I've spent a lot of time online racing in other games. I believe Public hosted rooms are much better than private rooms. I hope PD gives us Public rooms with options. Here is why.

Public Rooms - Has a host. Host can set aside any number of slots for friends. All friends basically equals a private room. Host can kick unruly drivers. Voice also plays a part in the room members keeping unruly drivers in check. Friends and public players can join and quit the room anytime as long as a public or friend slot is open. Host selects track, laps, which restrictions for things like car class, horsepower, weight, driving aids, pro/standard physics, damage level, ghosts/not etc.

Private Rooms - Same as public room, but only friends that are invited or who know the room name can enter.

After many many hours in racing games online, I believe people really want Public rooms with a lot of flexibility. If PD keeps hearing we want "Private Rooms" we might just get "Private Rooms". Those are difficult to coordinate and fill. Most friends live in different time zones and it's just a pain to coordinate. It's extremely rare you can get a big room filled. It "sounds" like a good idea, but in practice most people just can't be bothered to coordinate a group and just want to race with a friend or two/three etc and some decent like minded drivers.

Flexible Public Rooms gives you the best of both worlds. Just say NO to private rooms! Hope PD is listening! :)

PS - I think most people voting for private rooms aren't reading this post closely enough. Hope PD is paying more attention!

I think both. Alot of games utilize these "lobbies" perfectly fine. They have rooms for beginners, advanced, expert, and then private rooms you can create...

public rooms with the ability to put a password on it if you wanted friends only
list of rooms that you can sort by car type, latency, max drivers, game type etc

public rooms with the ability to put a password on it if you wanted friends only

Didn't you read the definition of public room? You could have a room of 16 with 15 friends slots. Thus only friends could join. It "is" a private room if the host makes all the slots friends slots.

The reason I made this poll is that PD doesn't have any online experience and many voicing their concerns don't either, so if they listen to the majority we won't get what we should. I read where one of the lead developers (forget his name) doesn't play other games, because he's bored in 5 minutes. Not good.

I have this fear, that PD will give us "Private Rooms" and keep the public rooms basic like they are now. That would be a disaster. Private rooms are sooo hard to fill with friends. I have 100 friends on Xbox Live. On any given night about 10 to 30 are online when I am.

It's so tough to get all your friends to play the same game at the same time. Maybe you can easily get 2 to 5, but after that it gets tough. Someone has to go eat dinner, then someone quits, because they need to study or to go to bed, because they are East Coast or they have to quit for their softball league, etc, etc.

90% of the time I"m online I just want to race with as many friends as possible and have them pop in and out of the lobby when they can. I want the remaining slots filled with decent drivers. I've played 400 hours of Forza 1 and Forza 2.

It's possible to have public rooms, that work fine. It just doesn't seem that way, because there isn't any voice chat to communicate, damage doesn't exist, the rolling starts and 3 laps races make it so tough to catch up from the back, the penalty system is messed up.

Trust me, if PD fixes the other issues public drivers will start to settle down. It's just for now online is broken and there is no way to communicate, so online is like "Lord of the Flies". It's mayhem. Private rooms won't magically solve anything. If public rooms aren't fixed/improved then you'll just spend way to much time coordinating rooms and get frustrated, because they are too small and everyone wants to quit too soon for misc, reasons...

Jack you are a dirty little trickster with your trick questions. But you are also totally right.

I voted public rooms.

After a while this topic should be posted at the sony GT forums.

I initially voted private but public might be better if there's a kick option or players get scored based on whether they block, ram people off the road, etc.

Public rooms would be much better. I would like to be able to set up a race with a certain track and other options so everyone would be on an equal playing field. The idea to rate drivers based on their performance would be a good idea if there weren't people that would rate someone down becuase they got passed or something.

I dunno what you're hoping for Jack but I want 'public rooms' with the option for a password to make it 'private', just like loads of other onlinr ganes
just being able to choose what room you enter would almost solve the problem
i.e you wouldn't enter a room called 'destruction derby' :p

edit - sorry didn't read properly, never seen a game with 'friend slots' but would be good I suppose... would be bit of a hassle if you didn't have a big list of online players though (I have none)
I remember playing toca race driver on the pc ages ago and there were rooms there named 'clean racing only' etc, seemed to work pretty well

Thanks. Yep, I just don't think most people understand the options public rooms can offer. Private rooms are very limited, because... well.... they are private.

What do you mean with "friends slots"? I want to know what it means before I vote. Bear with me because my native language isn't Enlgish!

:)

Public rooms with the host having yes/no options on everything, therefore no need at all for private rooms.

A simpler way would be "friend places". Basically, of the 16 grid positions all the places/slots can be set for friends only.

I that case, I vote for the public room with friends slots.

I hope PD gives us Public rooms

I second that! 👍 Im afraid many people didn't get your point, too.
Whenever there are some crash kids, turn the collision off = problem solved :)

Agreed, that is the best way. Pre-allocating places for friends, but add in the ability to close the room. If you have eg good racing with 8 people sometimes you just do not want anyone else coming in and maybe spoiling the fun.

Also I hope PD will make the online races WORLDWIDE regardless what version of GT5P you have... Im much more concerned about that.
:nervous:

Agreed. PD also need to understand most of us have friends list that includes players from around whom we have already raced in eg Ridge Racer, Burnout Paradise etc.

Keeping the game region-locked will be a big downer.

Yeah Public rooms with passwords and voice chat.

So long I doesn't too much like Toca3.
Spent more time listening to peoples jokes and the " hang on I'm just having a smoke "
"Gimme 5 just put the kettle on"

yeah then we can make a GTPlanet room and all the clean racers can race together without the worry of getting their car scratched :D

Both will be great. Lets say I want to create Private rooms, but I Don't have a great Internet speed, so I would simply use PD servers rooms.
Private rooms will be great too, I think PD did say that in near future you will be able to make them, so I can't wait for GT-Planet to create few Servers and have professionals, and beginner players playing in them, all clean fun and true race die hards. Not demolition derby ;) hehe

Yeah, I'd prefer both, but make the "public" bit more like the open races we have right now. My reasoning for this is because then we lose a few more idiots because they can still race in most races without giving the private rooms any trouble. In other words, give the bashers, etc somewhere to play while the nicer racers can be left in peace.

you don't need to name the friends or setup a password. With friends slots you simply select how many friends you want to save "slots" for....

Example: Set up a room for 12 players and 5 friends slots. Only you and 6 public drivers can join with up to 5 friends as they come and go. You can also increase or decrease the amount of friends slots at some point if needed.

See my example above.

That works too. See my example above.

You should add "Both" as an option in the poll.....

I specifically left, that option out, because I wanted people to read the differences and "think" about it before making a choice. I'm guessing some people still didn't read that public rooms can be made "private" by selecting all friends, but what the heck, I tried. :)

Hopefully, PD will give us tons of options, if not in a patch to Prologue at least in GT 5.
