Should we profile bad drivers?

I thought it might be a good idea to complile a list of the bad drivers you might see online. Here's my contribution, to get it started:

The Early Braker (that's me :banghead:)

Whether he needs more practise, is naturally timid, or is just a bad driver, this guy brakes a mile early for every turn. Don't expect sympathy when you try to draft him and get brake checked - the race admins will assume he had bad brakes, an abnormally slippery car, or unusual cornering lines that require early braking. Result - you get penalty!

This same driver typically inserts many "confidence lifts" into the faster areas of the track, thus increasing his lap times even more and holding up anyone unfortunate enough to be stuck behind him.

No Mirrors

If you get rearended and didn't know it was going to happen, you're probably some form of this guy.

This driver, whether good or bad otherwise, has no clue what's going on behind him. Other drivers are afraid to go around him and he's constantly being surprised as they finally manage to do it. As most OLR league rules automatically penalize the overtaking driver for any contact that occurs during a passing maneuver, this driver is highly dangerous.

Note that many cars' interior views don't let you see the mirrors very well.

Barge Passer

This driver tries to go through gaps that aren't really there. He believes he can outbrake any driver on the track - and in the process ruin everyone's chance of catching the leaders. Thus, he will delay his braking beyond any reasonable point, then rush up the inside and try to pick up three or four positions. Usually, he has two wheels on the grass and is sideswiping everyone as he passes.

The good news is, the league rules will target him and not you. The bad news is, he can still cause a lot of problems, especially if damage is set to "heavy".

More good news: if the race admins approve it, there are various (no-contact!) tricks you can use to get rid of him more quickly and protect those ahead from his rampage. However, compassion dictates you shouldn't try to catch him out until you're really sure what he's thinking - he may be a new driver who has to use other people's braking points as reference for his own.

The mysteriously fast driver

This is probably someone using the power limiter to sneak a race car with epic downforce and handling into a low-power race. Some people are just very, very skillful, but others cleverly exploit flaws in game dynamics & balancing to get ahead. One example I've read about is using the power limiter to depower a Formula GT and get it into a 500hp lobby. (Someone has to have done that by now). Sure, it only has 500 horsepower, but it also has phenomenal downforce and aero efficency, plus all the advantages that come with light weight.

Really, there's not much you can do to stop this person. There are ways, but I'm not getting into them here.

What do you mean, "how are my brakes?" That's why cars have bumpers.

This driver has figured out that you can gain considerable advantage by punting people off the road, using them as his brakes in the process. Damage and penalties usually stop this guy.

A push in the wrong direction

Ever had to deal with someone who leans on you in turns? It could be an attempt to force you off the track, or he could be using you as a wall. It could be both. Either way, it's annoying.

Road hog

This is the guy who shows up in free run lobbies and expects everyone to let him through. His car usually has several times more power than the one he's trying to pass, thus, he could easily go around. Instead, he decides to use his non-existent right of way by bumping, honking, and eventually forcing the slower car off the road. He usually loses several seconds doing this.

The menace

Once in a while, there's a guy you have to be flat out afraid of. He's usually in a competitive car, but doesn't have the skills to drive it. He'll be slow and inattentive to traffic in the corners, but fast on the straights. When he does go off-track, which will happen a lot, he comes rushing back on with total disregard for traffic. All this adds up to a lot of crashes - by other people.

This one will be holding up faster drivers in the tighter part of the track - if they don't get by him before entering the main straight, they're stuck for another slow lap. Thus, they'll be taking a bit more risk than they usually would. Suddenly, Bad Driver does something unexpected! Guess what happens. Guess who gets penalized.

I hope this is helpful and correct. Did I miss any?

You forgot:

NFS Fanboy.

Will try to drift every corner in a Front Wheel Drive car and doughnut on fast straights when everyone else is racing

How about the Tries too hard to be clean and ends up causing more trouble

That's me at times. Overly cautious, braking early when there's a big group in front especially lap 1 turn 1, checking up when I could probably make a pass with an acceptable amount of contact.

And then there's The Lagger

He may have no idea he's even doing it, but you can watch him jump all over the track. One second he's 50 feet behind you, the next he's at your door. Or you're on your line getting ready to set up for a corner and suddenly he's in your way and on the brakes.

The no-brakers are the ones who really get on my nerves. Sometimes they just ghost right through you straight on off the track and break your concentration. And there's those wonderful times when they slam into you with penalties on and you end up getting a penalty. Then you've just got those people who are garbage drivers no matter what and there's nothing you can do.

Briatore The guy who does everything to win (mostly on others expence)
Raikkonen The guy who doesn't give a **** but is gentleman
Kubica Fears no curve but the curves fear him
Hamilton Freezes on last lap when going for gold

The griefer
Crash on lap 1 of a 20 lap race? No chance of him getting back up there, so he'll just try to ruin the race for everybody else by driving backwards.

Eric Cartman
Treats NASCAR as more like a destruction derby. Of course, it usually comes back to bite him in the ass anyway.

