shout boxs (realtime chat)

Hi, are there any plans to introduce realtime chat shout boxes into GTP? These are becoming increasingly popular on many other forums I frequent and it would be cool if we could have them at the top of specific sub-forums in GTP, ie the GT4 Photomode Competitions or the GT4 Drifting forum, and other places where sub-communities exist.

is it possible or even practical?

We had a shoutbox it was abused. I'm working on a new live chat system (GTP Live), which hopefully will fare much better. :)

I understand the potential for abuse, though I'd like to think that would be less of a problem in individual forums, where it would be a useful tool for likeminded users to communicate on trivial matters, rather than resorting to pm or unnecessary posts.

anyway good to know there's something in the works, cheers :)
 
I think the conversation forum would have been abused less if there was no way to track how many posts each member has made in the thread (without manually counting of course). Yes hopefully this new live GTP chat will fare much better :).

I would have thought that a shoutbox would be gridlocked from all the members here. The one on my site gets crowded with about 4 people on at once. GTP has like, 20 times that online.

With some luck there will be the facility to create individual 'rooms', so many conversations can go on at one time...?? Since MSN conversations with more than two people are impossible to keep up with (hence why I rarely take part in them), it would make sense to be able to create different rooms...
 
What measures are being made to avoid a repeat of what's happened before? I might be well off the boat here since I'm not entirely sure about what your creating, but is there any concern for it taking topical points and questions away from the forums as well? I mean if somone can just create a room and then people will just log into that and discuss say a new TVR in there, won't that damage any forums related to the same or similar topic since all the info may now simply be gone over in the chat?

No.

You will be able to send private chat messages, but you will not have the ability to create new "rooms". Only one room will be provided for off-topic chit chat.

The problem before was abuse of the system. This time, abuse won't mean the closing of a clunky chat room...it will mean a strike or banishment. All chat activity will be logged. Like I said above, only one "room" will be provided for off-topic discussion. I'm not too worried about it taking away from the forums.
