Is this 93-octane gas really better than the other kinds of gas? Will it be beneficial to run a tank of this through your system in an older, worn car, like my 89 Oldsmobile with 164,000 miles?

93 octane gas is not "better" than lower octane gas, it will just resist detonation better. Detonation occurs when a portion of the air/fuel mixture explodes before the flame front from the spark hits it, and when the two flames meet, you get that telltale knocking and pinging. So really, it's not terribly beneficial, just a little bit more expensive.

High performance engines need a higher octane gasoline because there is more cylinder pressure in high performance cars, so they need the higher octane to prevent detonation.

Ive been using it in my 1995 Honda Prelude for several months now and I have noticed a +2 mpg difference. I'm a believer now 👍 I also asked the lady working at shell and she told me that people come in all the time saying that they have seen major differences too. At first i thought it was just another gas but now I see why it is usually more expensive. just my $.02

I meant Shell V-Power, not any old premium, 93-octane gasoline.

So, lets do some math.

If my car gets 16mpg normally, and I get 87-O for $2.15, that is
($2.15/gal)/(16mi/gal)=$0.1343/mi

If I get this 2mpg boost from 93-O for $2.37/gal that is
($2.37/gal)/(18mi/gal)=$0.1317/mi

So, if I do get that 2mpg boost with 93-O, that means I save 1 cent every 4 miles. Doesn't seem worth it to me...

I feel like Famine right now...

Wait a second...Your car is made to run on regular or 87 octane it will probably not get better mpg with the V-Power, but Honda reccomends at least 91 octane for the Prelude. so i dont think using your car for an example will work. also regular here is about $2.02 and V-Power is $2.22

That's why I said "if" I get the 2mpg boost. My brother tried doing the tests to see if he got a mpg boost, but he's too stupid to remember to check the mileage...

Only 93 Octane?

Our Premuim unleaded is 95 and BP Ultimate is 98 Octane that I use in my Skyline.

The main premise of Shell V-Power is that it has more cleansing power than other gases. Up to 4x more power to clean your fuel system and injectors.

This cleaner is why you may see an increase in fuel effiency as it cleans your dirty fuel system.

So to answer your question. Yes, it may be very benificial to run a few tanks of V-Power.
I almost always run V-Power in my car, but I haven't seen any noticeable improvements in fuel economy.

Finally, someone gets what I was getting at. Does it have the same effect as that fuel system cleaner that you pour into your tank?

Yes. However, the fuel system cleaner is much more powerful than the V-Power is. You should only use the fuel system cleaner say once or twice a year, or you may fry your injectors.

The Shell gas gives me terriable mileage for some reason. But thats due to it being just like fuel system treater. I would recommend buy your normal gas, don't get premuim if you don't need it, you are only wasting your money. If you need to go to AutoZone and buy a bottle of STP fuel system cleaner. It's like 5 bucks and does the same thing.

So I take it I shouldn't mix V-Power and fule system cleaner?

Yeah, my dad got me a bottle of that yesterday. 👍

I do it about every 5000 mile after I get my oil changed. You don't need to do it all that often.

Well, here is what I would do if I were you.
I'd go buy some fuel system cleaner and add it to whatever the regular kind of gas you usually buy. As the FSC is more powerful than the V-Power, it's gonna really do some good on your older car. Then I'd suggest that you use a tank of V-Power every once in a while to keep your system clean.

Remember, all the different types of gas out their have cleaners added to them. If I recall correctly, this has been mandated by the US government to help reduce emissions. It's just that the Shell V-Power has about 4x more cleaner added to it than what the US government mandates and what most other kinds of gas contain.

I had my injectors cleaned and flow tested for around $10/injector, might be worth the money if you've got a car with some miles on it.

They did before and after results, the before actually didn't look bad at all for a car with close to 140k miles on it. I use Chevron gas, I don't know if thats proof that techron is a good cleaner, but I'll continue using it.
