Should I Send It Back? UPDATE

Hi
I have had my PS3 since march 08 and It was wisper quiet for many months until the fan started getting noisy during movies and games. It seems strange to me that during some games it remain quiet but within 10 mins of bad company it is up to the noisy level that everyone talks about. Another strange thing is that a red glow comes from the Optical connector- is that a red light or the PS3 burning up? Another thing is that i have heard reports of refurbished PS3s being scrathed and even noiser, I don't want to trade in my un scrathed and perfectly performing PS3 for one like that.

Should I send it back or what.
Any help will be appreciated.

I've had the same experience with my older PS3 (80gb BC). After about half a year, the fan got louder. The main reason would be due to the dust accumulating in and around the fan. You can probably google on how to get rid of dust in your PS3. If you do it carefully, i don't think is as precarious as it sounds.

I also think that its the accumulation of dust which is causing it to kick into a higher fan speed. The easiest way to clean it is to get the smallest vacuum cleaner attachment you can find and run it round the rear and side vents. Also try running the PS3 vertical and see if that helps.

I wouldnt however recommend that so called 'dust cleaning' fan speed trick which you may have seen on You Tube. Thats actually not a feature, its just using the power button to confuse the system and can eventually damage your system.

Don't worry, thats normal. Its the laser light coming from the optical output to deliver digital audio if your using it. On the PS2 there was a setting in the menu to turn if off. On the PS3 there is no way of doing that so its just on all the time.

The quality of refurbs is somewhat patchy, yes sometimes you will recieve a unit which is scratched whilst other times you might get a brand new casing. Its really luck of the draw because the first console fixed is the first console shipped. If Sony deem the case to be in a 'resonable' condition then you might get a casing which has been used.

I would recommend you try cleaning out the system first, I personally wouldnt send it back to Sony unless you had a major problem like its not reading disks or booting up. Just see how it goes first.

i agree with all the above, and i had a problem with heat build up which turned the fans up producting a loader noise level, i changed from running horizontal to vertical, now days it stays on level 1 and even after several hours of use it still has not got to level two.
 
Just used canned air to blow the dust out every so often, I do it a couple times a month and none of my PS3's have been very loud.
 
I reguarly dust it and just recently did a throurough vaccum of it and it still gets to "level 3" fan. To test it out I tried it out vertically and still within 10 mins of Bad Company it was on level 3. After I finished playing BC and ejected the disc I let it sit in the XMB for 20 mins and the fan did not go quiet while normally it does. If any one has any help or answers I would really appreciate them thanks.:)


EDIT-Also If the fan being noisy is due to dust accumulating then why is it only during some games and not all the time?

Maybe some games make the processors/BR drive work harder than others?

Thats true, maybe Bad Company just makes the machine work harder. If its fine on other games then I wouldnt worry too much about it.
