Should New Members Be Able to Create New Threads

I was surfing GTP Today under the GT4 forums. I found a new member, who's name will not be mentioned, who made a few threads that were already talked about. It seems under further evaluation that members who have been around longer have not made useless threads, and use the search more frequently. My idea is this: If the vote passes, new members under 50 posts or not a member for at least 90 days (the avatar limit) should not be able to create new threads. This would cut down on flaming in threads (Eagle) and the excess duplicate threads. Newbies would be *forced* to post in old threads, utilizing the whole GTP Database, and making everybody's life easier. Then, in the future, they would know how to do this and would more than likely do it again, promoting good behavior.

Please vote, remember every vote counts. This poll will close in 5 days.

P.S.: Mods please tell me what you think.

====================================================

EDIT: 3:30 PM EST -- To make myself clear, anyone who is allowed to have an avatar will be allowed to make a new thread. As posted below, this is not a "punish newbies for dumbass thread" vote. This is more of a "You need time to get used to GTPlanet" vote. As researched, the longer one has been at GTPlanet, the less opt they are to create useless and pointless threads, thus relieving stress of other members who don't like to see the boards all motted up.

EDIT: 10:21 PM EST -- PLEASE READ WHOLE THREAD BEFORE VOTING!!!!!!

My thoughts are that it would only encourage spamming. To ask a simple question, it would cause people to spam their way to a point where they could ask the question.

A community can not continue without the infusion of new people.

So the next step we go to is having a new member wait until authorized by an admin or moderator. At that point, we don't have enough moderators with enough time to cover that. Moderators sole purpose would be to log on and authorize all the new members.

It's a good idea, but I'm not sure I'd agree.

I dissagree, it will mean that they ask the question in another thread. They have this system at supercars.net and it seems to work there.

Most of the times, when they ask a question, it's "Will ___ be in GT4?" and the topic is already covered. It would be spamming to create a new thread, IMO. Obviously nobody wants others to spam their way to 50 posts, but there is a "report" button for spamming, language, etc. It would cut down on useless threads. And if someone does find some good info, they could PM it to Eagle or John. They'd be more than willing to post more information. Or they could PM their question.

edit: I'll gladly become a mod for you guys. Just ask, I'll be devoted. :)

you have a valid point but do you think that in 90 days or in 50 posts they might find the answers they were looking for? IMHO someone has to be a total dumbass to waste time like that. It couldn`t hurt to try it.

Maybe if we could also limit new users to a certain amount of posts per day and as their post count grows their post limit will grow as well.

You're just full of wonderful ideas. It would get rid of spamming, alltogether. (hopefully) That's what happened with me. I didn't post much in the begginning, then as I got more comfortable, I began posting much more... 👍 again!!

I agree with alot of teh points made.
But another thing to add is that surely it will mean less of a load on the servers. Might nto be much, but it is something. Also, if people do start spamming, in order for there not be a good case against them to ban them they woudl have to move into different threads. Also maybe by then some of the cleverer ones would have picked up a broader knowledge.

I agree with it. I'm tired of seeing threads with thing that have already been discussed. Esspecially in the GT4 forum.

Like Der Alta said: I like the idea but I don't know if I'd agree with it. Personally, I don't like it cuz I'm pretty sure I don't have 50 posts and I'm not a "noob". I've been here for about 2 years now, granted I haven't been back here in a year or so, but hey :D What does this mean? Number one, I won't be able to post a topic because a buncha people ruined it for the rest of us. Number two, I'm gonna spam my way to 50 posts regardless of a post-per-day limit. Allow 5 posts a day? Well I'll do that...

To sum up, I think people will just spam away to get to 50 and it will keep people like me from posting intelligent topics (atleast I like to THINK that I have something relevant to post :) ). I'm sure the system will work to a certain degree but is it fair? I'm sure everyone over 50 posts is voting "no" right now...

Did you read the 90 days part? Basically if you're allowed to have an avatar, you're allowed to post a new thread.

Theres something I understand.

I don't think your putting this a punishing new members for spamming and making pointless thread, right? This is more like "get used to the board thing" right?

Exactly. People who are used to the board are less opt to make useless threads. If they do after that point, there is nothing we can do about it. I don't in any way want to punish anybody, just relieve the stress of those out there who don't like pointless threads (i.e. Eagle). Other points made above :)

TriplePlay: oops, my bad, I skimmed it and didn't pick it up. I think it would work now because there is no longer a post prerequisite that I was arguing about and like Darin just said, a "get used to it" time period. 👍

I dis-agree, then if they had something to make at thread of, they would spam until 50 posts and/or leave. 👎

Damn civic, you're killin me here!!! Now one less yes and one more no, it should be 9-3!! :banghead:

It's allright though, I'm sure Jordan will look at it and consider it.

Okay, you disagree. Look at the GT4 forum and tell me that you disagree now.