Great thread, you pretty much described me, I'm all of the above.

*edit* big up the hampshire posse lulz

Blind Coroner-How about the person who attempts to corner at the same speed and follow the same line no matter what drivetrain they're using? My favorite are those trying to power out in an mid-ship or FR car just because the 4WD monster in front of them has. Please know how each type of DT reacts in the corners. No matter how soft the tires, I'm tired of seeing a cloud of smoke come from every overmatched NSX or RX-7 on course.

___! Host-Some times I'm pissed before even entering the race because the host has changed the allowable # for HP and weight. He's gives himself just enough time to finish the flying lap while folks are choosing a new car from their garage. By the time you enter the free run, the race is about to begin in 39 seconds and the host assures himself of pole position.

The Ear-sore: The person who joins a room during a race with their music blaring into everyones headset.

The A-spec The person who uses players already in a turn as a mobile guardrail to bounce off and continue on.

The Constant GardenerWhile running the green hell, this person will constantly dip into the grass causing a chain of events leading to a bunch of smoke/dust/grass clouding your entry into any given corner. Result, gritting of teeth and car damage.

Mr. Sorry Mr. Sorry will bash into you and apologize. Rinse and repeat.

The Brain Knows everything about anything and goes on about it for the duration of their stay. Example: While in a drift room I hear someone going on about their twin turbo honda civic....yadda yadda yadda

The where'd you get that? Pretty self explanitory. You: driving around; Them: Dude, where'd you get that car? If it's not in the OCD, or the regular dealership where on earth would it be? You got it, Kaz himself created it, sent it to me, then deleted me from his friends list.

Don't think I saw this one:

Backwards Guy - Guy who after he decides he's grossly underpowered and can't win, or been "wronged" somehow during the race, decides to ruin everyone else's race by running backwards. Especially effective on Super Speedways. Fixed with appropriate room settings.

Met a few of these on various other smaller forums, usually they're nice guys who try to drive cleanly but are just so incompetent at racing that they're forever making mistakes & causing incidents.

A better name for that would be Troll.

A good list, but in my opinion the "Early Breaker" is not "bad." It is ALWAYS the responsibility of the trailing driver to give enough space to avoid rear-ending the leader. NO EXCEPTIONS. The trailing driver should either move over to take advantage of his lack of confidence/familiarity/skill/etc.

The "No Mirrors" guy is a pain, but to be fair it can be tough, unless you have a 3-monitor setup, to be fully aware of everyone. Most likely this guy will cut down hard in a corner when you are nose-to-nose and blame you for the mishap. Mics and constant communication are very important for online to get past this.

Or an even better name would be Exicisor the actual guy this is aimed at!

John Deere: A guy who cuts corners so he can take a few positions.

How about the "constant complainer" :) hey wait I think all of you would probably fall into that category. It's a game grow up what do guys think this is real . That's too funny :) I'm sure you guys would all fit into the "I can hit you but you can't hit back" category too . Some people take this stuff way too serious

Tailwagger: Guy who's back end wags like a dog's when we he goes into a corner.
Wallmandinger: Reference to AJ Almandinger who used to hit the walls quite often in his early Nascar career.

The unassuming lag cowboy:
This guy swears he has the best connection in the world. He constantly lag crashes violently swinging and teleporting side to side. And no matter how many times this happens to him he just attributes it to "S***y drivers EVERYWHERE IN GT" when it's his s***y connection causing it.
Common sayings of the lag cowboy:
"Yo bro drive straight stupid you're so bad!"
"Man, why'd everyone crash behind me on the first turn, lol"
"How come everyone disappeared?"
"PSN message from LAGGINGCOWBOY:
#*&@#$( #&$*@#($ &#$* #*#@ DAMN @#@#( ! GT !@* 5 YEARS OLD @$(%* CANADA AHHH"

Hey easy on the Canadians:nervous:

Mr. Jan Brady: The envious DS3 user:
Whenever this guy looses a race he swears it's because everyone and their mother is using a wheel online and it's impossible to be fast without one.
Common saying of the Jan Brady:
"Ok ok ok ok ok ok it's ok I know I lost the race... I'm not complaining anymore. But really? Who's using a wheel?"
"Man, too bad I just ate some greasy pizza and my s***y DS3 has the left stick broken off. I pro'lly coulda won."

