I thought it might be a good idea to complile a list of the bad drivers you might see online. Here's my contribution, to get it started:
The Early Braker (that's me
)
Whether he needs more practise, is naturally timid, or is just a bad driver, this guy brakes a mile early for every turn. Don't expect sympathy when you try to draft him and get brake checked - the race admins will assume he had bad brakes, an abnormally slippery car, or unusual cornering lines that require early braking. Result - you get penalty!
This same driver typically inserts many "confidence lifts" into the faster areas of the track, thus increasing his lap times even more and holding up anyone unfortunate enough to be stuck behind him.
No Mirrors
If you get rearended and didn't know it was going to happen, you're probably some form of this guy.
This driver, whether good or bad otherwise, has no clue what's going on behind him. Other drivers are afraid to go around him and he's constantly being surprised as they finally manage to do it. As most OLR league rules automatically penalize the overtaking driver for any contact that occurs during a passing maneuver, this driver is highly dangerous.
Note that many cars' interior views don't let you see the mirrors very well.
Barge Passer
This driver tries to go through gaps that aren't really there. He believes he can outbrake any driver on the track - and in the process ruin everyone's chance of catching the leaders. Thus, he will delay his braking beyond any reasonable point, then rush up the inside and try to pick up three or four positions. Usually, he has two wheels on the grass and is sideswiping everyone as he passes.
The good news is, the league rules will target him and not you. The bad news is, he can still cause a lot of problems, especially if damage is set to "heavy".
More good news: if the race admins approve it, there are various (no-contact!) tricks you can use to get rid of him more quickly and protect those ahead from his rampage. However, compassion dictates you shouldn't try to catch him out until you're really sure what he's thinking - he may be a new driver who has to use other people's braking points as reference for his own.
The mysteriously fast driver
This is probably someone using the power limiter to sneak a race car with epic downforce and handling into a low-power race. Some people are just very, very skillful, but others cleverly exploit flaws in game dynamics & balancing to get ahead. One example I've read about is using the power limiter to depower a Formula GT and get it into a 500hp lobby. (Someone has to have done that by now). Sure, it only has 500 horsepower, but it also has phenomenal downforce and aero efficency, plus all the advantages that come with light weight.
Really, there's not much you can do to stop this person. There are ways, but I'm not getting into them here.
What do you mean, "how are my brakes?" That's why cars have bumpers.
This driver has figured out that you can gain considerable advantage by punting people off the road, using them as his brakes in the process. Damage and penalties usually stop this guy.
A push in the wrong direction
Ever had to deal with someone who leans on you in turns? It could be an attempt to force you off the track, or he could be using you as a wall. It could be both. Either way, it's annoying.
Road hog
This is the guy who shows up in free run lobbies and expects everyone to let him through. His car usually has several times more power than the one he's trying to pass, thus, he could easily go around. Instead, he decides to use his non-existent right of way by bumping, honking, and eventually forcing the slower car off the road. He usually loses several seconds doing this.
The menace
Once in a while, there's a guy you have to be flat out afraid of. He's usually in a competitive car, but doesn't have the skills to drive it. He'll be slow and inattentive to traffic in the corners, but fast on the straights. When he does go off-track, which will happen a lot, he comes rushing back on with total disregard for traffic. All this adds up to a lot of crashes - by other people.
This one will be holding up faster drivers in the tighter part of the track - if they don't get by him before entering the main straight, they're stuck for another slow lap. Thus, they'll be taking a bit more risk than they usually would. Suddenly, Bad Driver does something unexpected! Guess what happens. Guess who gets penalized.
I hope this is helpful and correct. Did I miss any?