That's reasonable, GT4 is almost out, they have to discuss something. Think about it, your a member and you've got some really neat information and you want to post it.. You sign up at GTPlanet and only thing for the next 3 months that you can do is browse and post in other topics. None of the new members are aware of the GTPlanet system, they come here, they post, they stay or they leave. If you make them sit here and watch for 3 months(90 days) or make them post 50 times before making a thread, your going to scare half of GTPlanet's future members. After all this is a Gran Turismo website, they have to post Gran Turismo stuff here. It's reasonable, what's the point of sitting there and searching through 10,000+ threads to see if it's been posted before. 👎 I know I wouldn't search. I'd make a new thread.

Yes They Should Be Able To Create New Threads.
Because what if a new member has a completely legitiment thread topic? it would discourgadge them and they might go to some other forum instead of here. thus reducing the members here.

GT4? Almost out? My ass. We got a long time for that one.

I see more than 4 1/2 of useless pages in the GT4 forum that need to be deleted.

They could PM someone popular that they trust (such as a mod like Der Alta or Sage, maybe even Eagle or john) and they could post the new information. Also if it is just a stupid question, PMing is better than new-threading. They would get a straight answer, or in eagle's case, a huge list of threads pertaining of the situation. Maybe even cut down the # of posts to 25 and 45 days, just enough so there aren't many duplicate threads. It's not discouraging, just a short time period.

So far it seems like a split vote. Since you can't change votes, I'm gonna say that it's 11-8, since Civic decided the other way. 9:16 est

What's with all the Eagle bashing? Everywhere I go I hear I'm the reason new members need fear using GTP.

You all remember "Do un to others as you would have them do un to you."? That's me. If I posted the crap these people do, I'd get flamed, and I'd deserve it, and maybe I'd think about why I got flamed instead of just having a cry and I'd learn not to do it again. Positive reinforcement is all very well and good but only works on people with some degree of self-awareness. I do however make an effort to post links that will answer whatever question has been posted, unless it's outrageous like what carbon-fibre hooded cars will appear.

The vote is split 10-10 atm, or 11-9 as apparently someone backflipped. I'm thinking this would actually be pretty good, I didn't realise there was a 90 day minimum before you could change your avatar (I had been wondering why with 1500+ posts I still couldn't...), so using that as a basis would be wise. There is a danger people will spam it up somewhere, but if their stupid enough to do that, they deserve a ban. We can include in Sage's new thread a message to PM him or someone else of merit with whatever new information a member has found, and that person can then check the authenticity of it before making the call to start a new thread or simply expand on a pre-existing one. If a member really is keen about making a contribution to the forum then this is a pretty small step that ensures they don't unknowingly make an ass of themselves by posting something that's already been posted, meanwhile they can still contribute new topics as applicable. I'm here like 12 hours a day and I know a lot of other members randomly fill the void so it's not like we don't have a constant presence. Could we setup a group system so the PM would be forwarded to say, 5 people to increase the chance of it being dealt with quickly?

Some of the best members here are those with <50 posts but have been members since 2001 any only contribute quality information when they find it. This system isn't going to punish any legitimate GTP members, nor is it going to turn away people who wish to join our community - we have over 1.1 million posts, you can't tell me they can't find topics to keep them interested. If they're serious about joining GTP and read and understand (perhaps as part of the ToS or AUP) that this system is simply designed to protect everyone's enjoyment of the board, not expressly limit their ability to contribute, then they shouldn't have any qualms whatsoever. I mean come on, we're worth it ;)

I dont like this idea, punish *quiet* people (idk if i even have 50 posts)like me because you dont have enough self control to stop yourself from clicking a thread that has to do with a topic thats been beaten to death already?
lol i'm just kidding...but I think it makes much more sence if newbs could only post 1 new thread every 2 days, and post 5 times a day. Because not every noob is a moron that posts things that have been covered, This wont completely solve the problem..but i think it would help it alot. And c'mon.....what HAVENT you guys already discussed about gt4 lol

I've never even posted in the gt4 board, it would really piss me off if i was a new member (i kinda still am) and i couldnt post because the gt4 board is a bunch of reposts. The idea is good, but instead of completely banning thread making for noobs, we should severely limit it.

Eagle, you know I'm just playin when I say you're a flamer. You're just helping the new members in their stays ;) I think it's a good think that you search, we need that here. Not enough people search. That's why this idea IS a good idea. Thanks for backin me on this one!! :)

We're not punishing anyone here. Quiet members have the 90 day limit, and even still they can PM people.
and damn, this is a split vote :guilty: C'MON GUYS!!! :grumpy:

I'm a new member by the name of GTPLANETROCKS, I found some screenshots off IGN that nobody has seen, so I'm gonna go PM Der Alta and tell him look at this, post this in the forum for me, because I can't. If GTP was run by your idea, the moderators would have 2 PM's per "stupid" thread in the GT4 Forum. Great thinking! 👍

OR You could do what people SHOULD DO and POST IN A THREAD THAT HAS ALREADY BEEN MADE!!! WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THAT?!!!?!!!!

Sorry for the emotion, but it seems that you need a taste of this medicine too. Not to be punishing, but really. You gonna make a new thread with a grand total of 4 screens from IGN? I mean come on, IT's IGN!!!

Fight's even 14-14 @ midnight first day...
