Curious to know how many members decided to take the drop. I did it yesterday and haven't looked back. Sure it's not as bling bling as the games native resolution, but WOW what a difference in performance.

I dropped to 720p, set the game image setting to sharpen, made some minor adjustments to my TV's settings and BAM! Much better overall performance.

720p really isn't bad at all. The graphics still look great, and keep in mind there have been other racing games on the PS3 that are native 720p and look quite good.

Hopefully Kaz will get the message!

What is better?

What is better?

Better frame-rates and major reduction in image slicing. You'll notice some slight image slicing, but nothing like it is running GT6 in its native resolution.

Some people are all about graphics, and some are not. GT6 in 720p doesn't look bad at all. Still a nice amount of surface reflections (and interior reflections too).

I haven't noticed any reason not to run it in 1080P. But, I did purchase a new PS3 with the game and the new system might be better able to keep up than an older PS3 would.

I have played other games where it was not smooth at all. On a computer I would cut some of the graphics that the game allowed. If that wasn't enough I would change the resolution on my monitor until I had a good 30 fps or faster frame rate.

So far with GT6 I'll keep it at 1080P.

Op: How big is your TV ? I find that playing on a smaller screen 720p is ok but when you hit 55 inches 720p starts to look a bit bad. Depending on the game of course. I did try it a for a bit but since I use a wheel and sit really close to a 55 inch it just introduces too much shimmering. Forza on the other hand is very acceptable in 720p even at 3 feet from the screen.

Yeah your screen size will certainly play a role in it. I use a 42" LG. what I also did was go into the game options and slightly reduced the screen border setting. It makes the overall image smaller, and unless my eyes are playing games that reduction actually helps as well.

I don't reduce my image to that of say a 27", but enough to where the image is still more than acceptable in regards to the size (for my use that is).

I doubt the game runs in 1080p anyway. WAY too much aliasing in the background for it to be 1080p. Screen size doesn't matter when it comes to which resolution to use. I use a 24" monitor and can easily tell the difference between higher and lower resolutions. All TV's upscale to 1080p anyway. The true screen size of 1080p is actually about the same as a 23" monitor. 4k-8k is more accurate for larger screens. Even that is probably upscaled quite a bit on larger televisions.

It runs at 1440x1080. The issue with the shimmering is in the way they used their art assets. They could have designed thicker fence posts at Imola for example and used a different approach to the fence textures which would reduce shimmering and aliasing buy quite a bit. Their art design is at fault here. Look at Forza in 720p and you see they designed a lot of the smaller details in such a way that helps hide shimmering. This could be done to Gt but it is very doubtful. They tried to make things a little too perfect without regard to the end result visually.

I did, but that is so I can record better gameplay to my PC. The game looks smoother to me a good trade-off like digital foundry mentioned in the news section.

I did after a month of playing GT6. My overall performance increased due to more frame rate. At 1080p driving on Mt Panorama just isnt bearable for me...

I switched to 720p on day 1 after seeing the stuttering slide-show of my first race start. Its a shame but I have hope that it will get attention at some point; I'm sure its in a 'to-do' list somewhere. GT5 had some stuttering issues at first too, as well as shadow problems. A slightly annoying side-effect of PD stickcing to their release date. :sly: We need to keep having faith I think... ;)

Just tested this in 720p and 1080p. Bathurst race at night and in day with a standard car and then with a premium about 5 feet from a 42 inch Sony Bravia. PS3 is a Slim 360gb hdd with about 20gb free.

Experience was noticeably better in 1080p. Even the standard car (Spoon Fit race car) looked much better. No slow down in frame rate between the modes. Seemed very consistant in both.

Edit: further test with image quality set to flicker reduction in GT6 display options affected frame rate negatively with a noticeable judder. All other tests done with setting at standard.

Did, still deciding if it's going to make enough difference. The reasons for - frame rate and rendering - ought to make perfect sense. (I think the only way to get there was a global nik off the 1080 settings on the PS3) I'm not sure I will lose anything with / on the other uses for the box. I am using a 2007 50" LCD Bravia and sitting about 5 ft out.

My TV will only display 720p, or accept a 1080i signal. 1080i has loads of stuttering, 720p looked slooth as silk until the 1.04 update, now there is some slow down, frame rate problems & slight tearing. Going to Normal View (aka bumper cam) solves most issues. Trouble is, I really like driving with Drivers Eye view (cockpit cam).

Slim 160 GB PS3.

I tried it, but it's just too jagged on my TV. It hurts my view more than the frame rate hit.

I went back...after a while I ceased to notice the pixel difference

I've never had any frame rate issues, so I'm still running at 1080p. I do get an occasional screen tear, but it's not often enough to bug me (sometimes the tear just looks like a streak of rain, oh well). Having a 47" screen, I'm afraid anything in 720p would look like pretty turdish anyway.

P.S. I've always played in the "standard" view, so not having to render the cockpits probably gives me more fps.

I was thinking about trying this.
I'm on a 92" screen but my projector only outputs 720p. It accepts a 1080p signal and downgrades it.

On gt5 I could see the difference between the 1080 and 720. I think I'm going to try gt6 and see what it does for me.

I thought sharpen decreased performance? Or is that what turns off AA?

Flicker reduction reduced the shimmering but reduced framerate for me. It's applying processing to smooth the picture and stop flickering around high contrast/straight lines areas that certainly slowed mine down. I was using cockpit mode.

I didn't try the sharpen effect but it may well be that it also slows down frame rate compared to "standard" as it is also applying sharpening processing to the image or as you said just turns off anti aliasing and increasing frame rate. I will try it once my son's watched a bit of telly.

using 1080p as my slim handles gt6 quite well, flickerreduction(v-sync) is off as tearing didn´t happen that much and when i can oversee it(1 immersion breaking tearing on 3-5 races ~)
i use sharpen(anisotropic filtering) as i prefer sharp filtered textures and the performance impact(on the slim) is nothing. atoc still hits immersion the most.

720p is just way to blurry thanks to the damn mlaa and atoc combination

gt5 was 720p for me because 4xmsaa(no atoc^^)+anisotropic filtering just looked way better that 1080p quincux aa +atoc

I just noticed I have been running in 1080i for god knows how long. Switched over to 1080p, didn't notice a significant increase in tearing. I'm going to try 720p to see if I can see what everyone else sees.

I hope people realise that frame rate is also track dependent. 16 cars on a weather free track runs way better than 12 cars on a weather track with lots of shadows, etc.

I play on a pc monitor with native 1080p resolution.
As most of you may know, monitors doesn't downscale resolution as well as televisions do, so I'm keeping mine at 1080p.
I've had no problems with performance; ps3 slim with a Seagate 500gb hdd.

Sharpen removes a form of AA and is the best performing of the three settings. Flicker reduction is the worst. If you are going to try 720p make sure to try the different settings as well. Sharpen mode in 720p will make your eyes bleed. You can shave on the jaggies you see on a 55 inch screen.
