don't think 1000 horsepower going to only the rear wheels is a very efficient idea. Four digit power shoved aft is just going to translate into a massive cloud of smoke. It could work on an AWD car, but an FR car with that much power will likely have too much wheelspin.
Because you know, these things called drag radials & proper throttle control would definitely help solve that.

I don't think that even street legal drag radials can handle that amount of power without wheelspin.

Isn't the high power version a track-only model?

There are Supras here in Texas pushing 1,200whp & driven weekly. I have no doubt this 1,000hp GT500 can do the same.

Again, proper tires & a driver who can manage the throttle properly could drive one of these without wheel spin.

Uh huh.. But do those Supras have LRA?

It doesn't matter as you originally said that street legal radials may not be to handle that kind of power when in reality, they can, and secondly, there have been numerous GT500s in the range of this Shelby that have been street driven.

This one was just at the mile last year & is street driven w/ 1,200whp.

Hellion even shows a small bit of footage of this car on the street w/ 1,046whp.

As said, with a proper driver & proper tires, most of these modified 1,000whp+ cars can be driven on the street.

"Is 1000 horsepower too much? Sure. But you'll put that on the cover of the magazine, where 300 horsepower doesn't have that much chance anymore. It's a matter of marketing. We will sell a few of them. Probably won't make a profit, but we'll improve the image of the Mustang, and that will sell a lot of V-6 Mustangs."

Theres probably more than a bit of truth to that.

1000 is a magic number. Somehow this arbitrary measurement has managed to conjure an allure to the mouth-breathing masses. If they had called it the "Super Snake Mk2" or "GT540" I'd be a lot more receptive to it, but alas they marketed it with that stupid number...

I would have at least called it the GT 1000 not just 1000. Around here if you have a 6 cylinder in your muscle car you get laughed at.

Before the '11 Mustangs, yeah. Now-a-days, 300hp from the factory is enough to put most cars in the rear view mirror.

Yeah and then they don't know what hit them when you tell them you've got a 4.9L straight six in your car lol.

But it's not a "real" Mustang!

I still don't get it. How a car sells on 1,000 hp alone confuses me. I'm not a Mustang guy, so maybe the magic is lost on me, but I can't get excited over this, because from my point of view there are many ways to achieve the same result with more on the side.

However this car does show one thing very clearly. Road car are not "maxxed out". When an automaker gives you 600 hp, it's not because that's all they could do. It should be obvious quite frankly, but I've seen enough comments that make it seem otherwise.

What the problem? Use less than full throttle when you have less than full traction, and use full throttle when you have grip. Pedals let any car handle any amount of power. This car is only going to make smoke in two cases:

1. The driver does it on purpose

2. The driver can't drive

It's because people think your hot **** if you've got a load of power in a cool car.

Well that looks pretty pedestrian. I mean no one's gonna take a Shelby Mustang as a sleeper, but on a dark street in a dark night you wouldn't know that thing has a thousand horses underhood.

We got quite a few cars like that here in DFW. :sly:

Despite my feelings towards the car in general, I actually quite like the looks.

Little details like the front splitter having just the right amount of creases and angles make it look serious and strong.

If you put a six cylinder in a muscle car you should be laughed at...just sayin'. Of course, I grew up in the 60's/70's when you got laughed at if you had less than 400 cubes and now drive a V-12 so what do I know? By the way, that is one fine Mustang!

As I said. I won't drive a muscle car unless I put a V8 in it or it has one.

I wouldn't say you'd get laughed at if you had less that 400 cubes, 302s put out quite the power back then...