Michael Trollmacher:
This guy never... EVER admits fair defeat. He'll go on and on about how he was tired, didn't have good working equipment, had a bad car, blah blah blah blah blah. Really, guy, if you mess up simple things like that or have some non-functional controller why are you even racing online?
Comming sayings of the Trollmacher:
"Yeah n1... OOPS I HAD COMFORT HARDS ON HAHAHA"
"Nah man, I accidently used the standard version of this car, my premium has a tune, so much faster but gr"
"What? Oh I wasn't racing, just trying out this car"

The telemarketer:
This guy just constantly uses his mic. He sees GT5 online more like a party chat line than a racing room. Eternally distracted from his driving and everyone suffers from it as a result since he refuses to put full focus on the road.
Common ramblings of the Telemarketer:
"(family member opens door and asks if they're coming down for dinner) CLOSE THE DOOR!"
"Hey guys did you hear that Justin Bieber got shot on CSI. Oh man and then I also heard that the new GT5 update's gonna have cool stuff, when are we gonna get free DLC (Crashes into everyone) OMG I HATE THIS TRACK. Where ya'll from? Do my wheels look cool? WHEN'S THE RACE GONNA START. Alright bro back off I'm trying to race the other dude"

The Sneaky One:
Joins a Street Cars only server and when the race starts, in the last 10 seconds or so he jumps into a race car and trys to join in, taking advantage of the host already being on the track unable to kick him. Ultimatly being an unfair opponent to other drivers.

If you ever make a Street Cars only server, these guys usually grab a Super GT car from the Recommended Garage. (Castrol Supra or Impul Calsonic GTR) Always depends on your HP limit, for I always set it around in the 500s.

Briatore The guy who does everything to win (mostly on others expence)
Raikkonen The guy who doesn't give a **** but is gentleman
Kubica Fears no curve but the curves fear him
Hamilton Freezes on last lap when going for gold

LOL I'm the Hamilton. Two big races and I almost threw them both away and happened 3 times last night.

This post was meant to be humorous...however I can see how humor, with you, could be falling on dead ears

LOL, just yesterday a driver kept bashing into me over and over. I held my line for a while but eventually got sick of it and punted him into the grass. The moment the race ended, I got booted off the server like I am the bad guy. If you are unable to maintain reasonable control your car -- whether you need practice or the car is difficult to drive -- it is *your problem.* Please don't make it everyone else's problem too. We all lose control once in a while and I'm going to get pushed around here and there, that's just racing. I'm talking about the guy who's all over the track, just about all the time.

I am the early braker who rarely checks his mirrors. Slow in fast out is the fastest so this is how I drive. And where lap times are concerned, braking early is the lesser evil than braking too late. It really is up to every driver to not rear-end others. If I kept watching out for people behind me, I'd ram someone ahead which I refuse to do under most circumstances (see paragraph above). People who draft right before a turn cause problems. Draft down the straight, then either move aside or back off before the turn.

Also I tend to take the same driving line in a race that I do in qualifying, which probably impacts other drivers. I can drive fast alone, and I can drive OK in a crowd, but I need to learn how to drive fast in a crowd.

EDIT: Maybe I did lose my temper getting frustrated with that driver who kept hitting me - punting him did not make me feel good. Now my main goal with online racing is clean and respectful driving, no matter what anyone else does. As in life, it's important to not let other's bad behavior influence my behavior. It's just not fair to hold others up to my own standards. Besides, I can always leave the room. :)

I forgot that the Road hog type, when found in actual races, gets extremely angry when someone has the audacity to re-enter the course within twenty bus-lengths of him. It doesn't matter if he was too far away to see you, if you get back on the track in front of him, he'll signal his displeasure by bumping, honking, and flashing his lights. I suspect this behavior has very little to do with any perceived hazard from the other car - my guess is that he wants to profit by the spun driver's misfortune and gets mad when said spun driver doesn't let him.

Also, Turbo Boost:

Turbo Boost flies into each and every corner with full throttle. No exceptions. Experienced drivers know the corners are all slower than he thinks they are, and may try to tell him so, but he actively ignores all advice and is incapable of learning from his mistakes. I suspect this type of driver often comes from arcade racers, particularly the older ones with extremely inaccurate physics, and often wonders why GT doesn't have widebody kits and nawzz.

This is something I had to deal with online a few days ago...

Troll Team - A big group of users who have a primary goal of helping out the leader of the group using a headset. This can be done by the leader telling the team who to take out and who to block the road for, this completely disrupts the race and usually results in the so called leader winning. They usually switch leader when the next race is about to happen.

This isn't too common, but I've had it happen a few times.

For an explanation of the Early Braker, here are some images I assembled with that handy-dandy accident sketcher and then edited:

I have developed a circle of clean drivers(friends). They enjoy racing in my lounge, because they know the racing will be clean and fun. Occasionally, I open a room in the lobby, to see if I can nab a couple more clean drivers. This is the only time I am exposed to the drivers listed above. Ppl in my lounge know that if they drive dirty they will have a 1 day suspension, and after that, a longer suspension, or removed from the room permanently. However, this has never been an issue. This is another reason ppl like my lounge. They know crap will not be tolerated. Also, we get to know one another, and gentlemanly racing comes naturally. We all make mistakes once in a while, and if one of us brakes too late going into a corner, we give the place back, and make the pass again. Also, if a car gets the inside line, the person on the outside might battle back, but always leaves room for both to race. It might be a bit limiting (# of participants), but the racing is always fun.....always!
